Immigrant Marriages

Wilkes-Barre, PA: (Jan-29-08) Heather Buck and Jose Guadelupe Arias-Maravilla brought charges against Luzerne County Register of Wills Dorothy Stankovic, alleging that Stankovic's policy denied marriage licenses to illegal immigrants. Records show that the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a federal lawsuit against Stankovic in April, arguing her policy that required applicants to produce a valid visa to receive a marriage license violated the Pennsylvania and US constitutions. Buck was a legal resident, but Arias-Maravilla, a resident of Mexico, admitted he was in the United States illegally. The couple, who had an infant son, were seeking to get married prior to May 12, when Arias-Maravilla was scheduled to be deported. As part of a settlement reached, sources close to the case stated that Dorothy Stankovic agreed to pay $10,000 to resolve allegations. [TIMES LEADER: IMMIGRANT MARRIAGES]
