Vatterott College to Pay $13M Settlement in Student Fraud Lawsuit

This is a settlement for the lawsuit.

Kansas City, MO: A $13 million settlement has been awarded by a jury hearing a consumer fraud lawsuit against Vatterott College. Jennifer Kerr, a 42-year old single mother, sued the college alleging its enrollment procedures caused her to spend thousands of dollars and extra time earning a certificate that proved to be useless in the job market.

Specifically, Kerr alleged that she enrolled at Vatterott in 2009 with plans to become a nurse. While the college doesn't offer a nursing program, Kerr alleges she was told by a college representative that she could take their medical assistant' degree, which would help her in becoming a nurse.

As a result of this advice, Kerr claims she secured over $27,000 in loans and took the program for almost 60 weeks, when she was told that she was in fact enrolled in a preliminary medical office assistant' program. Further, Kerr claims she was told that in order for her to get the medical assistant' degree, she would need to take a total of 90 weeks and spend at least $10,000 more.

The jury hearing her case determined that the Missouri-based Vatterott Educational Centers Inc. had violated the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act. It ordered the corporation to pay Kerr $27,676 in actual damages and $13 million in punitive damages.

I went to vatterott college and finshed with shit be a hope and dream. I graduated in 2014 and was told i was going to get a job. I graduated with a degree in Plumbing tech. Which seem to be good at the time they told me i would learn from the best do hands on which the lab was closed most of time for auto classes. Messed up because i was in plumbing so that took the hands on away from me. Its 5 years later and i have 40,000 dollars of debt that hurts my finances deeply. The degree means nonthing because i have had 8 job interviews for plumbing and 7 of them said my have hired people form vatterott college and have had bad luck. I have a wife and 2 kids and big debt that i wish can just go away. I wish i could go back in time and tell them to fuck off instead of getting tricked, played , and just lied too.

I too attended Vatterott college in st.louis, some of my instructors were very knowledgeable from the hands on experience they had on there own most of the time we were being taught how to cut corners most of my class mates had to either attend school or get a job per their parole officer so nobody took it serious I even started working in the apartment maintenance field became a supervisor learning things as I go because vatterott didnt have the equipment all we learned how to work on was gas furnaces, one of my instructors became one of my employees and didnt know anything about fixing condenser nor furnaces vatterott was a RIP off and they taught us by reading and getting answers straight from the book someone needs to do something about this

If the school has been proven to be incompetent several times over and lawsuits have been won, why can't the government just forgive the student loan programs for the students who attended these colleges? I, also was a student in the med program- my credits would not transfer as I was promised they would. The "Professors" that I had were very nice ladies but also were not certified. How is this allowed? I no longer work in the medical field - for one the money I was promised to make never happened, and two I did not have the proper training for what I was doing.
I have been contacted about the lawsuit and filling claim but was told it would cost me more money, I told them to get lost - because I have spent enough money on the BS. Any thoughts or help in this matter - maybe a call from a legitimate lawyer would be fantastic.

I was told to complete the class would cost $29,000 without the Grants. After my grants it should have been $1350 less per semester. So why in the hell am I $59,000 in debt now?? Nobody will send me itemized statement of charges. Now the school has just closed and without even telling any of the current employees or students.

Where do I begin?? Oweing over 13k on a loan from 18 years ago. Took computer courses, no job and yet to receive a degree or certificate. Deceptive enrollment and now the Federal Government is going to take my tax returns and anything else they can. Not one instructor was certified and a student actually finished teaching the course I was in. Vatterott is a joke and needs to be shut down.

I went to Vatterott college and I have to pay almost a 1000 to get my associate deploma. Based on a scholar ship that they didn't give me. And I can't get my associates or even go back to college. We had the same books for three of my classes in bussiness. And the professor even mocked there teaching but I had already spent so much time in there that leave was not worth it I graduated bit receive almost not I got my cap and goan I paid for and my tasseles.

I went through the medical office course. One class a student enrolled in the course with me was fresh outta high school had to get up and teach the math because the lady teaching didnt know how to do the math. She was a nurse from a podiatrist office. The teacher that taught our computor course didnt know how to do the program and kept changing her mind on how to do it. It got so confusing. I'm in over my head in student loans of $32,000 for a education I never recieved correctly. After getting all these student loans on the week of graduation i was told i couldnt graduate until i paid another $1,200. I could not believe they wanted more money.
I should of fought it years ago. I graduated from this bogus school in 2008 and still fighting to make payments.

I also went to Vatterott, but for HVAC; the whole thing was one big lie. I had THREE different instructors, and each one had their one way of teaching this stuff; while that is kind of to be expected, each one having different experiences and such, the thing is that the information one instructor gave out, contradicted the other two causing confusion, one of them even said that half of the stuff that was in the books that was given to me was out of date, causing even more confusion, which is something you don't want to do when you're working with things that goes BOOM! They even admitted that if such a thing did happen, it will be my fault not the schools. And speaking of books, the lab book that was given to us that gives us a more hands-on approach, I've found that the school is nowhere near equipped to handle everything that the book is showing me. So now I'm stuck with an almost $30,000 loan, with nothing to show for it, praying for the day that I would be forgiven for this loan.

I took the HVAC class in 2009 and my teacher would skip through the book then leave to do side jobs and leave us in the lab , Was taking money for grades. I was supposed to take final and he new I was there waiting for him and he left and I didn't graduate. So I owe $30000 and companies say they don't like to hire from vatterott because they don't know what they are doing. I was stuck with the bill dean did nothing to help so I can't join he union because of the test we take was skipped in class. I moved to Louisiana and it was all R410a and electric heating wich was skipped in class because we wouldn't need to know that chapter. I needed that degree bad still do.

My son was told he would be able to pass the Electricians Program. They tested him and said he had the aptitude. He borrowed $4000.00, completed the First Semester with difficulty and when he started the Second Semester he knew he could not pass the program and dropped out, now owing $4000.00 and making $9.00 an hour.
A few years later he was attacked and suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury. We put his loan repayment on hold. The US Federal Government is now taking out of his Disability Check the payment for this loan and they are charging 18% interest, penalties and fines of $769.00 for $1309 of debt. What is going on???!!!!

Literally just finished Diseal machanic program. School is a joke we literally never even receieved the books for the math class. Learned absolutely nothing. School kept funds from my loans that where supposed to be dispersed to me had to fight for weeks to get them. I was awarded a scholarship worth $2000 one person is telling me it will be created to my student account another is saying they give it to FASFA. So in otherwards they are stealing my money. No one ever knows what the hell is going on. There was no aid in finding a job. They screwed up my financial aid filling. Im a veteran currently serving in the reserves and have student loans because nothing was filled properly with the reserves. I now habe thousands and thousands in loans, no jon prospects in my field, a missing scholarship and im supposed to pick up an associates degree today but the office keeps sayung its a diploma and a certificate. Ready to sue when you all are!

I went to the computer class at Vatterrot in Quincy IL. I over paid because they did not stand up to their word to find graduates placement in the job field. A few years after I got out of there they eliminated the class and the company that took over my students loan has split it 4 ways, added ungodly interest and has destroyed my credit.

I enrolled into the bussniess management class and wasn't never told my credits would transfer I've been out of class for 4 years and have never been able to use my associate's degree in business management it was a waste of money

I am in the same situation. I went into the Electrical program, got a 4.0 all through school. I too was a single mom working a full time job, and driving an 1.5 one way to school every day. I didn't learn hardly anything, the teachers practically gave you all the answers, of there were even teachers available. Teachers dropped like flies throughout my program. I was told I was get my Associates degree, then towards the end of my program I was told that I was getting my Diploma, and in order to get my Associates I had to continue on to a different program for 30 more weeks and $10,000 more dollars! I have been graduated for 4 years and still haven't obtained work in the Electrical field. The unions have all told me that I waisted my money going to Vatterott because if I wanted to be an electrician I could have just applied with them and went through apprenticeship program and they would have paid me to go through their program. Now I have no job and all this student loan debt! I don't want to sue for a big lot of money or anything, I just wish my student loans would be forgiven and that this school would be shut down, it's a joke and they are ripping people off!

I feel all of you guys. I went to the cosmetology program offered at Vatterott, in 2014. I wad only thwre for 2 weeks before corporate came in and said that they were shutting the cosmetology program down, and replacing it with mechanics. I was told that the school had an 85% success rate. I was told that I would get a 30 day leave after I had my baby. I was told my hard work would pay off. All lies. I ended up getting no leave and forced out of school before my 11 month program was up. Vatterott told me that I had to pay all of the money up front before I would get my transcripts, which btw they illegally doctored. Not only would I have to pay for what student loans didn't cover, but also what they covered. Basically the entire $17,250. Dale was the administrator at the time. Desirae was my teacher. They brought me into Dale's office and told me because of my GPA being at a 1.65 I had to drop out and pay everything back. That is also a lie. My GPA was nowhere near that low. My records showed I had a GPA of 3.25. I could even tell where they used white out on my original transcripts before they copied it and showed me the copy. They refused to show me my original documents. I knew they were lying. I scored the highest grade according to another teacher on the midterm. She said it was the highest score she had seen in 15 yrs. I knew Dale was full of shit. Dale and Desirae told me that was my last day. I said, fuck no. I will see you when class starts tomorrow. The next day I showed up they were at my classroom door threatening to call the cops. I said, "Go ahead, I'm still not leaving." They never called the cops. The following week I decided to leave and talk to a lawyer. Upon arriving at Vatterott to get my things, I saw the janitor heading out back with 13 gallon clear garbage backs full of documented papers. Convenient, huh?

I am going to vatterott as well. This school is a joke. They have told me to get me to come to there school that they are a credited school and the credits transfer. That was a lie. How if you are working somewhere you can do your externship there and ve paid for it. That was a lie as well. Never could give me a straught up price on books. That they cant do that in the medical field. Didnt find out til my term 3 that i was about to owe them $800 cause they went over my student loans. So i had to max them out. Also have been told by several people just this pass month that I was wasted my time there. People don't hire students from there in the medical field. Just very upset. Cause i am almost done and wasted my mom. Just by tring ti better my self for my family. I hate that i was lied to to attend. I three terms of student that can say the same and there issues. False advertisement is what they did to me and there is nothing i can do about it.

I can relate, i was sold with the promisary of job placement and a "employer list" of companies affiliated with their HVAC program. I knew their was a problem, when instructors were rotating like clock work. I had 2 phases with an instructor, Justin was his nameo and HVAC was not his gameo. Several of us signed grievances, just to have it ignored and were told that if we stepped away we were still liable for paying full price. This was the worst financial mistake, i finished but nothing is recognized. The worst thing about it all, is i paid 30,000$ for something that was suppose to improve my quality of life. When in reality your actually looked at as if your an idiot for even falling into the scam. Its been 6 years since i graduated, i had one call from Don for a job that wasnt even in my field. He told me i would have to work my way up. Still working my same job lol, im glad to see their being held for their misleading practices.

I was told that I would be able to transfer my credits and no school will accept them. If i was told that they were non transferable I would have never went there and spent all that money. They only reason I got a job in the medical field because I knew someone that work there. My other classmates had problems getting jobs. Now I'm in date and can't afford to go back to school to get a higher education.
