Avandia – I Survived a Widow Maker
San Diego, CA: Phil had been taking Avandia for about five years, and during that time he had developed worsening shortness of breath and swelling of the lower legs. His doctor had him do two stress tests over a period of about three years, both of which he passed with flying colors. Then, on June 26, 2008, Phil had a massive heart attack.
"I seemed to grow shorter and shorter of breath through the time period I was on Avandia," Phil said. "I also had major swelling of my lower legs and ankles for the last couple of months. My doctors and I were working to get rid of it but we couldn't. Then last Thursday, close to one in the afternoon, a freight train mowed me down.
Literally, it hit me full blast. I went into full cardiac arrest. And I was alone, working at home. I grabbed an aspirin, and ran outside to yell at my tenant who lives in the upstairs apartment. She came running out, said ‘oh my God,’ grabbed her keys, and off we went. The rest is pain. That was absolutely the most awful pain I've ever gone through in my life."
When Phil arrived at the hospital he was rushed into emergency surgery where a team of surgeons unclogged an artery that was 100 percent blocked and put in a stent. Prior to Avandia, Phil showed none of the warning signs typically associated with heart trouble. But just before his heart attack, Phil's doctors became alarmed. "My endocrinologist saw me just a few weeks ago and she flipped," said Phil. "She said we have to find out what's going on. And before we could do anything--I had a heart attack."
Phil considers Avandia the source of his problems. “From what I've read in the last couple of days it seems that the symptoms of shortness of breath and swelling of the extremities are hallmark symptoms associated with the drug. The shortness of breath I experienced became worse every day until it got to the point were getting about the house was problematic. I would have to sit down and catch my breath."
Now that his artery is closed, Phil hopes he can return to his old self. “I feel much better now than I did before the heart attack,” he said. But he knows that a full recovery is unlikely and life after a heart attack will never be the same.
