Soberanes Wildfire Destroying Homes and Property

Carmel Valley, CA Wildfires raging in Central California have prompted a series of evacuation warnings this past weekend, including a pre-evacuation warning issued Sunday for Rancho San Carlos, White Rock and San Rancho Clemente due to the Soberanes Fire.

With about 1,000 homes threatened, all residents in those areas were asked to be prerpared to leave their homes immediately should the evacuation warning become mandatory.

According to the local news KSBW the Soberanes Fire in Garrapata State Park has grown to 10,262 acres and was 5 percent contained at last notice.

A temporary shelter has been established at Carmel Middle School on Carmel Valley Road. The American Red Cross opened the shelter and had roughly 30 people stay the first night. The SPCA for Monterey County is also there, helping care of people and their pets.

On Friday evening, residents of Big Sur who live in the Palo Colorado Canyon neighborhood were forced to leave their homes as the fire grew closer.

According to officials, the fire sparked around 8:30 a.m. Friday. Its expected containment date is July 31. A shift in wind Saturday afternoon caused the fire to move north. More than 300 firefighters are battling the wildfire from the ground and air.

Residents are preparing for the fact that should they have to leave, there may not be anything left to go back to.
