Osceola Farms Co.

Approximately 1,000 former sugar cane cutters, who worked between 1987 and 1992, filed a class action lawsuit against the nation's largest sugar producer seeking to recover more than $5 million in back wages. The lawsuit claims Osceola underpaid contract workers and falsified hours. "Federal law guarantees that agriculture employees earn a fixed rate per hour regardless of how much cane is cut and that employers must make up any shortfall between that rate and the worker's piece-rate earnings," however these workers were paid on a piece rate basis.
