New York City

This is a settlement for the DUI/DWI lawsuit.

Off duty officer Joseph Gray was on a drinking binge that began in the parking lot of the 72nd Precinct and led to a topless bar. Later that evening, he drove his minivan into a family as they crossed a Brooklyn street. Maria Herrera, her 4-year-old-son, Andy, and her 16-year-old sister, Dilcia Pena were all killed in the accident. Herrera was pregnant; her baby boy was born shortly after the August 2001 accident, but he died within hours. Relatives of a family filed a wrongful death lawsuit and were awarded a $1.5 million settlement from the city. (May-16-06) [ NEWSDAY ]
