Professor Harassment

Athens, OH: (Dec-27-07) Christy Speakman, an Ohio University former graduate student, brought a lawsuit against the university, alleging that she was sexually harassed by a professor. Speakman filed suit in February 2007, naming as defendants both the university and former OU art professor Yoshitomo Saito. In the complaint, Speakman alleged that Saito began sexually harassing her in spring 2002 when she enrolled in a sculpture course he taught, and continued harassing her through September 2005. She claimed that though she repeatedly complained, the university took no action to stop the professor. Sources stated that the parties had reached a settlement in which Ohio University and its insurer will pay $225,000 to resolve allegations. Joe Brennan, executive director of OU Communications and Marketing, confirmed that the university will pay $100,000, while its insurer will cover the rest of the amount.
