General Motors Automotive Recalls

General Motors has recalled nearly 26 million vehicles in the U.S. alone, and almost 29 million worldwide as of June 30, 2014. The automaker has issued 45 vehicle recalls in 2014 alone, and only three of more than three dozen models haven't required GM to notify its customers.

NBC news reports that the only models not among the list of 54 recalls this year are: Chevrolet Equinox crossover, GMC Terrain and the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid.

Faulty Ignition Switch Recall

gmrecallscasepage As of July 2014, General Motors has recalled 17.1 million vehicles worldwide for faulty ignition switches in small cars. The switches can unexpectedly slip from "run"to "accessory,"thereby shutting off the engines. This problem will disable power steering and power brakes, potentially causing people to lose control of their vehicles. The faulty switch also stops airbags from inflating in a crash.

February 2014: GM starts recalling 2.6 million Chevrolet Cobalts, Saturn Ions and other small cars. The automaker says if ignition keys were bumped or jostled, their engines could turn off, disabling critical systems like steering, brakes and air bags. GM admits it knows of eight crashes and six injuries because of this problem. As early as December 2000, drivers of the Impala and other recalled cars complained to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of this problem, according to federal records reviewed by The New York Times.

June 2014: In June alone GM announces three other recalls involving more than 200,000 additional vehicles. Almost half a million Chevrolet Camaros have been recalled from the 2010 to 2014 model years because a driver's knee can bump the key and knock the switch out of the "run" position, causing an engine stall. A stall disables the power steering and brakes and could cause drivers to lose control.

A plug in the brake system can come loose in 63,900 of GM's 2013 and 2014 Cadillac XTS sedans, allowing corrosion and causing overheating that could lead to an engine-compartment fire.

Front passengers who do not wear safety belts in Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana commercial vans can suffer head injuries because the material covering the passenger-side air bag doesn't meet federal standards.

May 2014: GM recalls almost 2.5 million vehicles in the US and nearly 200,00 in Canada for a taillamp malfunction that also can disable the cruise control, traction control, electronic stability control and panic braking assist feature. GM had received several hundred complaints, including 13 crashes and two injuries before issuing the recall in the 2004-2012 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2007 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx, 2005-2010 Pontiac G6 and 2007-2010 Saturn Aura models.

Additionally 20,134 North American vehicles are recalled because "insulation on the engine block heater power cord (if equipped) may become damaged during very cold conditions." 2,990 of these vehicles are in the US:
  • 2011-2014 Chevrolet Cruze
  • 2012-2014 Chevrolet Sonic
  • 2013-2014 Chevrolet Trax
  • 2013-2014 Buick Encore
  • 2013-2014 Buick Verano
March 2014: Seat-mounted side airbags could fail due to a wiring fault in 1.18 million full-size crossover SUVs: the 2009-2013 Chevrolet Traverse, 2008-2013 Buick Enclave, 2008-2013 GMC Acadia and 2008-2010 Saturn Outlook.

A plug in the brake system of 63,900 of GM's 2013 and 2014 Cadillac XTS sedans can come loose, allowing corrosion and causing overheating that could lead to an engine-compartment fire.

January 2014: 303,000 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickup trucks with 4.3-liter and 5.3-liter engines are recalled in the US and 67,000 models sold in Canada and Mexico to reprogram software. GM says a software glitch can cause overheating in the components of the exhaust system, possibly creating a fire.

June 2013: About 194,000 SUVs in the US are recalled because an electrical short in the driver' door could disable the power locks and windows, potentially causing overheating and a fire. The vehicles being recalled are 2006 model year Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL SUVs and 2006 and 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, SAAB 9-7x, and Isuzu Ascender SUVs. As well, 2005 model year 9-7Xs are being recalled.

GM Ignition Switch Lawsuits GM has admitted that it had knowledge of faulty ignition switches for more than a decade but didn't recall the cars until early 2014. Because of this delay GM paid a fine of $35-million to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the company is under investigation by the Justice Department and both houses of Congress. Lawmakers and attorneys believe approximately 100 people have died and hundreds were injured in crashes due to the faulty switches.

The automaker has in place a compensation fund to cover the deaths and injuries linked to the faulty switch that could reach up to $1 billion, according to some analysts.

A class action lawsuit was filed in Seattle seeking up to $10 billion for the loss of resale value of customer' cars. According to Reuters, the complaint alleges that GM hurt customers by "concealing known defects and valuing cost-cutting over safety, leading to roughly 40 recalls"that involved more than 20 million cars and trucks just this year. Further, the recent recalls and defects have caused many recent model cars to lose $500 to almost $3000 in resale value. The lawsuit claims that, "no reasonable consumer would have paid the price they did when the GM brand meant safety and success."

GM said it expects to spend about $2.4 billion to handle all vehicles recalled during the first half of 2014 alone. GM is currently discussing settlements with those plaintiffs involved in accidents, injuries, and deaths related to its recalls and defects.

Gms are the worst. My husband and I have a 2008 Saturn Outlook. I had had a Saturn Ion and had multiple issues with that car too. I took car in to Midas because engine light came on and it said engine overheating. When I took Truck in they did multiple tests and nothing came up but the diagnostic did read ignition faulty. The mechanic said it seems like electrical and that power has not been getting to engine. Than water seeps in through sunroof and soaks passenger floor. Next radio won't power on. Midas had to charge battery however there was no issue with battery. My keys got stuck. Now today engine light came back on. When I turned car off and put it in park. Car started shaking and engine light still was on even in park mode. I restart car and drive it home and park it. Husband goes outside to out key in ignition. Lord and behold key gets stuck and battery dead. I'm still making payment on this worthless piece of crap. Did I mention I had a Saturn Ion that did the same thing. Wow I am so looking for a lawyer because too many people have the same issues. Now I'm without a car that I have two years of payment on. Thanks GM

My 2010 Terrain has been sitting since Feb. 28th, 2016. Its been in and out of the shop in the three years I have had it. Less that 100,000. GMC refuses to recall these. It stopped at a red-light at 1 am and wouldn't go any more. I have been passed around from my dealership to GMC. I am sitting here 9 months without a car to drive and making payments.

11/12/2016- 2010 Buick Enclave

While driving I heard a pop that i thought to be the tire, so I pulled over to check and saw that my car was on fire underneath the dash a little right of he center, it ended up exploding and was reduced to metal and ash. The car has a history of electrical problems just 9 months ago it put itself into park while I was driving after the locks locked and unlocked erratically on their own.

My 2010 Terrain transmission went out at 89k miles. Apparently this is a known problem and GM refuses to help with very costly repair/replacement. Is there anyone out there that knows if there is a lawsuit against them regarding these piece of crap transmissions that are supposed to be maintenance free? The car is just sitting in a parking lot because GM won't help me. Need information from anyone to get them to help me pay for costs of repairs

2007 chevy equinox. A few days ago had a dead battery and tried to charge. Went out to car got in, shut the door, tried to start and it did nothing, tried to open the door to get out and it would not open. It was in the 90's and it got hot inside quickly. I kept trying the doors, nothing would open. A mechanic that was working next door finally heard me pounding on the window and came to get me out. He got enough change on the battery to get me out, he felt the heat as I poured out the door. If your battery goes completely dead, there is no override on the power locks, you can not open anything and its a death trap.

In December of 2015 Christmas Night, I went to go start my 2010 Chevy Equinox and it would not start. I called a tow truck and they took it to a Chevy Dealership. For some reason all of my oil was gone! Just had the oil changed 1 1/2 month earlier. So it was not due for it.
The dealership stated that they would fix the problem and would not have a cost to me.
They told me that there was a "special deal" that GM was having and that it was my gasket and that was the problem.
Since them I have put on new tires at the beginning of July, and needed a resonator. I decided to wait on the resonator until I could get the part in.
July 20th on the way to work, I drove the car and noted that the check oil light came on and noted that I still had one thousand miles to go before that was due. Then the stability track light came on, then the reduced power light came on with the check engine light. I made it to work and called the dealership and made an appt for the next morning. 8:30. On the way there to the dealership, all of this happened again, yet this time, my husband followed me just in case something happened, and it did. Half way to the dealer, as stated this happened again and the engine on the drivers left hand side by the tire it stated to shoot out flames. I stepped on the brake to move over the side of the road, put the car in park, moved my seat back so I could crawl over the console, and my husband pulled on my arm to help get me out of there. My Equinox was on fire. I called 911 and found that others had called also. I sat in the Sheriffs car watching my vehicle burn to the ground there was not much left of it. I really think it had something to do with the work in December! My insurance covered me, but I feel GM should also reimburse me for the problems. IT was probably a silent recall.

Someone help me out here!!
So the other day my car desided to start running really ruff driving down the highway 2012 Chevy Cruze Eco! Traction control light came on! And the check engine light came on!! Then it started bowling smoke! A lot! And pulled off the highway! Right into a shop within mins from the exit! The car clearly was not running no where near of what it should of been! So I called a tow truck company had them tow the car back to the dealership! The dealership got the car and found that a spark plug and coil pack were bad on cylinder 3! Then that did not fix the problem! They told me cylinder 4 had no compression! Then they told me that it was NOT under warranty because the oil was low and they could not find any leaks on the motor so they assumed the oil wasn't full from my last oil change! So anyways I got the car back because I knew there was defiantly a oil leak! Here's some photos does the oil not look fresh or what??
What do I do!!? I don't really want to fix it myself..

Oh and also the part where it is leaking "the dealership" fixed the leak..lasted about a week!

When I even bothered to call a lawyer about my GMC Yukon shutting off while driving and it says reducing engine power I was told oh well 2004 is a older model maybe time to upgrade.I find this awful and non caring lawyer crazy...I buy a vehicle and yes take care of it and see it gets the oil changed and everything checked.I do NOT make the money a lawyer makes and was talking to one from GM most likely!!I was treated bad and they didn't care I had crashed from this and have and will have severe neck pain for life!I hope GM pays dearly for this. When mine failed I hit a tree head on and if you or your love ones own one please be safe because they are a LIFE THREAT!DEATH TRAP!!

The Terrain needs to be recalled, too. Websites are full of citations of ignition problems, deceleration problems, stalling, and unresolved error/warning lights. We have had these experiences, spent thousands in so-said repairs, and have no resolution.

July 2015, my son was driving his 2012 Corvette, HE PURCHASEDBRAND NEW (Against my wishes. He was21 at purchase) while driving on Dallas interstate. He changed lanes, his 2012 Corvette lost control. The traction control did NOT assist, ABS BRAKE LIGHTS NEVER CAME ON NOR DID ABS HELP TO STOP HIM FROM SKIDDING, SLIDDING causing HIM TO CRASH straight into the concrete HOV barries,THE AIR BAGS- NEVER deployed.
MY SON SUSTAINED HEAD, BACK, NECK, INJURIES, HE HAD NO MEDICAL INSURANCE BCOZ HE JUST STARTED A NEW JOB AND WAS WAITING OUT THE ALLOTTED 90 DAY PERIOD. HE WASOUT OF WORK FOR 3 MONTHS,NO PAY. HE GOT BEHIND ON 3 CAR PAYMENTS, AFTER HAVING PERFECT PAYMENT HISTORY. THE LENDER ALLY/GMAC REPOSSESS HIS CAR FROM THE BODY SHOP!!
THE ACCIDENT WAS NOT MY SONS FAULT. GM CARS ARE HORRIBLE METAL DEATH TRAPS.

We called GM, they told us they would remove the black box that works with Onstar to review the incident.
Months later my son had to call them asking what was found. Their reply. 1.You were NOT speeding
2. Not sure why traction control never came on
3. Not sure why air bags did not deploy.

ACCIDENT CLEARLY GM AT FAULT. NOW MY SON CAN'T GET HIS CAR FROM ALLY/GMAC UNLESS HE PAYS OVER $14.000 YES, FOURTEEN THOUSAND IN FEES...
I NEED TO GO TO THE NEWS MEDIA. I REFUSE TO SEE THIS KEEP HAPPENING TO GOOD PEPOPLE. I HAVE BEEN IN CAR BUSINESS FOR 20 YEARS.
NEVER WOULD REFER OR SELL ANYONE A GM VEHICLE.
