Implanted Stents

Stents, which are permanent devices that are placed in the artery to keep the inner wall of the artery open, have been linked to dangerous allergic reactions, according to the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

A study recently conducted by the Northwestern Memorial Hospital found 17 cases of allergic reactions from 5,783 reports, four of which resulted in death and were "most likely caused by the stent."

The authors of the report advise that doctors and patients to watch for the following symptoms associated with allergic reactions: rash, difficulty breathing, hives, itching, and fever.

It has yet to be determined exactly what has caused these reactions, but researchers believe that the polymer coatings used on the stents may be at fault.

Stents in the News

Oct-19-06: Propping open clogged arteries with little mesh tubes called stents is more likely to cause strokes than the old-fashioned method of simply cleaning out the arteries surgically. A study at Sainte-Anne Hospitals in Paris found that after one month, 9.6% of 247 stent recipients had died or suffered a stroke, against 3.9% of 257 who received the surgery, known as endarterectomy. Of the strokes in the stent group, 71% took place on the day of the procedure compared to 33% in the surgery group. [REUTERS: STENTS]
