Harlan County, NE

Alma, NE: (Aug-08-07) Jan Long, a deputy sheriff and political opponent fired by Sheriff Chris Becker, filed suit against the county, alleging that he was wrongly terminated from his job. Long filed the federal lawsuit in October 2006, claiming that his civil rights were violated when Becker fired him on September 18, 2006. Sources claim that Long was fired during his write-in campaign against Becker for the November election. Long eventually lost the election. In a settlement reached, the Harlan County Board of Supervisors agreed to settle the matter out of court. They consented to pay $17,500 to Long, a 9-year veteran of the force. The county's insurance company will pay the rest of the undisclosed settlement amount. Harlan County officials stated that the settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing.
