Toyota Accelerator Recall Repairs by the Numbers

Detroit, MIAs the lawsuits continue to pile up and the Toyota continues to deny that rapid acceleration has anything to do with electronic throttle systems, the automaker has been quietly repairing the millions of vehicles recalled for sticking accelerator pedals, ill-fitting floor mats and software updates for specific models. Today's issue of just-auto global news reports that Toyota has serviced just over three million vehicles for various recall deficiencies in the US.

According to the manufacturer, the numbers break down as follows:

A total of 1.6 million vehicles have been remediated to address the potential for sticking accelerator pedals. About 1.5 million have been brought in to deal with ill-fitting floor mats and the potential for accelerator pedal entrapment. There have also been 115,000 updates to the software with regard to the anti-lock brake systems (ABS) in certain 2010 Prius and Lexus models.

The automaker noted that more than 732,000 vehicles have received both the floor mat and modifications to the sticking accelerator pedal.

The servicing is being carried out at dealers across the country and is likely putting a strain on service departments that must continue routine maintenance and warranty work on vehicles not covered by the recalls. When measured over time, more than 120,000 remediation repairs are performed nationally each week over and above other work that needs to be performed on other vehicles, for reasons not related to the recall.

According to Toyota the modifications that have already been performed represent about 70 percent of vehicles reported to be at risk for sticking accelerator pedals. The total represents about 2.3 million vehicles, according to figures published in just–auto global news. About 27 percent of the 5.4 million vehicles recalled over floor mat entrapment have been repaired.

More than 75 percent of the software updates required for the ABS problem in 2010 Prius and Lexus models have been performed. In total, 147,500 vehicles were recalled over that issue.

Meanwhile, hundreds of lawsuits have been filed in the US, with nearly 24 law firms filing cases against Toyota, according to the Financial Post.
