Kugel Mesh Patients Have Much to Worry About

. By
Tacoma, WAIf you had the Kugel Mesh patch implanted during your hernia surgery, there is a chance that you feel the cure was far worse than the disease, so to speak. That is because some patients have experienced problems with their Kugel Mesh hernia patch, problems that cause serious, life-threatening conditions.

Kugel Mesh VictimWhen you were told that you had to have a hernia repair surgery, you probably agreed to it, thinking that no matter what happened, it couldn't be worse than the pain you were already experiencing. What you didn't know was that when your hernia repair patch failed—because of an alleged problem with the memory recoil ring component—what you would experience would be far worse than anything you had ever gone through before.

Of course you wonder how any device that doctors deem to be good for you could ever cause that much harm. But it can. Some people say that the mesh in their patch adhered to their organs. Think about it—mesh actually stuck to your internal tissues. That certainly can't be good for you, and it would take a lot of surgery—and possible the loss of portions of your digestive system—to get rid of the mesh.

Frank P (not his real name) says that his mesh attached to part of his bowel and he underwent surgery to remove the "gooey" matter that formed as a result. He also suffered a severe infection. "Now, my abdomen protrudes through the loose muscle," Frank says. Frank reports he suffered sepsis as a result of the patch used in his surgery and now has very little energy. It also took months of procedures before the site of the infection was healed.

As if all that isn't enough, you have to worry about internal fistulae—when an abnormal connection develops between organs that do not usually connect. Finally, you have to worry about bowel perforations, which occur when a hole develops in your bowel. This allows the contents of the bowel to flow into your abdominal cavity, leading to a variety of problems, including peritontis.

None of this takes into account the intense pain that you suffer, nor the concern that despite all this trouble, the hernia itself is still most likely not fixed. At the very least, it could easily recur. So, you have endured months—if not years—of pain, repeated surgeries and various health problems and your hernia, the issue that was supposed to be resolved, is still an issue. No wonder so many patients say that if they had known about all this, they wouldn't have had the surgery to begin with.

If you were lucky, the problem with your patch was discovered quickly and the issue resolved with very little difficulty. However, for many patients it took a while for doctors to discover what was going on, so the patients suffered and the situation got worse and worse. Some patients will never fully recover from their ordeals. They are stuck forever with abdominal problems and health issues. Some discovered too late what was wrong—they died, allegedly from complications caused by the patch.

Of course, you could be in the group of people who has a Kugel Mesh patch implanted but hasn't yet had any problems, so the mesh stays implanted. You are likely holding your breath, wondering if something will go wrong, or if it already has but you haven't noticed it yet. You can be forgiven for worrying about what could potentially happen to you if the patch stays in—of course the prospect of another surgery to take the patch out is not ideal, either. So, you are stuck in a dilemma: leave the patch in and hope nothing goes wrong or undergo another surgery that could be unnecessary.

No matter which group you are in—the group that has already suffered harm or the group that has not—this has undoubtedly had an impact on your life. It might be time to investigate whether or not you can be compensated for what you have gone through.

On October 31, 2006 I had a ventral hernia repair. At that time I had a fascial reapproximation with lateral relaxing incision and a 12 x 12 inch piece of vicryl mesh placed as an overlay. I had complication with this surgery involving a seroma and a wound infection. The surgeon had stated that the vicryl mesh would dissolve. Needless to say I spent a year on a wound vac and a year later surgery discovered acute and chronic inflammation with hemorrhage and necrosis. In 2012 I was in the hospital with sepsis. In January 2014 I was hospitalized with sepsis, kidney failure, and acute bronchitis. I was in the hospital for a week and when I was discharged I was very weak. I was discharged on a Friday and my abdomen was sore. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance the next day (Saturday) and underwent emergency surgery. The surgeon told my family it was very serious and it was possibly I would not make it. My abdomen was filled with dead tissue. An internal fistulae—(when an abnormal connection develops between organs that do not usually connect). The surgeon discovered that I had a bowel perforations caused by the vicryl mesh. The contents of the bowel flowed into my abdominal cavity, leading to a variety of problems, including peritonitis. I have an open wound on my abdomen 22 cm wide by 18 cm.
I was in the hospital for approximately a month and then sent to a nursing home. I had other numerous admissions to the hospital and I am looking at additional surgery in July as soon as my abdominal wound heals.
Was the vicryl mesh ever recalled?

Since 2005 I had inguinal surgery and the surgeon had told me that there is a new mesh that had came out that I would never have a problem again. So, yea I agreed to this because I had already had two surgery where the regular mesh failed. I cannot describe all the pain I have endured. I can say this, I have never thought a person could endure this pain for so long. The last surgeon I seen said that it was normal for me to have pain there forever. Boy was he wrong. It takes all I got just to move anymore. I can't enjoy lifes normal happiness. The pain in my abdomen, legs, and testicles never go away. I can't take this anymore. Its got to go. I have a 5 year old son that I can't keep up with and I used to be field and track guru. For now I just pray to live long enough to see my son have kids. Thanks for reading this epidemic of mine.
