Mother Awarded $6 Million in Negligence Lawsuit

Clarksville, TN: The mother of a young girl who developed cerebral palsy as a result of alleged negligence on the part of the doctor who delivered the child, has been awarded a $6 million settlement. The doctor was on contract with the Blanchfield Army Community Hospital at Fort Campbell. Sahra Sutton sued him in September 2008 alleging negligence, because he did not perform a Cesarean section in a timely manner to prevent oxygen loss to the brain of Matdison Carter.

"The midwife told the doctor she needed to do a C-section, but the doctor told me to continue pushing," Sutton said. Sutton's daughter developed breathing problems shortly after she was born on March 5, 2006, and was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she was placed in an incubator for more than a month.

While Blanchfield officials would not comment directly on the case, neither the hospital, the Army or the doctor admit any wrongdoing as part of the settllement.
