Maytag's All Washed Up

. By
Almont, MIMaytag already settled one class action lawsuit with its front-loading washers a few years back, but its problems are far from over - it just got slapped with another recall, leaving many consumers even more frustrated - both with their washers and how Maytag handled the first recall.

Maytag recall"I bought my front-loading Maytag washer several years ago and joined a class action lawsuit that was technically settled," says Janis Grant, "but my $400 settlement had to be applied to a new $1,200 machine - I figure that Maytag actually profited from the recall."

In April 2005, Maytag settled a class action lawsuit alleging odor, mold and mildew problems with its Neptune washers. More than two million consumers who purchased a Maytag Neptune Front-Load Washing Machine (any model, including stackables) any time between April 1, 1997 to August 9, 2004 were included in the class and were entitled to replacement costs up to $500, and/or washing machine purchase certificates up to $1000.

In September 2005, Maytag recalled 5,000 Neptune top-loading washing machines - it had received reports that the spinner could malfunction and break apart, posing a safety risk to consumers.

Grant received a certificate for a replacement machine but it was only available by special order, a very overpriced top-loading machine. "My settlement was for $400 to be applied to this $1,200 machine, so the net outlay for us would have been $800," says Grant. "As anyone can see, the restrictions placed upon certificate redemption only worked in Maytag's favor, not the consumer's. This was an outrageous sum. In the long run, Maytag profited from the settlement and the recall!

When I got involved, I was appalled that Maytag could profit from a settlement. I think I just tossed this certificate out. I ended up buying a second-hand washer and it was definitely not a Maytag: I've had it for more than five years and it is working well. Meanwhile, the Maytag is sitting in my basement collecting dust. My impression from researching about Maytag online is that they knew they had a defective product. I'm not knowledgeable about these matters but I could smell a skunk!"

What about all of us who bought the top loading Maytag Neptune machines that got screwed because the machines are absolute lemons and we get no help with them. We just spend our lives changing out expensive parts, if we are lucky enough to find parts or are forced to buy a new machine. We've spent 14 years constantly replacing and now parts are no longer available on most of the machine. These machines should have recalled years ago. Thanks Maytag for nothing!!!!!

I bought my Maytag front loader in July of 2007. I have to keep the door open after use because it has a musty smell. I bought some kind of cleaner to run through it occasionally and it helps a little, but the product is very expensive so I don't use it as much as it's needed. Very unhappy with this machine. I will never buy another front loader washing machine. The dryer wrinkles everything no matter what setting it's on. DO NOT RECOMMEND EITHER WASHER OR DRYER.

OK I bought a Neptune set back about 13yrs ago used. I had no idea there was a class action lawsuit against Maytag at the time. I bought from a lady out in the country with five boys. I tried the dryer but unfortunately, could not try the washer. She said it worked perfectly, she was a liar of course. I got it home and nothing but cold water and when it spun, it sounded like a jet taking off in the basement. So I went online then and did the research. Upper control board needed a repair ($39) private vendor. The wax switch I replaced ($15) and then the biggie...the drum bearings and a new seal kit ($70) and a lot of personal labor I wouldn't recommend to anyone. But the machine has run flawlessly for 13yrs. The mold issue I solved by installing a plug above the machine with a switch. I open the front door and the detergent door and then flip the switch to kill electricity to the machine. I would never own Maytag again.

I purchased a Neptune stack unit quite a few years ago but I feel my input is applicable in present day. I experienced qwerky behavior from this machine. most times it would just stop and I would have to restart it 20+ times. at times it would not advance so I would try to push it along, that didn't help. then after a few starters it just wouldn't start at all. I just think it is an evil lemon. while it worked, it was awesome. The dryer is still working. Just a bad machine. sometimes you win and sometimes you lose

Purchased a maytag top loader Bravos xl in June 0f 2012 for my permanent residence. The reason for this purchase is that I had purchased one for my summer beach home two years prior and I liked the job it did. Well that ended up to be a big mistake. Within three years the summer home washer,s bearings went. The repair man said it would costs well over three hundred to fix and not guarantee that something else would go on the machine, His charge was $80.00 to tell me this. Well after 3 years 9 months guess what the same thing happened to the washer in our home. I called Maytag they tried to sell me a new warranty for 322.00 for one year. I complained to Maytag but no success. They kept saying how they understood and how sorry they were. We removed the washer from our laundry room and the floor was black same problem as the other washer. Will never buy another maytag again.

I have a Maytag set and the Neptune washer from Maytag was a night mare. All the money I put on that Maytag washer I could had bought myself a new washer. I tried my best to keep it because I have the expensive dryer but in possible. My home owners insurance called a repair man. The repair man said he cannot fix my Neptune washer it was beyond fixing because of a part. Maytag had this washer rigged so you have to purchase another Maytag washer. Not happy

How do I find out if my washer is included in this settlement? We were buying Maytag products because of their reputation. But we have not been pleased with our most recent purchases. The finish peeled off the inside of my dryer...I contacted Maytag and because it was a month after the warranty time they said it would cost me $200+ for a new drum. My "Stainless Steel" refridgerator door is scratched, didn't think stainless steel could be scratched. I have to clean the mold out from under the rubber door seal, and the soap dispenser every couple of weeks. Don't think I will be buying anymore Maytag products.

We saw the info this am on a TV station about Maytag Washers. We purchased one several years ago and it stinks. There is so much mold on the rubber and we have tried everything to get rid of it and cannot. If there us still a lawsuit pending we would like to know so we can get that piece of junk replaced. Thank you

If their is any class action suit for Maytag Bravo 300 Top Loader Washers let me known! This washer is a junker! I wouldn't tell anyone to buy it. It won't even wash a small load of close. their is not enough water to get the close clean or rinse the soak off! I only have washed three loads and none of the clothes are clean and they have soap spots! Clothes are in worse shape after washing? After the last settlement for their front loaders it sounds like some lawyers payday! Is this a shame that consumers that need help are not protected and are taken advantage by the lawyers that are suppose to help them? That's the way of the World rich get rich and consumers pay the price! This is why Companies like Maytag don't care! Shame on them the new this was Junk but sold it anyway! There is no integrity and honesty in Companies that take advantage of Consumers to pay for their design mistakes! Trust not in Man and especially Maytag!

My Maytag Neptune stops in middle cycles or just won't finish the spins and now, stinks bad and all my clothes smell bad. Had this issue 2 years after buying it brandnew

My machine isn't moldy- I practice drying out the gaskets with a towel each time that I use it. Then I leave the door open over night. But a couple of weeks past it's one year warrantee, it will no longer spin the water out of wash loads. If I have rugs or carpets, they are too sopping wet to put into a dryer.

Any solutions out there? Must I hire a lawyer? I bought this machine brand new, and I've used only HE soaps as recommended...

Are there any current class action law suite still going on with Maytag washers. I also have a moldy machine. I do appraisal and have gone to several homes over the past couple of years and everyone I have talked to have the same problem. I never was notified about any class action law suites in past about these washers. Is there anything we can do at this point to get our money back for at least the wash machine. I have also thrown away towels, bed sheets and clothing because of the smell. I think Maytag owes us much more than just a wash machine.

I purchased a Maytag Bravos washing machine around 5yrs ago. I did not purchase an additional warranty thinking Maytag machines last a long time. I was totally wrong. Just recently our expensive top load Maytag is making loud noises when running. I had a service rep come out and he said it would cost around $600.00 to replace a bad bearing. I only paid the service call which was over $100.00. I will never purchase another Maytag again.

I have a Maytag Neptune. Since I have had it my clothes are always musty. Not all the clothes mostly my hubby's shirts and towels. I do everything I am suppose to do. I use HE soap clean it out all the time leave the door opened. Yesterday I tried the bleach again. When I noticed the bleach was in the tub waiting a few minutes and stopped the machine opened the door and the whole inside was full of soap. So when it finished I tried it again and the same thing soap. So I called Maytag today and now I am suppose to put finger in the drum and wash it on hot water then wash it twice on hot water. I spend more time washing this machine out. I will try this one more time.

Maytag Appliances- biggest rip off ever! Home Depot needs to stop carrying Maytag appliances.
December 30, 2014
I purchased a Maytag washer Type 832-A, Model number MHWE200XW00, Serial number HL11990545 in May, 2011 from Home Depot. After just three years it flooded my laundry room. Home Depot couldn’t help me, and Maytag Customer Service tried to really rip me off.
I called Home Depot, asked why they continued to carry a product they knew had terrible complaints and all they could tell me was they are sorry I am unhappy with my washer, then gave me Maytag’s customer service number.
I called Maytag- first the guy tried to sell me a $400 extended warranty package- total rip off, Maytag should be ashamed, then said he couldn’t help because it was past the time period. There is no telling how many people they are ripping off with that little deal. Consumer Affairs should be all over this. So then he offered to get a Maytag repairman to come to my house, but couldn’t tell me how much the diagnostic visit would cost or anything else. He was worthless.
I hired a local repair person to come to my home, the part is $140, its the tub seal, weak and flimsy- has a giant hole. I only wash clothes and towels, nothing else. My local guy is cutting me a deal on the labor, still going to be $200.
Maytag isn’t what they used to be and I will never, ever purchase another product from them again, ever. And I would suggest you don’t either. Maytag appliances only last a couple years at the most, and its customer service is horrid.

I bought a maytag 3000 series in 2011. I have had to call a technician out twice. the power button no longer works now. In order to purchase the part will be $250. wont buy a maytag anymore

I bought a maytag bavos xl, two years ago after reading about it on the maytag website and talking to the salesman at the appliance store.
I have not been happy with it since the first time I used it you cant do large loads in it, and it doesnt get the clothes as clean as a regular top load washer.

Two months ago I started a load in my washer and a few minits later I go in my hallway and there is water everywhere, even went though the wall into my kitchen floor.

At first I thought the hose behind the washer broke, but when I checked the washer after pulling all the clothes out the agitater wouldn't move its froze up.
My husband recently passed away too,

So now I have a useless washer I can't afford to fix and I have to wash my clothes at the laundromat..
I had always thought maytag to be a trusted brand, not anymore.
After reading on more consumer websites this is a big problem with these washers.
I won't buy maytag again.

Bought a Maytag Neptune Washer and Gas Dryer in 2001. Combo has been a work horse. My wife does at least 2 to 3 loads a day( 365 days x 2 x 13 years = at least 9,490 loads) and the washer has been great. Yes mold can build up on the rubber drum seal, but leave the door opened overnight to dry out and you wont have this problem. I did just replace the dryer. Its started squealing. I replaced the belt and the 2 rollers and the squeal did not stop. At this point it can only be one of 2 things. The Belt pulley or motor bearings. I figure 12 years is long enough so I went out and bought a new Maytag Bravos XL. So far the dryer is working great.

What has become of the quality in May Tag appliances ? I bought a new washer and dryer 2006, After 4 year's went by it's been much nothing but problems and repair on both washer and dryer.I was told that I was buying the top of the line on these appliances, I will never buy from may tag again. I am 58 and have never experienced such poor quality in appliances.

Maytag Neptune front loading washer & dryer purchased in 2004 as part of building a new house. No issues for several years, then we noticed our towels smelled *foul*. Blamed it on not always promptly removing clothes when wash cycle finished for a long time, but that didn't resolve issue. Last year I finally researched on-line, only to find out I was too late for the settlement (such as it was). Per online research I started using 1-2 cups vinegar in each load of wash and Affresh on a monthly basis. The foul odor in towels has been eliminated, but gee whiz... it would have been nice to be notified by mfg of the class action lawsuit & resolution thereof in time to evaluate filing. Although we love the front load concept, we would do research on current state of these prior to replacing with another. Purchase was made thru reputable upscale kitchen store locally. Repairs made twice by Maytag to washer (not odor issue related), no mention of class action lawsuit then either.

We had a Maytag Bravo top loader for 4 years (2009-2012). It was leaking. The repairman told us that repairs would cost $1400 and it wasn't worth it. He also reassured us that Maytag would do NOTHING for us. What great customer service! It did extensive damage to our flooring. Do NOT buy any Maytag products. We bought several because we were under the impression they were "dependable." We have had a problem with every appliance and they are not that old. My advice is to never, never buy a Maytag anything!

Bought a Maytag Centenial couple of years ago. Said it was Commercial Grade. I have had it only about 2 years now and the tub has worn out where it spins the tub and leaks. No seal will help it. A new tub costs another 200.00. Poor quality. I say if you are going to purchase a new washer and dryer buy the very basic, cheapest. Everything is made "disposable" now. No one stands behind their products anymore. It is all about making a buck.

I purchased a new Maytag Neptune washer in 2006. Model # MAH5500BWW. Serial # A2973888CE. I now have an error code "Lr". After searching the internet, I discovered I need a new motor. After researching on the internet, I need a new motor. But Maytag had to modify the motor, so the consumer if forced to buy a control board as well (if what I have read on the repair sites is correct). Why should I have to pay for both? It is not my fault that they had to make corrections to their product post-production. How can I get my washing machine repaired at no cost? I refuse to pay even a penny. This washer should have lasted longer than 6 years!!!

Thinking I had the best! Wrong, I had it 2 1/2 years and the washer bearings went out to the tune of $380.00. I live alone and at the most wash 3 small loads a week. I was told too bad by the supervisor "Renna" from Tennessee ! The sad part is the used appliance store would not trade my washer and my dryer ,which was fine, for a used set... They said they did not want any Maytag appliances in there store because they were CRAP!!! The government should step in and make Maytag make it right with so many disgruntled customers!!!

I purchased a Maytag washer for $746.29 less than two years ago, used it only twice a week, and it stopped working. Repairs would cost $991.36. When I called Maytag, their reps said only: "I am sorry, there is nothing we can do."

I purchased 6 Maytag appliances in 2004 from Home depot. A refridgerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave, Washer, and Dryer. I believed that Maytag was the best, I could not have been more wrong. The only Items that I didn't have any problems with were the Dryer and the Stove. When I called because of a problem with the washer the repair man came out and found that a penny had cloged the pump. 1penny cost me $150. As other parts of the washer fell apart I've had to fix it myself 5 times. The computer never worked right. this washer was a P.O.S. since day one. I WILL NEVER BUY MAYTAG AGAIN OR ANY OF THIER OTHER BRANDS.
