Hyundai Announces Airbag Recall

. By
Detroit, MIHyundai has announced vehicle recalls linked to problems with defective airbags. In all, more than 220,000 cars are affected by the recall, which was announced after Hyundai determined there were flaws in the passenger side airbag and the side curtain airbags.

According to reports, the first recall involves a defect in which the airbag does not deploy in a crash if a small-statured adult is sitting in the front passenger seat. The issue affects almost 200,000 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles from 2007 through 2009 model years. The airbags were programmed to not go off if children were in the front passenger seat—to prevent injury to children—but Hyundai reportedly received complaints from adults who weighed less than 130 pounds that the airbags did not deploy while they were in the front passenger seat.

Meanwhile, the second recall involves 2012 and 2013 Hyundai Sonata vehicles. Approximately 20,000 vehicles may contain a defect in which the side curtain airbags deploy even in situations where no collision has occurred.

So far, no injuries have been reported linked to the Sonata airbag defect, although 16 complaints were filed with Hyundai. The Santa Fe recall was reportedly issued after a class action lawsuit was filed concerning the defect.

Although airbags are designed to lessen the risk of injury or fatality in a car accident, some airbags have been defectively manufactured or designed, putting passengers in vehicles at increased risk of harm. Airbags deploying with no accident, deploying too late or not deploying at all are all problems that have been reported. Such defects can put people in vehicles at even greater risk of harm. For example, an airbag that deploys late could hit the person at an awkward angle—when he or she is too close to the unit when it deploys—causing more serious injury.

Furthermore, some airbags have deployed improperly, sending debris into the vehicle and causing harm to passengers. Lawsuits have been filed against car manufacturers alleging that some airbags were defectively designed or manufactured, putting people at risk of serious injury.

On January 20, 20220 my daughter was involved in an accident while driving my 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe. The car was hit on the front drivers side behind the bumper and tore off the whole front end of the vehicle. The airbags never deployed. She hit her head and left shoulder on the door/window. Thank goodness her injuries were not more serious. She has a bad bump on her head and is bruised and very sore. When we bought the vehicle (new) in 2008 we were impressed that there were so many airbags in it. Now we found out it was a false since of security.

I was driving to work in my 2012 Hyundai Tucson, when a driver fail to yield the right of way while making a left turn and was T-boned at 40 MPH. It was determined the other driver was at fault (ticketed by police). The airbag in my 2012 Hyundai Tucson did not deploy nor did my seat belt tighten, causing my chest to slam into the steering wheel. I was taken to the ER on two occasion ans suffered breathing problems and bruised ribs and chest wall very painful. There was a recall on the Tucson for the exact issue of driver side airbag not deploying.

My son was driving a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, hydro planned going 55 mph, front end impact with the guard rail and the air bags did not deploy. Filed a complaint with Hyundai and they hired an independent inspector and Hyundai's finding was the car performed as expected. Of course, no accountability at.

My son was just involved in a bad car wreck. His Hyundai Genesis Coupe was totaled. He had his seatbelt on and his driver side airbag deployed. But none of his other airbags deployed and he was seriously injured. If his side airbags had deployed, he would've only had minor injuries. Had he not been found, he would've bleed to death. Only 1 out of 5 airbags deployed. He flipped 4 times and hit poles and a utility shed. His airbags should've deployed. We are still in recovery.

My daughter was headed home from a friend's house it was 1 o'clock a.m. she went to make a right hand turn and hit a SUV head-on pushing the whole impact bar back until it bent destroying both front fenders both sides radiator busted and everything. The airbag did not deplore she hit her chin on the steering wheel ended up with bruises on her chin side of her face her chest her risk but I cannot understand why the airbags did not deploy as a 2014 Hyundai Accent.

In 2012, I avoided hitting a stray dog, so I hit the utility pole. It was a frontal hit, my car was totaled & fire started to engulf the car. I was injured & hospitalized. NONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. Hyundai arrogantly refused to pay me any compensation.

My Grandson and I were coming home from our local Mall Christmas Shopping. When a huge Buck Deer ran into 4 lanes of traffic. Stopped dead center in my lane. We had to hit the deer or hit cars. So the deer caved in the entire front grill, headlights, door jammed fender buckled. Air bag did NOT DEPLOY.

I was in a crash this morning Oct.26, 2016. I was driving my Hyundai Tucson Limited 2016. I was traveling About 50mph. The other driver was making a left turn on a red light. My light was green. I swerved to avoid her but couldn't. Her airbags deployed. Mine did not. Her car had much more damage. Her whole front end was demolished. My car got the most damage on the driver side front. I hit my knees on the dash board. The police & firemen were surprisef my airbags did not deploy.
Why going that speed would they not. Luckily the car survived better than her Corolla. I'm still unsure of damage to the underframe or axel of the car. We will find out later when the repair shop lets me know how extensive. The car was undrivable. Pushed in the drivers side into the wheel. Still think the airbags should have been deployed. In leg splint stabilizer from the huge impact to my knees into the dash.

On February 23, 2016, my husband and I were hit head on(driver's side of car) by a Mercedes SUV which turned into our lane while we were slowing for a stop sign. Our 2011 Sonata was a total loss and our airbags did not deploy. Perhaps because we were going so slowly? How fast do you have to be going for airbags to deploy? At any rate, the car crumpled at the impact site which prevented either of us from being injured...we walked away. If the airbags had deployed we might have been hurt.

On 11-28-2014 I was in accident and the driver airbag didn't deploy at 60 mph. All other airbags deployed. I was pronounced DOA after being air lifted to a hospital in Texas. I am now disabled for life. 2011 Hyundai Accent. Lost a lung, broken scapula, 5 ribs, 4 vertebrae, lacerated liver and spleen.

My husband had a front end collision with a jack knifed semi on I4 at @45mph. Car struck semi with significant front end and side damage, @900 front totaling vehicle (hyundai elantra 2009 original owner). Had the airbag (s) deployed it would have been totalled out. My husbands orthopedic surgeon (caused herniated/ruptured discs requiring surgery) said personal injury was definitely worse because airbags didn't deploy.

Alma, I swerved to miss a deer this wk on a wet dirt road resulting in my 2008 Hyundai Accent rolling on to its roof, no airbags deployed either. But the right side front & back airbags deployed when the tow truck turned up right, go figure.

I was in a three car collision because my 2013 kia optima lost complete power while driving. Causing me to lose all power breaks , steering, I just had to slow and roll to a stop, Causing me to be hit from behind at 35 mph. Within seconds. Then the car behind me was hit and totaled by a lincoln navigator going 45 mphs . I had to do 4 months of therapy for neck, cervical, lumbar, and lower back injuries. Also treated for migranes from the injuries. Non of my airbags deployed after being hit at 35 mph. To help prevent any of my injuries. My car had 6300.00 dollars worth of damage. The car behind me totalled. The car that hit the car behind me also had to be towed. All three drivers all had to go to the ER same day of accident. I know Hyundai and kia are made by same manufacturer. Is that why my airbags didn't deploy. Do i have a possible product liability case against Kia. There are no recalls on the 2013 Kia optima. But there is on the 2011 Kia Optima for losing complete power.

On 12/31/2014 I was involved in an accident, and the whole front portion of my car was damaged. There were no passengers in the car, but my car's (2008 Hyundai Accent) airbag did not deploy. The airbag recall description above describes claims for passenger airbags. Does the same apply for driver airbag?

I was involved in a accident about 2 weeks ago when a girl made a left hand turn right in front of my 2003 hyundai sonata which collidated into her car. I was going around 25 miles. My airbag did not deploy. Is there a certain speed and collision impact that is required to have airbags deploy. Thank you
