Southampton Town, NY: (Feb-07-07) A settlement has been reached today by 29 businesses and government entities with the New York State attorney general's office over the cost of cleanup at the old North Sea landfill in Southampton Town. The defendants included, Corwith's Auto Body , Hampton Jitney, Colossal Carting Co., Kraft Foods Global, MTA, Long Island Rail Road, KeySpan, 7-Eleven Inc., Southampton College of Long Island University, Southampton Town, Southampton Hospital, and the Southampton School District. The landfill had been declared both a state and federal superfund site, and the cost of cleanup work was originally paid by the superfund. The polluters of the site settled with a consent decree. The lawsuit and agreement were filed in US District Court for the Eastern District in Brooklyn. After paying a $1.5 million settlement, the 29 polluters will have no future liability for any additional cleanup at the site. [NEWSDAY: LANDFILL POLLUTION]
