FDA Issues Data Hacking Alert for Hospira's LifeCare PCA 3 and PCA5 Pumps


Washington, DC: The federal government is warning health care facilities about the risk for data hacking of Hospira's Symbiq medication infusion pump. According to an article by CNBC.com, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said caregivers and hospitals should stop using a product because of a cybersecurity risk.

The FDA has stated that the Hospira pumps could be accessed remotely via a hospital' network. The agency added that to date, it has not heard of any such incidents.

Both the FDA and the Homeland Security Department's Industrial Control Systems-Cyber Emergency Response Team have issued warnings about potential for hacking of Hospira's LifeCare PCA 3 and PCA5 pumps, specifically, that they could be hacked and remotely controlled with the possibility that the hacker could change the medications.

Hospira has said that its newer products have additional protection against potential breaches.It stopped making Symbiq pumps in 2013 and expects that most of them would be replaced within two to three years. The FDA has said third parties still sell Symbiq pumps.
