Immigration nightmare

My son went to college in Arizona and he was involved with a girl and they have a daughter that was born September 2003. Miriam then went home to Mexico and Corey moved home after graduation.
Miriam came to St. Louis with her mother and the baby (Nancy) in July of 2004. Her mother stayed for a week and then went home to Mexico where they have a restaurant and hotel. Miriam and Nancy stayed for 3 months and went home towards the end of October.

The next summer 2005 Nancy came the first part of July and stayed for a couple of months. During this time her brother was born and I thought it would be easier for Miriam to heal after having a c-section, so Nancy came to stay with us. My husband and daughter took Nancy back to Mexico in August 2005 and this gave them the opportunity to meet the new baby.

They now plan to get married and in December 2005 my son went to Mexico to bring Nancy up here thinking it would be easier for Marian to fly with just one child. Here is it 9 months later and we are still not sure when Miriam with receive her fiancé visa to travel to the US.

In the mean time my son has accepted a job back in Arizona and is getting an apartment together for his family. We are keeping Nancy here with us until her mother comes up. She is going to day care, speaks English and misses her mother very much. We call Miriam and send pictures, but it’s not the same as having your child with you. This is such an important time in Nancy’s life and she really needs to be with her mother. Miriam misses her and she needs to be with her too. Since she has no passport and is over the age of 2 she can not go back to Mexico.

August 7th we had to write a letter to INS stating we would sponsor Miriam, which would not be a problem. At every turn there seems to be something new that comes up to block the process. After Miriam’s first meeting she found out immigrations would need a copy of our tax returns, so we had them faxed through a Kinko’s so they would have them they would have them before the next scheduled meeting. At that time they told her our son would have to be present since she had been in the U.S. illegally and planned to meet again on the 7th of September.

So we planned a trip around this meeting thinking Miriam and Sebastian would be able to come across the border. We just returned from El Paso on Saturday September 9, needless to say it was a waste of time. Immigration did at this time grant US Citizenship for Sebastian but still nothing was done for Miriam to grant her a visa since she had extended her work visa when she had been is Arizona in 2004. She now has another scheduled meeting for the 19th of September to apply for a visa which they might grant and again may not along with a fee of 350. If she is granted a visa at that time it could be another wait any where from 3 to 6 months. Then there is also a good chance she might not get it. Juarez is a 2 day drive from where her family lives in Yuriria Mexico where her parents have a restaurant and hotel. So for the past month her mother is with her helping her with Sebastian and I’m sure it’s a drain on their family as well.

I know with the immigration issues going on it is a tough time but when you try to go through the proper channels and you keep hitting obstacles I am wondering what can we do? I totally agree there need to be controls on people entering this country illegally and taking advantage of the system we have in place but I know my grandparents came from Italy and they worked hard for what they had.

I have tried to contact our senators and have not had any response. Now I’m thing about going to the new media out let to get something done.
