Niles, MI: On August 20, 2002 Dr. David Alan Speers showed up intoxicated for a meeting with a probation officer. He was charged with contempt-of-court and was sent to serve three days in Berrien County Jail. On August 23, Speers was found dead in his cell at 4:30 a.m. His family filed a lawsuit against Berrien County, Sheriff Paul Bailey, 10 sheriff's deputies, and county medical examiner Robert Clark for the alleged torture and subsequent death of Speers.
