Trenton, NJ: Three whistleblowers came forward in 1999 and federal prosecutors in Philadelphia filed charges against the pharmacy benefit manager for alleged fraud and kickbacks. Medco was accused of paying health insurance plans kickbacks and destroying patient prescriptions. Medco will pay the government $137.5 million and will pay an additional $9.5 million to settle other civil charges. Hidden financial agreements and management pressures can influence which drugs patients receive, the price we all pay for drugs and whether pharmacists serve patients with their undivided professional judgment.
