Class action status is being sought in a lawsuit filed against the Berkeley Unified School District on behalf of minority students who alleged that they were illegally expelled from school for racially motivated reasons. The suit claims that the district expelled the students, who were black and Latino, "because of their race, ancestry, or national origin," and also claims that this was done without the expulsion hearing mandated by state law.
