Southern California Metrolink Crash Injures 28

Los Angeles, CA: A devastating rail accident has left 28 people injured, after a commuter train slammed into a parked truck near Oxnard , CA, at around 5:45 am Tuesday, February 24. The incident happed about 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The train slammed into a truck that appears to have been abandoned on the tracks.

The crash caused a massive fireball and sent 3 Metrolink cars carrying commuters tumbling onto their sides. The train was carrying 48 passengers and three crew members. It was heading from Ventura County to Los Angeles. The injured people were taken to several hospitals. Four people are reported to have critical injuries.

The driver of the truck was located nearly seven miles from the scene of the accident and is being questioned as to why he left the truck on the tracks.

According to Metrolink spokesman Scott Johnson, the train typically would be accelerating out of the Oxnard station at about 55 mph. With braking, he estimated the train would have hit the truck at between 40 mph and 55 mph. Johnson said initial reports from the scene indicated the arms and lights were working.
