Religious Beard

Delaware County, PA: (Dec-04-07) Gary Majors, 42, of Chester, brought charges against a Brookhaven Burger King in November 2004, alleging that his religious rights were violated when he was wrongfully terminated from his job as a food handler. Majors, who is Muslim, claimed that he was fired from his job at Burger King after refusing to shave his beard. Sources stated that while the fast food restaurant did have a clean shaven policy, employees were allowed to have facial hair for religious purposes. Majors claimed that he was in good standing for many years and that he was fired without being given the option of wearing a chin guard for his short, well-groomed beard. As part of a settlement reached, Majors will receive a $15,800 payout and managers at several suburban Burger Kings will receive special training on religious rights.
