Veteran Receives $250,000 Settlement Over Negligent Medical Care

San Jose, CA: A veteran who alleged that he became blind as a result of negligent medical treatment at a VA hospital in Palo Alto, has won his lawsuit. The federal government has agreed to pay him $250,000 in damages to settle the suit.

David E. Woodward Sr. filed the lawsuit against the U.S. government in March. He was one of eight eye patients receiving treatment at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System that hospital officials contacted in 2009 with news that they had received improper care that may have caused some vision loss. An investigation into hospital practices revealed that the hospital's optometrists had not followed an internal policy that required all patients with glaucoma to have their treatment overseen and reviewed by an ophthalmologist, a medical doctor that specializes in eye care.
