Skechers Reaches $1.2M Settlement in Missed Break OT Class Action

Los Angeles, CA: A preliminary $1.2 million settlement agreement has been tentatively approved, potentially ending an unpaid overtime class action lawsuit filed against Skechers USA Inc, by about 4,800 employees who allege the shoe retailer deprived them of meal and rest breaks and failed to pay overtime.

According to the terms of the settlement, between $357,000 and $714,000 would be paid out to class members, with named plaintiffs each receiving $5,000 in incentive awards.

According to court documents, some 4,800 class members were notified and 1,221 submitted potentially valid claims, and no class members opted out or objected. Rerpotedy, the average share of the settlement for class members would be about $292.

The lawsuit was filed by lead plaintiff Roneshia Sayles in 2011, alleging Skechers unlawfully withheld pay from employees, including compensation for missed meal and rest breaks, overtime and earned wages, in violation of California labor laws.

The case is Roneshia Sayles v. Skechers USA Inc., case number BC473067, in the Superior Court of the State of California, County of Los Angeles.
