Jury Verdict Awards Woman $9.45 Million in Prempro Lawsuit

Philadelphia, PA: A jury has awarded a verdict of $6 million in damages and $3.45 million in compensatory damages to Audrey Singleton, in her lawsuit against Wyeth, the makers of the hormone replacement therapy (HRT) Prempro.

In her suit, Singleton alleged that she developed breast cancer after taking Prempro. The case is the first in the country involving a plaintiff diagnosed with breast cancer well after the July 2002 release of data from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). The WHI was stopped early due to an association between HRT and an increased risk for breast cancer in the women randomized to HRT on study.

Singleton's attorney believes the jury's verdict is significant because her client had been prescribed Prempro during the period when Wyeth was changing the labeling as a result of the WHI findings. The jury found that Wyeth didn't react appropriately to the WHI.
