Medical MalpracticeJacksonville, FL: (Jan-18-08) The family of Betty Jean Plato, a Middleburg woman, brought a lawsuit against the government, after Plato died after undergoing eight surgeries in just over a month at Jacksonville Naval Hospital. Hospital records show that Plato, 76, died in 2005 of a blood infection after showing up with abdominal pain at the hospital emergency room at Jacksonville Naval Air Station. She underwent eight surgeries over 35 days. The suit, filed by her family, alleged that the Navy failed to properly evaluate or diagnose her condition, provide reasonable care or transfer her on time to a facility equipped to manage her medical condition. As part of a settlement reached, sources close to the case revealed that the government had agreed to pay $750,000 to settle the medical malpractice lawsuit.
