Face Mask Manufacturer Pays $775K to Ed HickoxWashington, DC: Major League Baseball umpire, Ed Hickox, was awarded a $775,000 settlement in his product liability lawsuit against Wilson Sporting Goods that alleged Hickox had suffered injury during the 2005 baseball season as a result of a defective face mask.On May 14, 2005, Ed Hickox was umpiring a Washington Nationals' game at RFK Stadium when a foul ball struck the throat guard of his face mask. The impact dislodged the mask's metal frame and pushed the frame into Hickox's ear canal. His left jaw and ear sustained the brunt of the impact. Hickox filed a products liability lawsuit against Wilson on the basis that the mask was defectively designed and failed to adequately protect his face. Hickox also argued that Wilson failed to adequately test the mask.
