Mahopac Marine

Mahopac, NY: (Apr-23-07) Carmel officials filed charges against Mahopac Marine owner Charles Melchner, accusing him of having illegally extended his commercial enterprise into residential sections of the lake. Melchner has being doing business along Lake Mahopac on Route 6N for nearly four decades, and has been embroiled in zoning code violations amid several other controversies over the years. In a settlement reached with a six member jury, Melchner agreed to end a multitude of municipal disputes that first entered Town Court in 1998 and have become the focus of local conversation and election campaigns. Melchner pleaded guilty to violating Carmel zoning code by failing to get site plan approval for a wooden walkway into Lake Mahopac and agreed to pay a $35,000 fine. As part of the agreement, Melchner will be allowed to keep the docks and walkway extending from his office building, but must remove docks in newer parcels that have been the crux of the dispute.
