Racism and Harassment

Brooklyn, NY: (Mar-10-08) U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission brought charges against Books for Less LLC, alleging racial and sexual harassment. The lawsuit claimed that the company, which has a warehouse in the Pittsburgh, PA, suburb of Blawnox and an office in New York, targeted black men and women as well as whites who associated with blacks. EEOC also alleged that the work environment included references to the warehouse as a plantation, frequent use of the N-word, calling blacks stupid and lazy and paying black employees less than other workers.

As part of settlement reached Books for Less agreed to pay $180,000 to resolve the litigation. In addition to the monetary payment, the settlement provides for anti-discrimination training for the owner, managers and employees. [PITTSBURGH BUSINESS TIMES: BOOKSELLER SETTLES HARASSMENT SUIT]
