New York Police Department

In August of 1997, Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant, was allegedly tortured in a New York Police station bathroom. He was arrested in a brawl outside a Brooklyn nightclub and taken to Brooklyn's 70th precinct where two officers pinned him down and sodomized him with a broken broomstick.

Officer Justin Volpe pleaded guilty and is serving 30 years in prison and Officer Charles Schwarz also pleaded guilty of assault. Four other officers were convicted of lying to authorities about the incident. The City of New York will pay $7.125 million and the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association will pay $1.625 million of the $8.75 million police brutality settlement. (Jul-13-01) [CNN NEWS]
