Everest College Students File Class Action Over School's Accreditation, Credits and Costs

Were you looking for For-Profit Education Fraud lawsuits?
- by

Salt Lake City, UT: A class action lawsuit filed in Salt Lake City, Utah alleges that Everest College systematically lures potential students into its programs with misleading information about the school's accreditation, transferability of credits, and cost. Everest is one of the brands used by for-profit education company Corinthian Colleges, Inc., which is named as a defendant in the lawsuit. Corinthian operates approximately 100 Everest campuses around the country, and also operates Everest University Online.

The lawsuit alleges two primary forms of wrongdoing by Everest. First, it alleges that Everest makes misrepresentations to potential students about whether credits or degrees earned at Everest can be transferred to other post-secondary universities and community colleges, and, even though it informs potential students that it is "accredited," fails to disclose that the type of "accreditation" Everest has is not generally recognized by other post-secondary institutions. The lawsuit alleges that Everest "admissions counselors" lied to prospective students about whether credits earned at Everest would be accepted for transfer to non-profit or public universities in Utah. The result is that students who had hoped to use the Everest programs as a "stepping stone" to a degree from a non-profit or public university discovered, after incurring tens-of-thousands of dollars in debt, that their time and money had been wasted.

Second, the lawsuit alleges that Everest makes misrepresentations and omissions about the cost of its programs. The complaint in the lawsuit details how prospective students are lured into one-on-one meetings with "admissions counselors" who provide the prospective students with cost "estimates." However, Everest then has the students apply for student loans -- which are dispersed directly to Everest -- far in excess of those estimates.

The lawsuit was brought by three former students of Everest's Salt Lake City campus, and alleges claims for fraud, negligent misrepresentation, and violation of Utah's Consumer Sales Practices Act.

I attended Georgia Medial institute 2003-2004 on line, and than 2005 in the classroom for billing and coding Administration. I just found out all these years that my Associates Degree I have obtained is not valid? No way, I have my transcripts stating completed Associates Degree. I hope they lost their accreditations after I completed my Associates Degree? I tried to get a copy of my degree again and I was not able to locate it. I have e-mailed and nothing so far.

Thank god for the three nurses in florida that first brought this injustice to light against the Everest university in Tampa but what about the rest of us. I went to Everest online for criminal justice for around 2006 - 2010. And have nothing but the huge debt they left me. Please help

I started college at Everest on November of 2014 and finished in July of 2015. We even had a graduation. When I tried to transfer to K.U. I was told that all my credits were worthless. I spent hours, and hours working for that diploma. I’m now 42 years old with no diploma and working part time jobs at minimum wage. The Dept. of Education keeps telling me that they are about to discharge my loan, but it’s now been 3 years and nothing has happened. I’m angry for not doing enough research for this school. I just had to file for disability sent in the paperwork of my disability to the Dept. of Education and still nothing has happened. Please help me because I don’t know what else to do.

I attended Everest College and was promised so much from the Diploma Pharmacy Technician Course. I graduated July 27,2010 and promised job placement and then transition into the degree program and neither happen as the Largo Florida campus closed after I graduated. I have been just informed I and other students who attended before July 1,2011 do not qualify for this loan forgiveness and we are to pay back. I refuse to pay anything back as I feel it was a scam just so they can get money. I and the other students who attended this school no matter the year enrolled before 2011 should be included as they lied and scammed every single student for the programs there. I want an answer back on how to handle this problem.

To Whom It May Concern:

I went to Corinthian College in 2009-2011 but the college withdraw me from college but were still collecting off of me for the next two years. I was never involved with the class action suit. I found out that the school was being sued by a classmate. I'm in college right now trying to get my bachelor's degree but money isn't there from this college using my funds. How can I get those funds to go toward my degree program now? I need help.

I went to Everest University (Corinthian College) and graduated in 2012 in Accounting, I am trying to go back to college because I work at our local college and would like to further my career. I was told today that my college credit hours and classes will not transfer to any other college, but yet I am paying on my student loans from Everest….I was told “I need to do transfer my hours to a college that does accept courses from Independent Colleges or Nationally Accredited Universities or I can test out of courses I taken at a Regionally Accredited School to gain credit instead of retaking the courses.”…I want answers on my options, I have several hours from Everest and I am in debt with student loans. This place took advantage of myself along with several others. I never received anything saying they was being in trouble of any kind or I would have responded. Thank you Tammy

I went to Everest and graduated class of 2011, I went for medical assisting and when it came to my externship they sent me to a chiropractor office who doesn't even hire MA. After doing all my hours there they tried to tell me those hours didn't count cause it was the wrong Dr office obviously, and tried to get me to do another 250 of externship. Once I graduated I went every week to try to find a job and the only one available required me to jump from state to state 4 days a week leaving my then 3 yr old home with my parents. I couldn't find a job else where cause I need to be certified which I couldn't get, and I didn't have 2 yrs experience. I need help in forgiving my loans how do I do that?

Meanwhile my friend (old Everest class mate) had received the same letter in the mail from Everest. one month later she received multiple checks paying back every penny she had ever paid out. We went through the exact classes and times. I need to know whats going to happen with my loans. Please help me. I need to get to the bottom of this. Please e-mail me a phone number so I can talk with a person regarding this event. PLEASE RESPOND

I went to Everest University in Jacksonville FL, completed the Medical Administrative Assistant course and internship or externship whatever they want to call it. Every hospital or Doctors office I went to for a job stated we do not hire Everest graduates because they never have enough credit hours and are not taught what we need them to know. So I and out $15000.

I went to Everest College back in 2009 & 2010 for the Medical Assistance program. I was promised a guaranteed job and state certification right out of school. My student loans were for $6,000.00 and a grant for $3,000.00. When I was done with school I was given a diploma not a certification. I owed like $15,000.00 and couldn't get a job because I was required to have a certification. Everything Everest said in their interview and billing was a complete lie!! I tried to take the state certification test through the AAMA and wasn't able to pass it due to not receiving the proper reading material or being taught everything that should've been taught. I spoke with a person who worked for the AAMA and she asked to see all my books I paid for. Turns out I wasn't given all the proper material. I was shorted 6 required books in order to learn and complete the course. Due to this I had a choice, I either go to another school or try to study and pass the test. I couldn't go to another school cause my credits wouldn't transfer. So everything I did was a loss and waste of money and nothing but a huge debt. I feel I've been robbed of an education that meant nothing and student loans.

I was a student with Everest College online and I will not be able to transfer my credits to receive my BA degree. The price was more then what they stated. False promises about job placement and availablity in my area, false information and guidance from advisors and finanical advisors, misleading information on costs on tution for classes.

I graduated from Everest in 2009 with $15000 in debt with the promice of them helping me find a job. That did not happen and I have not been able to use my degree in Medical Asisitance so I went to another college finding I have zero transfer credits.

I was told that Everest counselors would help me in finding a job in my related field of study. I made sure my resume was utd, that my GPA was high, and that I studied hard to keep it there. Every time I went to the counselors office to sign paperwork, never did I see the total amount of fees and or prices that I was told I would have to pay back. When I did ask, all they kept saying was that my monthly payment would not increase. I trusted them, I did what was told of me the entire time. When I graduated with my masters, I had a whopping 120,000 bill and I cried the day they handed me my degree. Not because I was happy, but because I knew I would never be able to pay that amount back unless I died and then it would be erased. Sallie Mae was called the following week and the representative was silent when she saw my account. She got back on the phone and said "Sallie Mae over gave your limit and how Sallie Mae never saw this is shocking." I said, I'm calling because I need to know how much you are going to charge me each month." I had tears rolling down my face while I was talking to her and her reply was, I'm estimating "1800 dollars." Had the counselors been upfront with me in my bill, I would have stopped at my associates. Days later I bumped into a counselor that was once in my school building and she said word for word, "What that school is doing is wrong, and I will never go back, they are lying to ya'll." This was back in 08 and I wish....I wish, I would've taken her words to heart. I will never be able to pay the 120 grand I owe and I will never be able to buy a home because of it. Everest not only gave me false hope for myself, but for the future of my kids as well. I hope this school and the other schools involved are happy and content living it up in high class restaurants and pricey cars because for us former students, we are living paycheck to paycheck hoping that someone will speak up and help us.

I am in the same boat. I went thru the same misleading lies, about the transfer of credits. I was with Florida Metropolitan University. Then Everest Bought our FMU while I was a student. I was also told my credits would transfer, nada, they do not. Since I was stuck I continued with my degree. But as others have said, I am not successful in finding a job in my chosen career field. Once they find out it is Everest they won't give me the time of day. Nor would Everest take hardly any of my transfer in credits from FMU, of whom they had bought out. I noticed overcharges to the Federal Student grants and loans I had. Including the in-house student loan I had. that turned out to be more than 3 times what it should have been. I'm not sure if I want to be in a class action suit or go separately with my own attorney. They would have to offer me quite a bit. I am so angry, I did this degree to better myself while taking care of a terminally ill husband so I could afford to support him and then take care of myself after he was gone. I have to think very hard on this. But I definitely have to do something, my student loan debt is up close to $50,000.00.

I graduated from Everest online (Brandon Fl. area) in 2011, the job placement was a job fair at the Brandon, Fl. campus with 6 companies looking for menial positions, my so called degree was in Business Marketing, not selling Satellite T.V. dishes in the mall, a worthless degree, ruined credit. II have over 80k in student loans debt.......Thanks Everest

I attended Everest, I was promised job placement. When I did my externship they said I didn't have the experience I needed for the job. All the questions they asked me if I had done, I had to tell them no. I now have a 15000.00 bill with no hope of paying it back. I don't feel their students should have to pay it back. They didn't give us enough to work with.

Chicago... I graduated from Everest in Feb 2011.. Still no job in Medical Field... I have over 30,000 in loans and work for an Airline now. Airline and Medical field are two different arenas. No one acknowledges Everest in Chicago as important and simply will not hire me. I hate that I ever made the decision to go to Everest

I also attended Everest Corinthian Online College 2006-2008 for my Associate in Accounting. I have over a 30,000.00 student loan I have been paying on with Sallie Mae which should have never been that high of a loan amount for an Associates degree. Till this day I have never received my Diploma from them nor will they give me my transcripts, I have been unable to get an accounting job due to I have no proof of ever having a degree in that field. This college was a rip off now I have a student loan of over 30,000.00 and have just been paying interest on my loan for 8 years and will probably be paying on this until I die and will go to my grave with out ever having proof of graduating, and pay on something for the rest of my life when knowing over the years this was a bogus college that just took people for there money and put them in debt for the rest of there lives. And made promises to them that they could not even back up.

I had placed a complaint through this Big Class Action back in 2014 and I have not heard anything from the site or a lawyer. Everest mislead me to believe that I will obtain a job through them and that they will and would work with me beyond and after graduation. But that never happen. I was a 2008 graduate. The intake counselor Kre Kre, that is no longer with Everest due to a horse back injuirie. I am so disappointed with Everest. They lied and mislead me to believe I would definitly get a job. I have more to add with this on the information that I confided with Kre Kre with and she not the professional I thought she was. God I can not believe this. Please will someone please contact me about this. Email or call.

When I enrolled into the school I was told I would graduate with an Associate Degree not true on diploma of completion, I was told I would owe a balance wrong again I had to pay almost 600.00 before I could be done. No job placement, the course I thought I was taking was a lie as well. I was charged more then I signed for. This was a horrible experience.

I walked the stage for everest graduation heartbroken and with a ton of debt. Admissions informed me about the "estimates" after they applied me for many loans. I was to start payments while in school and six months after i graduate or drop below six credits if i am not in school. I am a current student but i cant take any loans because Everest has been overcharging my account with loans for no reason. I was not given any help with finding a job upon my graduation in March of 2013. I was also racially profiled by staffs of Everest services along with another student while on extern.

When checking into an RN degree I was told that my preveous credits did not transfer and the time and money I spent was wasted! Also my student loans are so big for an MA that I was unable to afford to pay them back. I was unable to find a job as an MA and have a job as a dialysis tech.

I have around $10,000.00 in student loans with Everest. They promised I would have a job making up to $40,000.00 a year within a month of graduating. After I graduated I received no help in finding a job. I finally found one on my own after six months, and it only paid $10.00 an hour. I was a single mom and barely made enough to pay my bills let alone pay off my student loans. And now my certification is under scrutiny and I was not able to get another job in pharmacy and had to switch to another career to support my family, so I am not even able to use the certification that I paid all that money to go to school for. I do not think I should have to pay back on a loan for something I am not even able to use due to their deceit.

Misleading information and misrepresentation of total cost of the program. I have letters and documents stating the facts.

Falsified representation of career opportunities and wages; obscene tuition; aggressive tactics during enrollment; very poor follow-up and continuing support after enrollment and graduation; illogical module structure; unrealistic attendance policy; detrimental makeup policies.

Posted by

Falsified job claims, practically forced to join. I was not financially able to handle these at the time. All I have been told when applying for jobs is I have no experience and they wanted people with experience. So now I am being harassed to start paying by an outside company saying that there is an impending garnishment.

I took classes online at Everest and my tuition went up every semester even after they told me I had a set tuition. I racked UP $66,000 in student loans that I can't pay back just for a degree I can't do anything with.

I also attended Everest Institute in 2009. I had to take out three additional loans to pay for this school. Now I am in debt, being a single mother of eight children. I was told that I would always be able to call the career service center for help with obtaining a job. Well, I am currently in Tennesee and cannot do so here. Also I was told that my credits would be transferrable. BIG LIE!! The amount of money I paid to go here was not feasible to my living situation. I thought I was doing a good thing to help further myself to better take care of my family. Everything that has been stated in this lawsuit is exactly true because I myself have been a victim of it.

High cost, incompetent teachers, misrepresenting wages and job placement rates, new teachers every day as no permanent teacher for class. These people take advantage of people in need. instead of an education, people are left with debt. It's sad that clinics and hospitals have begun to be prejudiced against Everest graduates due to bad performance on the school’s behalf to educate. You need only to have been employed 2 years as a medical assistant to be an educator. No educator experience needed.

I went to Everest and was promised they would help me, they would help me get a job and always be there to make sure I had a job. Two months after graduation, I stopped hearing from anyone, and it’s like i never went there. I can’t get a job in my field because no one wants to hire anyone with Everest on their resume for schooling. Now I’m stuck with thousands of dollars in debt because i wanted to follow my dream. Everest is a scam and I’m tired of being stuck in debt to a school that should be closed down for lying! I hate paying for something i can’t use now!

I am at a loss, both financially and physically. I don't know where to turn.
