Dr. Hugh Moncrief

Dayton, OH: (Feb-14-07) Dr. Hugh Moncrief, a neurosurgeon with the Ohio Neurosurgical Institute Inc., was held liable and construed negligent in the death of Terri Shepherd. On complaining of headaches and vomiting, Shepherd was diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage from a ruptured aneurysm, which was successfully treated. On May 23, 2005, Moncrief attempted to drain fluid from Shepherd's brain, using a basic neurology procedure, but improperly placed the catheter and severed a vein in Shepherd's brain. She suffered from massive bleeding and died two days later. Terri Shepherd's family was awarded $1 million in compensatory damages at the end of a six day civil trial.
