Psychiatric Facility Malpractice

This is a settlement for the Medical Malpractice lawsuit.

Washington, DC: (Oct-10-07) The family of Frank Harris Jr. brought a lawsuit against the District of Columbia, alleging that Harris was blinded as a result of neglect at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. The suit stated that Harris, 55, who has schizophrenia, has been committed to the Southeast Washington psychiatric facility since 1973. The family claimed that hospital staff failed to properly supervise Harris after he spoke about demons who were telling him to pull out his eyes. Despite several warnings, Harris used his hands to gouge out his eyes. Since the incident in 2003, Harris has been blind.

As part of a settlement reached, the District has agreed to pay $650,000 to Harris's family. In exchange, Harris's guardian will drop a $10 million lawsuit accusing the state of failing to give him proper care. The District, meanwhile, agreed to dismiss its attempts to collect $2.2 million in medical costs from Harris's guardian. [WASHINGTON POST: PSYCHIATRIC FACILITY MALPRACTICE]
