Uterine Cancer

This is a settlement for the Medical Malpractice lawsuit.

Los Angeles, CA: (Oct-02-07) Johnnie Mae Williams, a 40-year-old woman, brought a medical negligence lawsuit against the Martin Luther King Jr. Drew Medical Center, over the removal of her uterus owing to a diagnostic error. The suit claimed that Williams arrived at MLK-Drew with gynecological complaints in March 2001. MLK personnel performed a minor surgical procedure March 6, 2001, and obtained a tissue specimen from the patient's uterus for pathology examination. The tissue sample was taken to the pathology department, but due to a labeling error, another patient's tissue sample was marked with Williams' name. The pathologist examined the other patient's tissue slides believing that the tissue belonged to Williams and erroneously diagnosed Williams with uterine cancer. Williams underwent an operation on March 19, 2001, in which her uterus was removed. After the surgery, Williams' uterus was examined by the pathology department, and it was determined she did not have cancer. In a settlement reached, County supervisors tentatively agreed on a $250,000 payout to resolve the medical malpractice lawsuit. [DAILY NEWS: CANCER MISDIAGNOSIS]
