Avandia Leaves Mother Fearing for the Well-Being of her Children
Brentwood, NY: When Avandia was prescribed for Kanise, who had diabetes, she had no idea it would so adversely affect her heart and her ability to work. Worse yet, the mother of a three and a four-year-old worries constantly about what will happen to her children if she becomes permanently incapacitated or dies.
Kanise was pregnant with her now-four-year old when she was diagnosed with diabetes but thankfully didn't start taking Avandia until after her son's birth. Nothing happened right away, but in less than a year, the problems started.
"Maybe six-to-seven months after starting Avandia, I started having heart problems. I never had any before," she said. The now 37-year old nurse had gone to the doctor with bad headaches and ultimately was diagnosed with high blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia and high cholesterol.
"I was very surprised because, for one, I had never had any problems before and two, I just had a baby," she said, adding there was no family history of cardiac issues.
She takes two medications now for high blood pressure. A year-and-a-half ago, she was diagnosed with angina; just one thing after another, she said.
And she is still on Avandia as her doctor has yet to take her off, not even after being hospitalized with what was described as heart problems that looked like it could have turned into a stroke if not for her speedy visit.
"I am trying to get off Avandia but when I tried on my own; my sugar went really, really high. I am waiting for my doctor to switch but I don't know what she is waiting for. I see a cardiac specialist but he doesn't know what to do about the diabetes," Kanise said. "You're damned if you do and damned if you don't."
Since the diagnoses, she cannot work in a hospital or care facility, and now can only work two days a week. The corresponding drop in income is affecting her family. She hasn't told her kids, and she downplays the situation to her husband so he won't be afraid, but every time her mother calls and there's no answer, her mom panics.
"I just want my family to be okay, you know," she said. "The thing I did all this school for and worked so hard for, now I can't even do it anymore. I make much less money now but I have to feed the kids."
Kanise was also denied life insurance because of the new diagnoses.
"It's very hard to look at my small children—they would be left without a mom and without any finances as I can't get life insurance. It gets hard sometimes but I keep the faith."
Kanise believes Avandia has left her sick and ineligible for life insurance, yet without actually having a heart attack, she worries that no one will help her.
"Everyday I lay in bed and I say okay Lord, if this is it, make sure my babies are ok," she said.
