Toshiba DLP Television Defect

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Toshiba America Consumer Products alleging that the bulbs in Toshiba's DLP Televisions burn out prematurely. The complaint alleges that Toshiba represented to consumers, in advertisements, marketing materials, warranties and product guides, that the bulbs in the Televisions have a useful service life of between 6,000 and 8,000 hours, when, in reality, Toshiba is aware that the bulbs burn out and cease functioning after far fewer hours. And, the complaint alleges, consumers relied upon these advertisements and marketing materials in purchasing the Toshiba televisions. The class action is filed in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

Toshiba DLP Television Lamps: Always Carry a Spare
Oh, for the days when you could just take your new TV out of the box, plug it in and expect years of trouble-free, worry-free service. Sadly, that has not been the case for hundreds, if not thousands of owners of Toshiba high-definition televisions, with defective lamps that appear to take the industry back to the old tube days.

I bought the set in 2005 at a cost of 2800 USD. I have spent $1000 dollars to maintain it and now it is not functioning again. I have replaced the bulb 3 times. I have replaced the ballast and now I think the light engine is out.

The television is just over 2 yrs old and this is the second time the bulb has been replaced. We work a lot and do not watch TV that many hours. I called Toshiba and was told that it was a misprint in the manual, but they thought the bulb should last at least 3 yrs.

Before the one year warranty was up, our bulb blew. We paid to replace it, and that bulb lasted until the unit was 13 months old. The TV sat for months before we found out Toshiba was offering a one bulb replacement in the first year. Since we had paid for our first replacement, Toshiba sent us another bulb. We replaced the second bulb with the bulb from Toshiba, and the TV worked for a short time. Then the TV started shutting off during use, and rebooting. In March of this year, we took the TV to an "Authorized Toshiba Service Representative" to have the TV diagnosed and repaired. They claimed the Light Engine was bad, and needed to be replaced. Even though there was a $600.00 charge for a new Light Engine, we decided to have the set fixed, due to the overall cost of the TV. For almost four months we were told that this company could not get this part from Toshiba. It was on "Back Order". After four months, this company called and said they had found another supplier of the Light Engine part, and would order it through them. Two more months later, this company called us to inform us that the replacement part also did not work. They told us they did not know what else they could do for us. So now we are stuck with a $2500.00 TV that has not worked for well over a year.

3 year old DLP HDTV. Have replaced lamp 3 times within first year. Light engine started making noises 2 months before warranty ended. Light engine recently has gone out. Estimated repair will cost more than TV was worth brand new.

It was conveyed by local store which sold me the unit as well as in Toshiba documentation that the bulbs should last 2 - 3 times longer than they actually have in reality. Now other electronic components are failing which is causing me great yearly expense and long delays in receiving repairs.
(You'd think I would have learned after having problems with previous Toshiba Rear Projection TV which went bad after 6 years and parts were unavailable to repair!)

Have had the $2300 TV 2 years now, and am ordering my fifth replacement lamp. The 1st one blew after 2 months, and was replaced under warranty. The next one lasted less than 6 months, but Toshiba refused to replace it, because original warranty had expired. New lamps seem to last just over 6 months before blowing out, at a cost of $200 to $450.

After about 4 months of rarely watching this TV I heard a loud pop and my picture went blank. I called Toshiba and they said the bulb went bad and I had to send in the old one to get a new one under my original warranty. This took over a week and I still had to pay for my expensive Comcast HDTV cable. I have an extended warranty that just expired and I am concerned that my lamp will go out any time and I will be out $250.

Purchased television in Dec 2005; had over 6 calls to Customer Service regarding a "pink" screen that never was resolved. The unit has had two replaced lamps, replaced module speaker and replaced board by October of 2006. The Television has now suffered complete failure and Toshiba will not assist because it is out of warranty.

I paid over $2,500.00 for this TV 30 months ago. If I go ahead with all the repairs its going to have cost me an additional $1,600.00 just to keep the thing running. I never imagined it would cost me 65% of the purchase price in repairs after 2.5 years. 3 bulbs=$600.00 and one light engine/color wheel=$1,000.00.

Spent $3,000 for TV in Dec. 2005. Purchased extended warranty. Original lamp burned out Sept. 2006 & replaced free of charge by Toshiba.
Next lamp burned July 07 & replaced free by Toshiba. We were told this is your last free replacement but these bulbs are better. Now it's Feb. 2008 and the lamp is going again. Will cost $200 plus tax to replace. Extended warranty does not cover lamps. New lamps are only warrantied for 6 months by supplier.

I called Toshiba to see if they would replace the light engine if I paid for the labor. They refused and would not give me the address or name of the CEO of Toshiba. This is a defective product that consumers are unaware of.

After owning the TV for less than 6 months we went without a TV for 2 weeks the first time under warranty. Now less than a year later we have to pay $200 for a new bulb. Along with the fact it happened during the holidays in the middle of me traveling for three months so my wife had to watch our 13" TV while I was on the road.

I recently had to pay $219.00 for a bulb that has burnt out 3 times since the puchase (2x were under warranty). The TV was puchased 8/27/2006.

We have been unable to use this TV for over 6 weeks while we wait for parts. The service contract we have utilizes Charter TV repair, but they will not carry the part on their truck, they insist they have to make sure what is wrong with the set before ordering any parts even though, from the symptoms described to them they know what the problem is. We pay the cable bill but are unable to utilize cable TV programing when our TV doesn't work. It went out before Christmas of 2007 on December 22, 2007 and this is January 6, 2008 and still no replacement part. This TV gets about 20 hrs a week use, if that. This TV is not very dependable and we paid over $2500 for it.
