Cipro Side Effects

Cipro (generic name Ciprofloxacin, also known as Ciproxin and Ciprobay) is used to fight bacterial infections, including bronchitis, pneumonia, sexually transmitted infections, skin infections and urinary tract infections. Numerous Cipro side effects have been linked to the antibiotic, including tendon ruptures. Recently, Bayer Pharmaceuticals, maker of Cipro, issued a warning that there are also liver toxicity issues associated with the Cipro antibiotic.

Cipro Tendon Rupture

Cipro tendon ruptures can involve the Achilles heel, shoulder, hand, bicep or thumb. The risk of tendon ruptures or of Cipro tendonitis (tendinitis) increased in patients older than 60, people who have received kidney, heart or lung transplants, and people on steroid therapy. Tendon ruptures can occur in patients who do not have any of those risk factors and can also occur several months after patients finish their Cipro treatment.

cipro tendon ruptureCipro antibiotic is in a class of drugs called fluoroquinolones, a prescription drug used to treat common respiratory infections including bacterial sinusitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia in adults.

Bayer AG developed Cipro—the first fluoroquinolone to be on the market—in 1987. Since that time studies have shown that Cipro and other fluoroquinolones have been misused and overprescribed.

One study on lab rats found that the rodents' Achilles tendons underwent "degenerative alterations" shortly after Cipro therapy began and ruptures continued to occur even after the animals stopped receiving the drug. Researchers now believe that Cipro may cause a toxic effect on connective tissue structures, thereby explaining tendon ruptures. Researchers speculate that Cipro tendon rupture may be as high as 1 in 250.

As of July 8, 2008, Cipro carries a black box warning alerting patients to the risk of experiencing tendon ruptures or tendonitis (tendinitis). The black box warning was added after Public Citizen, a public interest watchdog organization, sued the FDA, asking the court to force the FDA to respond to a petition, filed by Public Citizen, requesting a black box warning on Cipro.

The FDA recommends that physicians should advise patients to stop taking Cipro at the first sign of tendon pain, swelling or inflammation, as these symptoms can precede tendon rupture.

It’s bad enough when a prescription medication leaves you with a nasty, but temporary side effect. It’s another thing entirely when a devastating side effect proves permanent. Neuropathy has increased throughout the years since 1990. Took cipro again in 2001 and it gave me Severe Neuropathy which I couldn’t prove to Dissability Office so they wouldn’t give it to me. Been disabled since 2001.

The tendon over my bicep on my left arm is left bunched up on the inside of my arm leaving me very uncomfortable. I have pain when lifting my arm now. Also, I now have double vision two and a half years after taking Cipro. It's like a ghost image best described as bluriness, but at night I see two distinct images when I look at bright objects. Cover one eye and I still see double and the double vision is exactly the same in both eyes. The objects are seen as one on top of the other. This may have to do with damage to tiny muscles in the eye. All I know is that lately I've been having more and more serious issues and I haven't taken any prescriptions since Cipro two and half years ago. Also to be noted, I have severe intestinal flora problems now and I have to constantly take probiotics and make sure not to upset the yeast that replaced all the bacteria that Cipro killed in my gut. Yes, I have candida overgrowth and it is almost confounding to think about since it has it's own endless list of hard to trace symptoms. Candida is also flying under the radar and thrives on anything that breaks down into sugars. So pretty much have to worry about eating anything.

I'm in this lawsuit because of the large quantities of Cipro, and levaquin I.V. and Pill form I've been given, some by an Infectious Disease DR after he knew I was allergic to them but was administered with counter meds and continued to pump. besides the years of Tendon problems, the surgeries, and Physical Therapy for ankles, and my thumbs and wrists, now the Neuropathy is making life pure hell. Muscle pain and weakness, bones hurting, hands, arms, legs, hips, feet, neck, back, and no position is comfortable to try to sleep some nights. I Have plenty of medications for it, but no meds eliminate or ease that kind of pain, but do slightly ease it. Seldom does it help to provide much relief on bad days, and you pray at times for just a short break in the waves of pain to get a little nap. Now they are talking about doing more ablation on the nerves to try to ease it, and again I pray that it will, as I'll take any ease of pain, and relief from the pills so my stomach isn't always upset. I can't think of a punishment bad enough for these pharmaceutical companies who's greed was more important than our pain. And I'm not stupid enough to think that the Attorney's won't take the lions share of any award since that's what they do, and that's what the court allows, but at least it will cost them some pain in the pocket, no matter how many high end cars it will buy the Law firms instead of the people who suffered.

In 2008 my life changed. I went to the doctor to be treated for bronchitis. I was prescribed cipro, steroids, inhaler. A few days later I woke up with my left hand tingling. Through out the day it became worse. Next morning I couldn't use my left arm. I was scared I did nothing to cause this. I went to the hospital. They said tendinitis. I explained I had never had an issue i woke up like this. They insisted tendinitis. Referred me to a surgeon and nerologist. Many symptoms developed as the days passed. I couldn't use my left arm. It was pain, numb, and tingling all the time. Extreme head aches, both my legs became weak I couldn't walk up stairs. My head felt foggy. I had extreme memory loss. I had to set alarms to remember to pick up my kids from school. I would be driving and forget where I was going. I felt crazy. I have 4 children stay at home mom I was full of energy always going above and beyond. Then out of no where I couldn't even take care of my kids without help. I recently found out it was due to cipro. We depend on doctors to help us. Cipro has ruined my life. I have been suffering since I was 27. I wonder will it ever get better.

At 82,I rarely take antibiotics and almost never have a UTI, but I did both in late October of 2014. I am an athlete and a hard driving old lady. In other words very active! I may have never taken Cipro in my life, and took a complete round for the UTI. Within a week, symptoms which I now know were from the antibiotic, began occurring at the base of my scull, traveling down my neck, across shoulders and down upper arm to elbows. Pain was almost unbearable and debilitation resembled paralysis. For seven months I saw 7 MDs, had 2 MRIs and 4-5 X-rays. Since Cirpo is not a regular med I may not have mentioned the UTI and/or medication dose. My key reason for responding here is to spread the word for others. I believe active people must be warned by their physicians as a matter of course.
Thanks

I have not been diagnosed with PN as of yet. I have, however, been on Cipro a lot in the past 11 years for infections and Crohn’s disease. I just heard about this issue with Cipro, did some research and I can relate to almost all of the symptoms of PN. All of these issues I’ve been discussing with my doctors for years now and none of them looked as far as nerve damage, and always blame my symptoms on other medications I’m on. After researching this, I know this explains a lot of my discomfort I’ve battled over the past three years or so. Any information you might have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I have been on Cipro several times this year treating a kidney infection. Starting in August, I received it by IV and oral. I recently had surgery on the 30th of October. Ovarian cyst and ovaries removed. Afterwards I had problems with my hand and leg. The doctors have now diagnosed me with neuropathy.

In 2002 I was hospitalized because the drug cipro caused my skin to peel off in my hands, under my arms, under my feet and also caused my finger nails and toe nails to fall off. I will never forget it It was devastating. As of today my toe nails will grow up to 1 half inch high. Really sad.

I had taken Cipro for many years, and about 2 to 3 years ago, my right arm started hurting with severe pain along with numbness, tingling and burning. It wakes me up in the middle of the night; I can just be sitting here and my arm just starts tingling and going numb. I thought I was having a stroke or something. My doctor said that I have tendonitis. Can you help me with this?

After taking Cipro to treat a UTI, less than one month later, I was diagnosed with shoulder tendonitis in my right shoulder (rotator cuff), then one week later, my right index finger became immobile due to tendonitis, and the following week, my left knee became inflamed due to quad tendonitis.

I can hardly walk for the last two months because of tendinitis on both my Achilles tendons, and now my knee has been hurting too. I feel dizzy half the time and nauseous. I stopped taking the pill about 2 months ago and the doctor said NOTHING of these side effects when prescribed for prostatitis then. I had a job offer on hold and an interview canceled because of this and I am currently on "Light/Duty" at work also. I am in Law enforcement so my career depends on my physical ability. Needless to say I am extremely worried.

Taking a medication that causes damage to tendons DOES NOT outweigh the benefit of clearing a bacterial infection. This drug should state "If you experience ANY tendon pain after taking ONE PILL, CALL YOUR DOCTOR AND STOP TAKING THE MEDICATION IMMEDIATELY." It's that simple and this would have saved me from this pain that does not seem to be getting better.

As a plumber, my job requires me to have strength in my arms. These tendon ruptures had to be fixed surgically, it resulted in some time off work, illness, extreme pain, hardship for my family and I have had to look for other ways to earn a living. I am still employed as a plumber but I worry about the next injury and how I will support my family if it happens again.

The tendonitis I have developed has appeared in both of my forearms. I work in both the art field (painting, drawing, sculpting, computer work) as well as in the movie industry (building, painting miniatures).

I use my hands constantly and the tendonitis I have developed has prevented me from doing most of the aforementioned activities for prolonged periods of time. I have experienced loss of strength in my grip, pain in my forearms, and the inability to use hand tools effectively.

i was prescribed CIpRO for prostate treatments & procedures. I did not connect my foot, shoulder, and arm pain (diagnosed as tendonitus and plantar fascitis) - until this warning came out.

My pain is still almost unbearable and I am seeing another doctor this week.

I have to have another procedure done, and the doctor was going to prescribe CIPRO again - I explained situation - he just put down i was 'allergic' to CIPRO so they wouldn't give it to me again.
I can't do the yard work anymore - nothing with my right arm involved.

My husband is a former Marine. He kept in shape over the years & was in great physical condition in 1998 before taking Cipro. He was in his early 40's at that time and quite strong. Shortly after taking Cipro, his arms & legs started to jerk involuntarily when he would try to rest, tiny sores appeared around his ankles, the bottom left corner of his lip swelled (angioedema), insomnia, vivid nightmares, rectal bleeding, anxiety, panic attacks & other things started to occur.

Around a month after taking Cipro, the muscle & joint pain started. It was bad. He thought he was developing rheumatoid arthritis. Not long after that, the severe depression came along with suicidal thoughts & acts. In Jan. 1999, he took a loaded .38 revolver, placed it in his mouth & pulled the trigger. He survived that attempt. The bullet went through his cheek instead of his brain. He started having tendonitis which was extremely rare for him. In 1999, he had his first rupture in the back of his left calf around 11 months after taking Cipro.

This was an avulsion because the muscle tore completely loose from where it was attached at the bottom of the calf. In 2000, the quadriceps tendon tore at his right knee. In 2001, a quadriceps muscle tore apart in the center of his right thigh. All these injuries occurred with no warning. None of the doctors knew what caused this. His legs were very damaged at this point and causing him quite a bit of pain. He kept trying to work though, telling me as long as he had two good arms left, he'd make a living for his family.

For the next few years the ruptures seemed to have stopped & there were no suicide attempts. He was still suffering from so much pain in his body & all the other things were still going on. In 2004, he took CiproXR. Shortly afterwards most of the previous conditions he was having from the first time he took Cipro got far worse such as the involuntary jerking movements of his arms & legs, rectal bleeding, his lip swelled just like before (this lasted for only a few days each time it occurred), bigger sores with dark centers in patches appeared on his body and all the others things got worse. He started having severe headaches & migraines frequently.

The numbness in his legs got worse & started in his hands. Tendonitis cases became more frequent. Around 11 months after taking CiproXR, his triceps ruptured at his right elbow in 2005. Months later his triceps & biceps were damaged in his right arm. Near the end of 2005, another tendon ruptured in his lower left forearm using the amount of pressure a person would use to squeeze a blood pressure bulb. His depression became severe again & suicidal thoughts & acts returned. He became disabled after this. I never thought a medicine could do all this. He had 6 ruptures & no one knew why. This should not have happened to him or anyone else.

I was given a prescription for Cipro by my gynecologist for a urinary tract infection. After taking the medication, I went on a cruise with a friend and my left foot began to hurt. I was unable to stand for very long and could not put any weight on it. I was examined by the ship's doctor who advised me to see my doctor upon my return home. I went to three differenct doctors, all of whom said I had to go into a cast for between four and six weeks. Finally, that was what I had to do. Since the doctor would not give me a walking cast, I was forced to hop a great deal of the time and as a result I have numerous broken blood vessels in my right leg, which are very unattractive and somewhat painful.
I need to have them removed surgically.

I have experienced progressive degeneration of my ability to walk after being prescribed Cipro at least 6 times a year for the last 6 years, for chronic UTI's. My feet and legs are numb and painful from the knee down. I have broken my right ankle twice in the last 2 years (I am a full time public school teacher). I have had many medical tests and procedures to find the source of the problem, and nothing has helped.

I was given Cipro. This all started at the end of April 2006. All of this happened to me because I was given Cipro for a simple UTI. I was dizzy for three and half weeks, vertigo, nausea, then the ear pressure, spots in left eye, flashes in left eye, short term memory loss, horrible dreams, weak wrists and knees, massive floaters headaches, ears ringing, dry eyes, itching all over, rashes, insomnia, dark spots in left eye, eye pain, blurred vision, sensitive to sound, vitreous detachment happened in left eye and now happening with the right eye. I have filed a complaint with Med Watch and with Consumer Affairs. My life is ruined for a simple UTI. I wish I never saw the doctor that day and I wish to have my life back. It's hard to wake up each day, my eyes are full of spots, floaters, sensitive to light, reading, now driving is almost impossible. My life was instantly and drastically changed.
