Price-Fixing Case Costs Wellpoint $10 Million

Wellpoint has agreed to pay $10 million to settle allegations of price fixing brought by New York State's Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.

Wellpoint is the country's largest health insurer, serving some 5 million customers in New York.

The settlement results from a year long investigation by Cuomo's office into how reimbursement rates were set for out-of-network health care. The investigation revealed a monopoly created by the big health insurers, including UnitedHealth Group, Aetna, and Cigna.
