Honda Announces Additional Airbag Inflator Recall Affecting 833,000 Vehicles

Detroit, MI: Honda has announced that it is expanding an earlier recall of certain vehicles over airbag defects. This latest recall includes some 2001 and 2002 Accord and Civic, 2002 Odyssey, 2002 and 2003 CR-V, 2002 and 2003 Acura 3.2 TL and 2003 Acura 3.2 CL models. This brings the total number of vehicles recalled over airbag issues to 833,000.

Honda said it is increasing the number of vehicles recalled because some of the vehicles may have had defective airbags installed or fixed following an accident. According to a statement issued by the automaker on Monday, May 2 2011, the airbags could inflate with too much force causing a casing to break which in turn could cause injury or death to the occupant(s).

According to a report on MSNBC.com Honda said that during the February 2010 recall, detailed below, it was aware of 12 incidents linked to problems with its airbags, including one death and 11 injuries.

In February, 2010, Honda expanded a previously announced recall of certain 2001 and 2002 model-year vehicles to replace the driver's airbag inflator in an additional 378,758 vehicles in the U.S.

The driver's airbag inflators in these vehicles may deploy with too much pressure, which can cause the inflator casing to rupture and could result in injury or fatality. In total, Honda is aware of 12 incidents related to this issue as of February 2010.

Affected vehicles include some 2001 and 2002 Accord, Civic, Odyssey, and CR-V models, as well as 2002 Acura TL models. One Honda Pilot and one Acura CL vehicle produced in late 2002, are also included. For full details see the link below.

My son owned a 2001 Honda Civic. He was in a rollover accident, and after the airbag deployed, it caught fire and the whole car was a total loss including all of his personal contents that were lost. Thankfully, he was able to escape just prior to the car being engulfed in flames.
