LAWSUITS NEWS & LEGAL INFORMATION

New York, NY

New York, NY: (Jun-26-07) A New York family whose 19 children experienced lead poisoning living in subsidized housing filed a lawsuit against the city, alleging that the city failed to inform them about the effects of lead poisoning. Lead poisoning causes learning disabilities, as well as attention and behavioral problems.

In a settlement reached, the city of New York agreed to pay the family $12.75 million. Rachelle Scott, a family member, whose two children, three siblings and 14 nieces and nephews suffered permanent damage from lead poisoning, claimed that reaching a settlement in the case gave the family closure. The settlement, most of which will be paid by the city and landlord Bertram Fields, was the largest lead paint settlement in New York state and was announced as both sides were about to rest at the end of a two-month trial for a Scott family lawsuit.
