140,000 Ford Escapes Recalled due to Potential Engire Fire Hazard

- by

Detroit, MI: Ford Motor Company has issued a safety recall of nearly 140,000 Ford Escape vehicles from model year 2013 due to the potential for engine fire. Affected vehicles were built between October 5, 2011 and June 2, 2013.

The current recall involves two subsets of the 2013 MY-Escape with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine. The first is based on a July 2012 recall due to a fuel line split in the 2013-MY Escape with the 1.6-liter engine. Some technicians may have installed the fuel line improperly, causing the line to chafe over a period of time and leak fuel, says Kelli Felker, Safety Communications Manager at Ford. 9,469 Escapes are being re-recalled.

The larger recall involves 139,917 model year 2013 MY-Escape with the 1.6-liter engine. This has a potential for localized overheating of the engine cylinder head. The head could crack, which would leak oil, which could cause a fire. Twelve fires have been reported.

The affected cars will warn drivers of the potential problem with alerts saying 'Engine Power Reduced to Lower Temps' or 'Engine over temp, stop safely.' The instrument clusters may chime and illuminate a red light.

We had my 2014 Escape declared complete loss today. We put about $1500 worth of work into it in Aug. of 2018 for overheating issues. And then a in Nov 2019 we put another $2500 of work into the car for overheating, heat not working and other issues. Today my husband was driving to work he was about 3 miles from home on a local road smelled something rubbery and the car was driving funny he thought maybe a break was sticking. He had to drive about a block to find somewhere to safely pull over as he was getting there the entire dashboard lit up with warning lights and a message came up that said Engine Failure. He got out the car went to pop the hood it was too hot to touch and he smelled smoke. With that he ran away from the car and called 911 in less than two minutes it was in complete flames. This car is dangerous and little had been done to notify us of hte recall. A Ford Dealer has called us every other month for the last year to try and get us to trade in for a new Ford Escape but never mentioned a recall.

2017 Ford escape.
Car was taken in to Ford because it lost all power while driving and took 1 month to get my car back...2 weeks later the engine light was back on and gas mileage was horrible. Took the car back to Ford and 4 days later I got it back... didn't even have it 24hrs and it started to smell like burning rubber inside and the auto stop/start was making me put my car in park and restart the car. The Ford escape is VERY unsafe and Ford is doing nothing about it. I will gladly start a class action lawsuit!!!

I have a 2018 Escape purchased April 2018. It went into the shop with nearly identical timing as yours. For same problem. Now I have many more issues - my car has been in the shop since 8/2019. I’m trying to find more of us!

Can you email me at Iomay.caban@gmail.com ???

This car is unsafe to drive and ford won’t buy it back.

I hope you get this!

I had the same problem with leaking coolant with about 89,000 miles. I purchased it at a ford dealer. also purchased an extended warranty which did not repair the motor kept getting the run around Wasted money on the warranty. I lost in excess of $10,000 on this piece of crap. still waiting for the for the refund of the warranty. I had to purchase a different car from the same dealer loosing about $10,000. Is there a Class action suit against Ford for the 1.6 Ecoboost Who do I contact about this? any one know it was a 2013

I bought my 2018 Ford Escape in April of 2018. At 20,000 the engine light came on, took it to Ford and I had a blown head gasket but, before I took it in I had the oil changed and I only had a half of a quart of oil in my car. Where did the oil go? Nobody can tell me. Long story short they fixed the blown head gasket and now my car makes a very loud ticking noise and does not drive the same. I took it back to ford and they kept it for a week and said nothing was wrong. Now I smell something that smells like it is burning or melting on my car. I will be filing a class action lawsuit because I am not going to pay this much money for a car for it to be breaking down as such low mileage and so new.

I own a Ford Escape 2013 and participated in the recall back in 2014. Since then I’ve had overheating issues and eventually had to have my water pump replaced. Just recently 2019 I started to see smoke coming from the passenger side of the car and could smell oil burning. I took it to my trusted ford dealer and they verified that I have an oil leak coming from the cylinder head which required a tear down of the engine to put in a new head gasket. Now I know gaskets like this don’t just go bad at 58,000 miles. I believe the oil leak and gasket problem is more than just wear and tear. It engine block or cylinder head is probably bad from the initial recall and later bad water pump. The ford dealer didn’t help - 1,000 if I want to have it repaired

My 2014 Ford escape with the 1.6 liter engine caught on fire and was total 6 miles from my home while driving on the interstate. Had less than 1 minute to exit car before smoke filled cabin of car. Car had 70,00 miles on engine and car. Tried to have problem fixed as a recall but parts delivered to Fredom Ford in Morgantown, wv were defective and reordered. They told my son that car was safe to drive and He left and returned home. I drove the car 5 days later and thank God it was me driving and not my Wife or my Son with his 2 year old daughter. There would not have been time to get her out. Think about that Ford !

Just had my 2014 Ford Escape catch fire while sitting at a red light. Been fighting with my insurance company and Ford in attempts to find out the route cause of the fire. Had to pay out of my own pocket for and independent fire investigator

I have been experiencing issues for some time with my Ford Escape and leaking engine coolant. I have a 2013 1.6L turbo boost engine. I've had it to the Ford Dealership on more than one occasion and of course, they haven't been able to find anything until now. My Escape won't hold any coolant at all! I poured coolant in and it all went straight to the ground. I had it towed to Ford and they are telling me I need a new water pump and that my bill would be over $1000! After doing some research, this appears to be the 5th most commonly searched issue and Ford is saying there isn't a recall problem. I'd say otherwise.

My 2013 Ford Escape, has electrical problems. Battery goes dead every 2 to 3 mos. As soon as I got it I went to the drive-in. The radio kept shutting off & telling me that it had a low battery. Then I figured out that the coolant box was broke, it was overheating. So I got it replaced. Then December 13th or so my car slowed down to a stop. To make a story short. It was really still overheating. I kept losing coolant, I thought it was about a rubber piece missing. I found out the SOLENOID SWITCHES are faulty on these cars. Leaks down your engine, eats & rots your hoses, ,gaskets, etc. Then it runs down knocks out a PISTON in your already FAULTY TRANSMISSION, then your transmission goes out. Then there was another recall on the Fuel lines on Jan. 23, 2018..

I have been having multiple issues with my 2013 Ford Escape SEL 1.6L ecoboost. Most of my issues have been with coolant leaking and causing my car to break down in the middle of busy intersections and on freeways. my car is currently back in the shop. this happens every 3-5 months.

I have contacted ford over and over again with not one returned phone call about my 2013 ford escape. i have had to repeatedly fill the coolant in my car at lease 2x a week. There are recalls for that but they said not on my car. i have a gas leak that may ignite the engine. no recall for that either on my car. i have over 3000.00 of work that needs to be done on my car. this is not normal wear and tear. i have maintain my since purchased. called the CEO 3x left messages.

I own a 2013 Ford Escape 1.6 liter EcoBoost. I have had all of the recalls but now the Ford dealer in Yukon, OK has told me that my engine has compression problems and needs to be replaced. The engine has 165,000 miles on it but those are highway miles as I use this vehicle for work.

I have been very supportive of Ford but this will be my last one. My warranty has expired but I believe that I have a defective engine which Ford should replace. The dealership quoted $5,800 to replace the engine and the best quote is $4,000. It is ridiculous that the engine failed with so few miles.

I called Ford and explained the situation and they dismissed me and said that it was my problem.

I want to know if there is a class action suit which I can join or if one is being formed. The value of this auto has dropped drastically and I cannot afford to absorb the cost if a new engine when I believe that Ford should replace this defective product.

I am a senior citizen, honorably discharged Vietnam Era disabled veteran. I need to find someone who will advocate for me against this giant corporation.

My family and i purchased a 2013 ford escape sel from anderson ford in anderson south carolina in july 2013. few months past the vehicle started having issues, as of the smell of oil burning losing power. everytime we would go to take it to the dealership it would be fine. in march of 2014 the burned from oil leaking onto the engine. same day we got the recall notice. my insurance took care of the most part then the little the gap insurance covered. and i was still stuck with the money i lost along with the vehicle i traded in plus them money i had to pay after the insurance company i paid. with two kids and a wife its hard to come up with the money for another down payment plus pay off the old loan. best part is ford didn't even bother to help.
