New Jersey School Board

Bayonne, NJ: When Christopher Castlegrande was a 15-year-old student he had sexual relations with his guidance counselor Diane Cherchio West. Castlegrand filed a federal suit in 2004 against the Bayonne Board of Education and eight individual current and former school employees, including three superintendents, alleging they failed to protect him from being sexually assaulted by West. She pleaded guilty to aggravated criminal sexual contact and was sentenced to four years probation and ordered to register as a sexual offender. Under terms of the settlement, the school board will pay $80,000 and its insurance carrier, New Jersey School Boards Association Insurance Group, will pick up the balance of $250,000.
