Washington, DC: The long-term use of drugs classed as proton pump inhibitors or PPIs , and marketed variously as Prevacid, Prilosec or Nexium, is dangerous for many reasons. Kidney damage, the focus of recently consolidated multidistrict litigation, is not the only problem. Long-term PPI use has also been associated with bone fractures and dementia in women, as well as the risk of birth defects. The issue for the lawsuits to come will be whether drug makers gave patients adequate warning of the dangers associated with their products and thus the opportunity to make informed choices.

Washington, DC:Plaintiffs who have filed lawsuits alleging that proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medications such as Nexium, Prilosec and Prevacid caused their kidney injuries have filed a motion to consolidate 172 pending federal lawsuits to a multidistrict litigation under one New Jersey judge.

Portland, OR: They're the pills millions of people use to treat symptoms of acid reflux, but in addition to being linked to serious side effects, proton pump inhibitors may also be linked to health problems when people discontinue the medications. Studies suggest proton pump inhibitors (known also as PPIs), are linked to an increased risk of bone fractures, heart attacks, and kidney disease. Concerns have also been raised, however, that when patients discontinue their use of PPIs, they suffer more serious heartburn symptoms.

Los Angeles, CA: Plaintiffs involved in Nexium lawsuits have opposed AstraZeneca's motion to dismiss the lawsuits. In all, up to 58 lawsuits are involved, with plaintiffs alleging they were not given the opportunity to fix reported issues with the lawsuits, including not having paperwork submitted in time. According to National Law Journal (3/13/14), more than 730 plaintiffs have reportedly not filed necessary paperwork.

Boston, MA Patients who began taking Nexium before an updated warning was issued about the risk of Nexium side effects may be eligible to file a lawsuit if they suffered a fracture or bone degradation, but they must speak to an attorney soon. That is because the statute of limitations began running when the updated warning was announced. Furthermore, they must be able to show that because of the length of time they took the drug and the dose they took it at, it is likely the Nexium caused their fracture and not something else, says Ben Stewart, of Stewart Law Group PLLC.
