Clearwire Service Early Termination Fees

Many broadband consumers have recently complained about Clearwire, a company that offers Internet and phone service. Complaints include poor quality of Clearwire's Internet and phone service; difficulty in canceling Clearwire service; monthly fees charged after customers they cancelled their service; and "early termination fees" charged after customers cancelled their service.

Numerous top broadband providers are now including early termination fees in their contracts, with penalties of $200 or higher for consumers. Kirkland, WA-based Clearwire imposes early termination fees ranging from $180 to $220 for customers who drop its wireless broadband service before the end of their contracts.

Early Termination Fees

Individuals report being charged monthly fees and/or "early termination fees" after canceling their service. Such early termination fees were charged even if the cancellation was due to poor Clearwire service. These charges can cause problems for customers, including extra interest and fees on credit cards, or overdrawn bank accounts.

For many customers, selecting a service with an early termination fee may not be saving them any money; in fact it may be costing more than a traditional plan. Consumers Union found that nearly half of all cell phone customers who were considering switching carriers were deterred from doing so by the early termination penalty.

Poor Service

Some consumers claim that they signed up for Clearwire based on the company's representations that it provides reliable Internet and telephone service. However, after signing a one-year or two-year contract, customers complained that Clearwire's service was poor, including complaints that Clearwire's service at times did not work at all.

Cancellation

Individuals also report difficulty in canceling their Clearwire service, including long hold times and Clearwire's failure to cancel service when requested.

Clearwire Lawsuits

Lawyers for consumers across the country are beginning to investigate these types of practices and a number of lawsuits have already been brought against certain companies that charge early termination fees. These lawsuits seek to recover damages for injured consumers and also to force the companies to change their systems so that customers are not charged unlawful early termination fees for unexpectedly poor service.

Immediately after the free 30 day trial I was locked into a 2 year contract after I was told by a clear representative I was paying a month to month service with no contract.

I purchased the Clearwire home modem which doesn't even work right now and the broadband card which I returned after less then a month due to very poor service. I am in the process of cancelling my home internet because it doesn't work at all. Clearwire tech support are unable to resolve any problems.

The salesman never told me of any ETFs that would be imposed, or that I was in a contract for that matter. I knew I would be moving in less than a year and was happy that I could purchase internet service on a "month-to-month" basis. Additionally, the salesman used my father's name since I didn't pass the credit check, and used his address as the location where the service would be used. His address was approx. 5 miles from my home and resulted in poor performance.

I spent 2+ hours on the phone in December 08 trying to work with their tech support. I got nowhere as the tech support guy made me run numerous speed tests and send him reports on such. In the end it wasn't even worth trying to fix it and since I was so busy at work I just lived with it and never got back to them.
