Cipro a Strong Antibiotic with a Nasty Dark Side

. By
Washington, DCThe list of Cipro side effects for the Cipro antibiotic prompted the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ask for a black box warning for Cipro. Even so, while useful at treating a variety of hard-to-treat infections, the Cipro drug has been found to be more problematic than helpful for a lot of people.

Cipro Side EffectsCipro, or ciprofloxacin, belongs to the quinolone family of drugs and is pressed into service to treat a wide variety of infections of the lung, urinary tract, skin, bones and joints.

However, side effects can be nasty and range from restlessness and insomnia to lightheadedness and even tendon rupture. The drug affects the liver and could even allow caffeine and theophylline to build up to toxic levels within the body.

Cipro patients have lots to say about this drug. Carole writes, "This a dangerous medication and only used in emergency. There are lawsuits on it for ruptures of tendons; usually starts in feet and legs but can injure any tendons. It can cause your liver to shut down. Take with care. Any side effects should be reported. This medicine made me very sick…"

Another Cipro patient holds similar views: "This medication is terrible. Within a day and a half (3 doses of 500 mg) I broke out in terrible hives. Huge painful itching welts all over my body. Everywhere from behind my knees, under my arms, my back, thighs, neck, scalp, I am completely covered. This is day 2 after stopping the Cipro and I am in even worse pain.

"The welts are hot to the touch and feel like a sunburn. They just started itching again and I am about to lose my mind. They didn't warn me of any side effects before giving this to me. I have never been allergic to any medication before. I am miserable and will never let anyone in my family take this medication! Benadryl sort of helped and allows me to sleep at night, but I have children to care for during the day and am stuck in misery."

Another unhappy Cipro customer writes, "Just before she was released from the hospital, my 90 year old mother was given Cipro when a catheter resulted in a urinary tract infection. Within days she developed a rash, which quickly turned into Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Her entire body was "blood red" and she was returned to the hospital and placed in the burn unit. Over the next month her skin flaked and peeled. Her eyes were affected and she could no longer watch TV, read the paper, etc.

"She was originally in the hospital for colon cancer."

And then there's Marie, who says: "My mom was given Cipro for a urinary tract infection. It ended up not being a urinary tract infection but gallbladder problems while in the hospital she was given more Cipro. Her gallbladder was removed and she was still taking Cipro. To make the story short she developed C-Difficile a bacteria infection caused by the Cipro killing all her good microorganism and bad."

Tendon rupture is another side effect of Cipro, an issue that served as the catalyst for the black box warning that was mandated by the FDA for Cipro in July of last year. Public Citizen, the consumer advocacy group that is always up for a good fight when patient safety is at issue, lobbied strongly for the black box warning in an effort to protect patients from the nasty side of a drug still available on the market.

As the safety pendulum swings from benefit to risk, the black box warning is the strongest weapon in the FDA's artillery save from removing a product from the market altogether.

The key therefore is to be aware of these various known side effects, and be prepared for them just in case they come to roost on you. You may wish to have the number of a Cipro drug lawyer close by if you have been harmed, or affected negatively in any way from Cipro side effects from the Cipro antibiotic. Many of the side effects noted above have caused patients to lose time off work, which can affect an individual's job and finances.

If you have been adversely affected by Cipro and you were not aware of the risks, you should speak to a Cipro attorney to look into compensation.

I got this cipro multiple times fof a returning prostatitis. Whwn my tolerance was met, I literally broke down. Swver heart arhytmia for almost a year, central nervous system went awire. Terrible pains from hell, all cartilage melted. This medicine should be banned. If you are reading this and was just hit, start taking high doses magnesium right away to -hopefully- reverse some of the damage. I am 2 years 'out' and I am NOT doing well. This is crime if yhe highest order.

I was given ciprofloxacin for treatment on diverticulitis. Within days I experienced hip joint pain when moving the wrong way . Shoulder pain , muscle pain and hand pain were experienced also. Also had tenderness along my spine and ribs. Many episodes of a racing heart beat .
On the second bout of diverticulitis 4 months later , I was given ciprofloxacin again pill form . Within 8 hrs of taking it my right shoulder and right hip felt like they were tearing away from my body . That pain woke me up in the middle of the night and kept me up all night. I contacted my primary doctor and she immediately changed my antibiotic. The pains stayed for days along with strange leg muscle numbness and accompanied with terrible muscle “ burning pain “ when walking. I hope folks are made VERY aware of these side effects so that they know it’s the drug causing these things to occur.

I simply hate cipro. I avoid having to take it but a week ago I had the flu and severe chest infection with phlegm. I had no choice but to take it.

Needless to say, depression, lightheaded, weak, 24 hours in bed for days, nausea, vomiting...thought I was going to die...seriously I was like a zombie....but yesterday was the last cipro...my road to recovery is slow...

I have had lingering UTI / Prostatitis possible for about 18 months.

The original clinic scripted me Cypro but quickly pushed it aside for Bactrim once it showed up as R. After couple of days on Bactrim went on to Keflex after seeing a CDC doc. Used that on an off along with it family ceflexin up until a month ago. Went back to the URO doc with terrible burning he meded me with Ciprofloxin and it pointed out it was R on my Health record. Thought it was strange they take it until they get the urine result back. Any way within 4 pills I was out cednifir. Amen I have had the best 18 days of living in 20 months. I ran out he didn't want to give me refills, think he is trying to get me into surgery. I have had 13 surgeries, including a whipple, a hematoma two days after surgery open up and do it again, then 13 months later a desmoid tumor extraction, I have no gallbladder, no appendix, no tonsils, each knee has had one surgery, hernia last Dec, broken leg, broke arm, 2 colonoscopy with issues, biopsy for pancreatic NET thus the whipple, oh yes and green light laser for BPH. I suspect the URO would like to operate that's not happening. Enough is enough. Today after the 5 th cipro pill was the limit I feel terrible like bad flu case though no fever. So avoid cipro at all cost

Stay away from Cipro! My 17 year old daughter was prescribed this medicine for her first UTI. After taking 2 doses she became extremely sick and could not stop vomiting. She was rushed to the ER and they admitted her into the hospital. 24 hours later her body was still fighting the effects of 2 pills! Dont take this medicine! If your doctor prescribes it ask for something else! Cipro is poison!!!!!!!!!!!

I just want to tell anyone who is told to take this medication, be ready for a hell of a ride, I got so sick I thought I was going crazy, this is clearly poisoning me, to the point where I can't even watch a bruins game or sleep at night, I wish they would at least tell anyone that is about to take this shit, that have just been given them a bottle of poisoning shit,so after taking it get ready for a trip to the emergency room for pain medication to say the least,as it is I have been paralyzed for 3o years, and now having to deal with this is clearly worse than my paralysis it self, than to top it off they look at me as if I am looking to get high or something, I wish for just one day they could feel the real meaning of the word, I don't even like drugs, but ever since I started getting UTI infections the pain has only gotten worse from the antibiotics, but this one is the worse, I hope this helps someone,if they read this, God bless you all, Mark botelho.

GP Doctor gave me ciproxin injection, right after the injection my body started itching. Now it's even worse. Doctor didn't warned me before.
I already faced this problem 2 months back. Now he still gave me without informing before. I'm cant bare this now.
I need to go to my job. I can't sit at home 1 week. I may loose my job.
Should I admit in big hospitals or should I wait for the result.

I took cipro for the first time last Saturday after getting out of the ER. I had a horrible case of food poisoning. I took one tablet and 30 mins later the room started to spin. I got horrible vertigo. I probably would have thrown up, but with all the anti nasua medicine I had been taking I didnt. It lasted for hours. I called the ER back and they told me to not take anymore. 4 days later and if I move to fast I still get vertigo. I am still pretty weak too. My body also feels tingly all over. I have never felt any of these symptoms before. I am sure it was the cipro. I understand all medications do different things to people, but I would not recommend taking it and ask for an alternative.

I was taking 2 500 mg of ciprofloxacin for 10 day for a kidney infection and it was horrible. I got the worse yeast infection I have ever had, the skin around my labia completely shed off causing lesions in "that area" and a lot of general discomfort including body aches and blood in my urine that wasnt there before. I have now been off of them for a week and the skin is growing back but I still have all the body aches and more appointments to figure out why the blood is suddenly there. I do not recomend cipro.

I have been taking cipro 500 mg twice a day this is the third day. I have been itching all over, and have edema forming in legs and abdominal area. Even with the very severe UTI, I did not have edema until I started this medicine. I also am dizzy upon arising, and have balance issues while walking. You may respond to my email, if responding. This is a very evil medicine.

I was given Cipro for my diverticulitis and was told that it is the best thing for it. I was experiencing nausea, head fogginess, headaches, joint pain making it hard to walk the first three days. I thought, I can deal with this to get better. My fourth day got really interesting. The new side effects that night were: tingling throughout my body, very moody, restlessness especially in my legs, legs feeling like jelly whenever I walked, having to take deep breaths, heart racing, constant nausea making it hard to drink at all or take meds also a trembling feeling inside my body along with Anxiety and Insomnia. Oh, and hallucinations! I was freaking out and told my husband while in tears that I cannot continue this medicine. It's like a poison!! I sometimes wonder if Doctors themselves take this crap.

I am on Cipro for a UTI, this stuff is brutal it has made me feel so sick, like flu symptoms. I feel achey, fatigued, anxiety, heart races, really depressed suddenly. sweating really bad when I sleep. I dreaded taking it this morning knowing it would make me feel worse. I have a day and half more. Think I'm going to pass. I've missed a week of work cause I cannot function on the Cipro.

I took cipro for a blocked gland in my vagina which caused a mass to appear. It was either take Cipro or have them cut the inside of my vagina in the vaginal canal to rid the blockage. It worked very well and got rid of the mass in about three days. Taking one 500 mg twice a day so about six pills got rid of a mass that would have had to be drained for about a week and then heal for about three weeks. Because I'm a waitress ,this would have never worked for me, to be out of work for three weeks. The doctor told me to not take anymore of the Cipro since the mass was gone. So I only used what I needed. I cannot report any of those side effects while taking the meds.

Took Cipro for only two days and experienced itching and swelling that drove me to the ER twice. Two weeks later, although the symptoms are getting better, I'm still having bouts of blotchy skin and itching. I feel like my immune system is messed up. Doctor's tell me it can take some time to get back to normal. Two weeks seems like a long time and I get the feeling the doctors really don't have an answer for me.

I am now relieved seeing that I am not the only with the "pregnancy" symptoms.

I struggled to sleep for the past 2 nights and nausea was the bell of the ball in those 2 nights.
I even resorted to a pregnancy test because my breast also feel very tender, I am bloated and feeling very sick.

I'm 4 days on this stuff now and sick bruising has began, and vomiting and more I'm sick as scxxx right now , I should have checked this site out first

Yeah, this stuff seems pretty intense. My dog has a UTI and within two hours of her taking it, she was getting big red welts on her body, legs, and on her face around her eyes.

She has never had a reaction to anything, so having such severe side effects so quick really caught me off guard. Human or animal, I would use this stuff with extreme caution.

Cipro is very dangerous and should be banned-gave me C-Diff and put me in the hospital and I'm still screwed up. Martin is probably a shill for Big Pharma...you know they put those people out there....if not wait 'til he gets deathly ill then see what he has to say....

Recently prescribed Ciprofloxacin by doctor for UTI problem. They were 250mg tablets. Twelve hours or so after taking the 1st tablet became "super dizzy" and nauseous. As prescribed I took another and became dizzier and started to vomit over and over. It was an ugly ordeal. Stay away from this stuff…it should be banned for its terrible side effects. I never had any allergic reactions to any antibiotics ever…until this one. It is the motherlode of toxicity. BEWARE!!! Check all your medications and prescriptions out before taking them…if you have some older folks in your family do it for them if you don't they might inadvertently kill them.

I don't have any infections. But my friend was looking up pills that they had received earlier that day. They looked it up and were reading it. Disgusted with the results of reading it and obviously any man would be too. So as a female I read what it was used for. It was pretty intense. Then I thought bout it. I said if u think bout it, its a cleanser for women and I should take one, though I didn't have n e infections for what it is originally used for. I took the pill thinking it will surely cleanse my system. I hopped in shower. N sure enough , an hour and half later. I started cramping. I felt nauseated, weak, shaky. Embarrassed, I told my guy friend I wasnt feeling good. Basically, it made me constipated, yet have diarrhea, dizzy, weak, shaky, can't walk, its been almost 24hours since I took it. I still feel like show shit. So I learned a lesson. DONT TAKE ANYTHING UNLESS U KNOW WHAT SIDE EFFECTS ARE!!! I can't walk, every time I wake up and my alertness comes around I deep sick again. I have been sleeping almost whole time. Nothing helps. Took so pepto tablets. They are helping. I regret this. I wanna die. This is sucky feeling.don't take this pill unless your supposed to.

Martin. Yeah right. You have tendons rupture, and get on disability like myself... Cipro disables some people, and for that reason- people SHOULD be held responsible for serious complications from Cipro and other medications. How old are you? Obviously young, and not having ever faced serious troubles in your life. You need to learn COMPASSION, young man.

Posted by

on
I agree with Martin. Every drug has a laundry list of side effects. You except those effects when you go to the doctor or when you pick up the prescription. If you blindly take a medication, then you deserve what happens to you. People should weigh the two possible outcomes: develping some mild-moderate side effect or dying when they become septic.

Keep taking your Cipro like a good sheep, Martin! Make sure you fill out your disability papers and get yourself a wheelchair beforehand! You'll be needing it.

EVERY medication has stuff like this happen to some people. BAN ALL MEDICATIONS! SUE EVERYONE!
