Toronto, Canada: Health Canada has joined other agencies and experts in warning about the risks associated with hip and knee replacement implant failure. Specifically, the health agency warned about the risks associated with metal-on-metal hip implants. Complaints about hip implant failures have resulted in hip replacement lawsuits, alleging the metal-on-metal hip replacement devices were defective and have a higher rate of failure than traditional hip replacement devices.

Seattle, WA: It has been a month of good news/bad news for the makers of metal-on-metal hip replacement devices. The good news is that a recently released study suggested that there was no increased risk of cancer in patients who received metal-on-metal hip replacement devices. The bad news is that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) plans to hold hearings into the hip implants, to see if the benefits of the hip devices outweigh the risks.

Washington, DC: Any patient with a metal-on-metal hip replacement would have pause to wonder if their prosthetic hip might ever become problematic, if it hasn't already proven to be. Such was the case with a UK patient who underwent a double hip replacement using artificial hips from Biomet, a medical device manufacturer based in Warsaw, Indiana. The patient is considering a Biomet lawsuit.

Washington, DC: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just announced that it is seeking expert scientific and clinical advice on the risks and benefits of metal-on-metal (MoM) hip systems. The agency is also looking to develop potential patient and practitioner recommendations on the use of MoM hip systems and the management of patients implanted with such devices.

A partner in Bernstein Liebhard's mass tort group in New York City, Stern says the firm is currently evaluating lawsuits alleging Wright Conserve hip implants are designed defectively. "We are starting to get calls from Wright Conserve implant patients and we are still in the process of dealing with the ASR and Pinnacle cases. In the past, we have turned away the Wright Conserve implant cases, but we are starting to look at them more seriously," says Stern.

Washington, DC: A recent report from The New York Times (2/21/12) indicates that DePuy Orthopaedics knew well before its hip implant recall was announced that its all-metal devices were failing prematurely. Certain DePuy devices were recalled in 2010 following reports of high hip replacement failure. As The New York Times report shows, however, not only was DePuy likely aware of problems with hip implant failure, the FDA had rejected one of the company's recalled devices because of the high failure rate.

Boston, MA: A new report in the British Medical Journal indicates that all-metal hip implant failures may be just as common as traditional hip replacement failures. Furthermore, the metal-on-metal hip implants may be less safe than traditional hip implants and may have a higher hip revision surgery rate. Hip implant lawsuits have been filed against the maker of some metal-on-metal devices, alleging the devices were negligently designed.
