Medicare Fraud

Washington, DC: (Dec-26-07) The federal government brought charges against Saint Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta Inc. and Saint Joseph's Health System Inc., alleging that the medical facility violated the False Claims Act with regard to billing for inpatient admissions and other services. The suit, filed by the Justice Department, claimed that an investigation into the facilities practices revealed that the hospital submitted fraudulent Medicare claims to the government. Where services should have been billed as outpatient visits, the hospital charged a higher rate by documenting it as inpatient admissions. The violations were said to have taken place from the years 2000 through 2005.

As part of a settlement reached, Saint Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta Inc. and Saint Joseph's Health System Inc. have agreed to pay the United States $26 million to resolve allegations. The whistleblower lawsuit was filed by Tami Ramsey, a former hospital employee. Ramsey, a registered nurse, will receive $4.94 million as her share of the recovery in the case.
