Wrongful Self Storage Auctions

Were you looking for Wrongful Storage Contents Auctions lawsuits?

Storage companies face lawsuits alleging people who rent storage lockers from them have been subjected to wrongful storage contents auctions in which their property has been wrongfully auctioned off, in violation of state laws. These wrongful auctions involve the selling of property stored in a rented locker when the renter fails to pay. Although not all storage locker auctions are illegal, there are certain requirements that must be met before a person's property can be auctioned off.

Storage Locker Auctions

storageunitsarticle Storage locker auctions are typically held when a person has failed to pay for the use of a storage locker. Self-storage companies might respond by refusing to allow the person access to the locker or by auctioning off the contents of the locker. When property is auctioned without the person's knowledge it falls under conversion, which refers to the illegal taking of someone's personal property without that person's consent.

When property from a storage locker is auctioned off, it is often at a profit to the storage company. In other words, the auction company makes more off the auction than was owed on the storage locker.

Consumers have complained that their property has been auctioned off without their knowledge. State laws, such as the California Self Storage Act, require self-storage companies to meet certain conditions before a person's property is auctioned. These conditions include sending two separate notice letters prior to denying a person access to a storage locker or the property contained within.

Furthermore, some consumers allege they failed to make payments due to mitigating circumstances or that when they tried to contact the storage company they were unable to reach anyone.

Wrongful Auctions

It is not illegal for a storage facility to auction a person's items if that person has failed to pay rent on a storage locker. There are, however, certain conditions that must be met before that auction is held. Failure to meet those requirements could result in a lawsuit against the storage facility, regardless of if the failure was intentional or an accident, such as when the wrong storage unit is auctioned off.

Conversion complaints can result in punitive damages awarded to the plaintiff. Lawsuits have been filed against storage companies alleging storage locker renters had their possessions wrongfully auctioned off.

There needs to be oversight on this exploitative "business" whereby these "owner/proprieters increase the cost of rental to the point that the renters are forced by any hardship to LOSE EVERYTHING.
REMEMBER - the "owners" have ALMOST ZERO OVERHEAD!!!! Their income is essentially ALL GRAVY. While the greedy investors were greasing the palms of lawmakers to acquire the "right" to outright STEAL the belongings of everyone who was paying them to provide protection for their belongings,
THEY DID NOT ALERT ALL THOSE RENTING FROM THEM THAT THEY WERE PLOTTING TO SET UP THE CIRCUMSTANCES WHERE THEY CAN STEAL OUR PROPERTY IN LESS THAN A MONTH just by sending two certified letters and then kicking the property OWNER to the curb.
How does this NOT violate our basic RIGHT TO OWN PROPERTY?!!!!!!! There is NO CONSIDERATION of the rights of someone who has been paying for years to maintain their property and in one difficulty life interval can have all of it STOLEN BY LAWFARE!!!!! by proprietors who operate exploitatively with NO SCRUPLES OR OVERSIGHT AGAINST THEIR PREDATIONS

My father lived in Florida with his girlfriend, and he died in January 2018 of CHD. Because of the heart disease my father lost some of his mental abilities, and his girlfriend manipulate him into signing his entire estate over to her and her family, include my father's condo which had all of the pictures. (Pictures, tapes and scrapbooks of my sister and I when we were just born. as babies with our parents, on my father's 32' houseboat the "Sparky," my first time sitting on Santas lap, my sister losing her first tooth, both my sister and I crawling and walking for the first time, etc.) My father had told me that when he passed away, he wanted my sister and I to have the pictures, and he wanted me to bury his ashes with his parents. But I did not find out that my father has died until 2 years later because it was delayed and kept from me. and by then it was too late to dispute the probate of his will. So, she received the pictures and his ashes, and when she was asked where they were, she said in a storage facility, but would not tell me the name or where it is so I could find out if the pictures and items. I do not think that she has ownership of the storage facility anymore because she did not have the money to pay the fees. But she still refuses to give us any info about where the picture and my father's ashes may be. So, if she did not pay the storage fee, and the items did go up for auction somewhere out there. I am hoping that maybe someone saw these pictures and saved them with the thought that maybe these pictures are important to someone out there. I would like to see if I could retrieve them if possible because these are the only baby pictures in existence, as well as the only ones left of my father and his family, and I do finally want to bury my father as was his last wish. The storage may be in Daytona Beach, Florida, or in that area. Please help us.!

I'm in the same boat as many of you...
Has anyone managed to get any of their stuff back after the auction?
If so, how?

Also, if you are currently locked out of your unit at the Public Storage in Lisle, IL, I may be able to help.

Here’s the thing. We’re all human, and we all understand that things happen, and life happens. But YOU and only YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for paying for the unit/space you’re renting PERIOD.
Yes people lose their jobs, and get hurt, get sick, and yes that all may not be any fault of your own, but it’s not the storage companies fault either. You rent a space just like you rent an apartment. The rent is due on the first of the month no matter what. So wait let me get this straight. Because you were hurt in an accident by a drunk driver, lost your job, house etc. the storage company was just suppose to keep your items there for whatever length of time it took you to actually start to be able to pay for the space?? That sounds ridiculous. If a storage company did that, they wouldn’t have a business they would have a junk yard. Yes you can get fees waved, and most companies will even offer you deals to pay 1/2 or even a quarter of the bill as long as you move your items out immediately. The problem is people ignore or wait months and months to communicate, and then they’re surprised when their items are sold?? Most storage companies don’t auction items until your bill has not been paid for 60+ days. People just have entitlement issues. No one owes you anything. It’s a business they’re trying to run. Not a damn junk yard!

They are about to take all my memories, my clothes and furniture despite me trying to create a payment plan. They refuse, they would rather auction my items and leave me penniless.

California storage unit has been notified by UPS of waiting certified mail regarding an Opposition to Lien multiple times. Storage place are refusing to pick it up or ignoring it. The law requires it to be sent by certified mail.
What are our remedies?

I had a three year employment contract with Beehive Storage /Storage City. I set my life aside closed my business and put everything I owned in their storage unit. Over a period of time. I started looking at Utah Code laws how to enforce a lien, I was observing how the owners was processing these auctions was not up to Utah Code. in fact I noticed that she would advertise her customers units 5-7 days after they were past due 30 days. It didn't matter to her if the customer recived the lien letter or not. she demanded the manager cut the locks report to her the contents. She never advertised the auctions in the county the property was stored in. she didn't list names or contents. And then she would auction the units 3 days after advertising the auction she was required to wait 15 days. She did the same thing to me after she wrongfully fired me cause i asked to many questions she served me a 5 day eviction even though our contract stated 60 day notice. she then trumped up some bogus charges saying that I spent expense checks she gave me without her authority. she lied to the police and the unemployment office. she had been doing this for 26 years and no one was going to get in her way. this woman has turned my life upside down and the scariest thing is her husband is an attorney so this is a dual team of tax invasion wrongful conversion and the list goes on.

During the pandemic is about 10 months after I just opened my company and it was the worsted 4 months of my life The shutdown wiped out 90% of my customers since I do commercial refrigeration on restaurants and at the same time well make a long story short I ended up getting evicted out of my condo because my landlord's husband died and she claimed to have no reals to go not for non-payment mind you. Same thing happened to my office that I was renting for my company and I was also buying storage units at the time and selling the items from a second office that I leased from them but because one of the units had a bed in it they tried to claiming I was living in my office even though my girlfriend and I had a apartment at the time so I quickly had to move everything from my condo and my both my offices and rent a second storage unit at Trojan Storage in Everett Washington. I had already had one unit there and never had a problem with them but I also was unaware they got new management I at least a 12x20 big unit that I can drive up to so I can put my company stuff in there have easy access to it and set up parts and materials for the next day so my guys can pick them up in the morning but also have enough room to put some of my personal stuff in the back corner for now I got the unit and it wasn't on special it was just a regular $240 a month for the year I had the thing for one month and the company doubled my rent to $450 yeah $475 sorry. They also raised the rent on my unit up top that was $120 a month they raised it $10 to $130 so when I confront them about it they tell me that the unit was on special for the month and that's the normal rate so I pulled up the paperwork for my other unit that I leased that was actually on special when I rented it and proved to them that they're lying to me and they said that there's nothing they can do that I'm welcome to move my stuff somewhere else if I can't afford it and mind you this is the middle of the pandemic I wasn't able to get any help because I was only open for 10 and 1/2 months before the pandemic shut down and you had to be open for a full year before you could receive help as a business owner I lost my home I lost my offices and now it's about ready to lose everything I owned plus all of my parts that I spent thousands of dollars on stocking up for my company and parts that customers had already paid for that were in there but I was even allowed to enter the property because I was locked out for being a week late and after that every single month by the time I paid it my next bill was due locking me out again this went on for about 4 months I saw the street bike I sold my Audi I had one of my good friends help me out to pay it off and I still ended up losing it to them I asked them for an extra week and they said no it was auctioning October 12th 2022 well here we are a year later I've never received any paperwork saying how much it sold for how much I owed still where my paperwork on my photos and my company paperwork went none of that stuff I'm wondering if they did something illegal and if they're still sitting there on it waiting for a statute of limitations of some sort or if they were perfectly legal in doubling my rent like that with no reasoning in the middle of the pandemic like seriously the moratorium was in place for residential people and everything and I just got shafted every which way.

Today my storage was auctioned and I bought it but they should have never put it in auction I had to claim against them because the rats were eating all my stuff they never followed up with me I got into a car accident I was rear-ended by a drunk driver I haven't been able to work I had no money coming in I lost my home I lost my storage I lost everything I own and that was a no fault of my own after calling them numerous times asking them please to wave some of the late fees or something until I can get on my feet or get some money to pay them and they wouldn't wait they just put it into auction so they didn't work with me they didn't try to take off any late fees or anything and now I bought the ox or I bought the storage and yes they're letting me get it and I have less than 24 hours to empty it and they want $100 deposit to clean it out and it makes no sense because I have the money to pay for the auction but I don't have the money for deposit so now I have no way to get the stuff they're making it hard on me and I am doing it all with broken ribs and a broken sternum and haven't been able to do anything I can't work I can't do anything and so you know I just think it's very not very humane I guess I would say it's no compassion no no nothing for someone circumstances that somebody's life in there somebody's whole stories in there their kids it's not like you want to go through a hardship or financial problems it's not like you asked for that either you put it in there and and we're trying to save your stuff as it was obviously cuz you moved out of something so if you're already got issues and then something else happens and then you don't have the money to pay that I mean don't people have any hearts anymore do they not have any compassion for circumstances might be beyond your control at the moment like I don't have a problem paying for my storage but right now I have no way to pay it I'm I'm literally without anything I lost my car I lost everything I own and my home and I was hit by a drunk driver and I'm injured on top of it do you know what kind of stuff that causes and now there's limit issues at the insurance company for the car so like I said things are beyond your control have some heart have a little bit of caring in you you mean give back that's their whole life

So many of you are upset that your things were auctioned off without your knowledge, but then you state that you had moved. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to keep your address current with the storage facility. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to pay the bill, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to keep track of things that are important to you. You all sign contracts with the rules and policies stated. Take responsibility of yourself and your actions and inactions !!

I too just lost so much memories my storage was 90% full of clothes pictures and memories that can't be sold . When I asked about the auction and how it works the manager told me she couldn't disclose that information even though my friends name was the primary on the account . So I had every right to find out how to buy the storage she just continued to tell me any information . I don't think it's right that she kept me from buying my memories back and we all knows what is henna happen to it all end up in the trash this all happened on the 18th of oct.

My ex-husband and I had a storage unit at the UHaul off Woodmen in Colorado Springs, CO. We had this unit for about a year or so. At the time we were going through a separation so there was a lot going on and I only briefly read the same email I have received previously so I just ignored it thinking nothing of it. I should have read all of it because come to find out laws had changed and we were never notified by UHaul of the new change until I got the email that our unit had been auctioned off. No call, no email, no letter about the change. I wasn't even in the same state any longer. I had moved months prior to the auction so I wouldn't have known. I felt this was illegal because we should have been notified by UHaul of the change.

My unit is set to auction off October, 10/14/2023 @4. I have been behind on payments, so in their right, I understand they have to auction off my unit. My problem is, I have very important and cherished family photos and letters from my Grammy in there that I just can't loose. They have no value, so they would be trashed and I don't want that. I have tried to reach a settlememt/agreement with the facility owner to no avail. The reasons I fell behind is due to unforseen hardship. I have a boyfriend that was helping me with payments, but then the facility got new owners and raised the price to more than double what I was paying. My bf lost his job, thus making it to where he could no longer afford to help me even with his new job. He has just enough for his car payment. I am disabled and unable to work to pay what I owe, and I have no family to ask for help from. My plan was to get even and move put of the unit but that alone costs even more money that I don't have and have absolutely no way of obtaining, so I didn't move out and debt continued to add up (random added fees, and upping the price whenever they feel like). I am now set for it to auction but I am in desperate need of my family photo album, loose photos and my letters from my Grammy. I feel as though they should have no problem letting me obtain those things before auction. But the thing is I have no keys (I lost them, and my unit is locked, locked.) I would need a manager or owner to unlock it and let me get those things but with how the communications have been with them, I don't see them being polite enough to do that. I need help, please!

First of all I feel like an idiot for trusting my ex boyfriend, who got me a storage under HIS name. I was not aware tit meant that ALL my life long property automatically becomes the renters property and lawfully own all my belongings. So, I was told my management. So, Just because i set down my boxes of property placed in a 10x15 metal box, in a Public's Storage property, that means... I just gave away my life earnings to them and the renter, Even if a scenario like mine occurs?

The situation: I paid my ex boyfriend for the storage rent. Which, I again should of done it myself online , now that I know . ..

after each payment, He did a chargeback every month on his bank account. Which got him kicked out of the unit. They told him you can come back only one day and get your property then your lease is over. But only Once you pay the chargeback fee first, He paid and He told me to come meet him on a different day and He went 2 days before me and did chargebacks on every month after that. Which amounted to over $800.After he told me he already went,
I went to the Whatney, Irvine Public Storage. I showed the manager my photos that I had taken in the unit of all the property I owned for proof the property is mine. She said no., I cant look or go in .He has to be here.

2 Weeks go by and My EX got arrested, in jail for something else.
I call the Public Storage Manager, (whom is one of the rudest people I have dealt with).

I said to her, "okay my EX is in jail, can i pay the whopping $860 so I can get my stuff out???
She said No.

I said: I see its going for auction and was first posted for auction on August 17th, now it changed to August 24th, 2023.

She said yes,

I said: so that means I have to bid on my own stuff to get it back..

she said no you cant.

I said its not under name.

Manager- Only a special group of people can bid on it)..

Manager seemed surprised and states, only a certain group of people can bid on the storages.you have to be a member and go through a process etc.
Me: are you saying, I cant bid on the online storage treasures website to bid on my property in the ex's unit?
Ive been registered on that site for awhile. Manager: uh then yes you can.
I found that convo kinda Strange or i am overanalyzing. her tone was as they did not want me to.

WELL, Hopefully I win the bidding on Unit with my property. Are they going to pull any strings ? When I go and get my property and say they are items missing (not saying it was the ex or not) is public storage responsible if I have proof of before photos of what was in their and noticed anything taken out of their? Is there lawsuits? Conversion?
Thanks
thankyou

I usually do not comment on things like this unless it’s a good review I’m leaving the company.. however for Public Storage.. I will make an exception. Tried to contact the site managers but was always playing phone tag. When I did talk to her, I tried to explain my circumstances and to be open with them… well, I was harassed afterwards. Call after call asking when I was going to pay.. (I was 1 1/12 months late.. the late fees were outrageous!!!) I thought they had to give notice if so many days before they actually hold the auction.. nope I was wrong. Got an email saying my items were sold today. I will never do business or recommend them to anyone!

My wife and I put some of our stuff in storage about a year ago we kept up-to-date on the payments. We went to make a payment this month because we were getting ready to move. We were two days behind at the time and we were moving that Saturday they informed her the unit had already been auctioned off, I told her to tell the yacht called the auctioneer. He told her some yada yada story and the story stuffs gone that can’t be the way it goes from what I’m reading with all the laws and stuff. They can’t just take our stuff and sell it when we are two days behind and then not even try to help us retrieve our stuff just throw us off blow us off , I hope there’s someway to get help our family heirlooms everything anyone is going through this knows what I mean. It’s ridiculous. It happens in every form of business. These people just take take and take. , and what’s the person like me or us supposed to do about it when we’re barely scrapping to get along as it is ridiculous

My sister died on Jan 1, 2023. As I was going through her paperwork I noticed a bill she had from Public Storage from 2017 which I had forgotten that she had a storage unit.
I am putting a complaint in about Diane Cruz, district manager of Orlando and also Karen, property manager who will not give me her last name along with Amy who works at 4801 S. Sermeron Blvd Orlando, Florida. I had called the main number in California to complain to Karen about how she had no clue what she is doing and California customer service said that Diane Cruz District Manager will get back to me in 24 to 48 hours. I had never heard from Diane Cruz, I have been waiting since around Feb 20, 2023 till now March 9, 2023.
I had called Public Storage on Jan 4, 2023 I had spoken to Karen and had asked if there was a storage unit under my sister’s name and I was told by Karen there was and I had asked what I needed to do since my sister had passed away. I was told by Karen, property manager, which I needed to send a death certificate. I had told her that I was waiting for the State to send me the Death Certificate. I had told Karen as soon as I get the Death Certificate I will call back to find out what I need to do. Karen told me that I needed it to be notarized, I was assuming that the death certificate itself had to be notarized and that was the end of the conversation. Karen had never told me that Jan was paid. I was assuming that it was not paid and all that Public Storage needed was the death certificate.
I had called on 2/1/2023 and talked to Karen. I had asked how come I had never received a bill in the mail under my sister’s address. I was told by Karen they do not send bills out. I had asked her how I would have known if she had a storage bin if she does not get a bill by regular mail. She kept on saying they do not send bills out and it is only through email or text. I had told her that this was not fair on the relative, how would they know if they had a unit and they passed on then all her belongings go up for action without notice. I had asked her if I can get a copy of the bill for what my sister owes and she said she does not send bills out. Karen said I had until Feb 28, 2023 which I was assuming that the storage was paid up till then. I had asked Karen if the bill is past due, don't you send a late notice and Karen said no they do not send any notice by regular mail only thru email and I asked her what do you do if the person dies, she could not answer me but kept saying thru email or text. She never mentions how Feb was not paid.
On 2/1/2023, I had called another number 1-800-567-0759 and I had talked to a woman and asked her if I could get a copy of my sister’s bill to look over since she had passed away. She said I had to go into my account by email or text. I had explained to her I was calling in regards to my sister’s death and I was not able to get into her account. She kept on saying the only way I was able to check was to go into her account under her email or by text. I told her I don’t know my sister's password so how would I be able to get into her account. The woman kept on repeating herself that I was not getting anywhere with her.
I had called Feb 20, 2023 to let Karen know that I had received the death certificate to find out where to send it. Karen told me that I needed to have the Death Certificate notarized. I had no idea what she was talking about when it had the approval stamp of New York. She told me that I needed to go to another Public Storage by myself and ask for Death paperwork for Florida. I had asked Karen if she could email the paperwork and she said no. Karen gave me the Legal Department phone number 866-247-6620 which is not a Legal Department number it is just the regular customer service phone number for Public Storage. I had no idea why she was giving me the phone number for the Legal Department when she was telling me to go to the Public Storage. Karen kept on saying I had till Feb 28, 2023. When you talk to Karen she never makes sense, I was trying to find out if the units need to be paid and all she kept on saying I had till Feb 28, all I wanted was a straight answer She keeps repeating herself and would not listen to what I had to say if they need to be paid and if I can get a copy of a bill. Thinking I had 8 more days left to go into the units and retrieve my sister’s belongings since Karen keeps saying I had till Feb 28, 2023. Since I am in New York I was going to send my niece Carolyn since she lives in Orlando. I had asked Karen if there was an emergency contact on the paperwork, Karen said there was no emergency contact on the paper.
On Feb 20, 2023 I had called the so called Legal Department which there is no such department when I had called. I had talked to a woman and I told her what was the problem I was having in Florida with the units not being paid since my sister died and that I wanted to talk to someone over Karen. The women at the main number in California told me that the payment did not have to be paid since my sister had died and they will squash it and I will be able to enter the units. She also said that a District Manager will contact me in 24 hours. I had called Karen back and told her that I had called the number she had given me and they said since my sister died I did not have to pay for the units. Karen then told me that I owe for Feb $1,084.08. Karen never mentions that I need to pay for Feb. $1,084.08 when I had called her on Feb 1, 2023. Karen did not want to hear what I had to say about what the people in California told me.
I had called back the number 866-247-6620 and had talked to a man and he had also said they will squash the payments due to my sister’s death. I wanted to double check to see what the first women had told me if the payments were going to be squashed. I called Karen back and told her again what the people in California had told me and Karen did not want to listen to what I had to say. I had asked Karen if she could call that number that she had given me to double check what they had told me and she said NO! I had asked Karen if I can talk to someone higher up and she said she will email the District Manager.
Feb 26, 2023 I called again the California phone number and I had talked to a different women and told her the same story and she also told me to hold on she was going to talk to her supervisor and when she got back on the phone she also said that once I bring in the death certificate into a Public Storage store the payments will be squashed.
I had called on Feb 26, 2023 and left a message for Karen to call me.
Feb 27, 2023 the next day I had brought the death certificate to Norwood, NJ and a man had helped me with the problem. I gave him the death certificate and also the license of my niece to enter the units he had entered the info into the system.
Tuesday Feb 27, 2023 Karen called and told me that I needed to pay for the units and I told her I was told by customer service headquarters in California they were going to squash the bill. Karen kept arguing with me instead of calling California to find out the info. I told Karen I did what you told me to do which was to bring the death certificate to a local Public storage so my niece can go into the unit. Karen said “no” not till the bill was paid and I needed to go back and ask for an affidavit for my niece to go into the units.
I had asked Karen if she had gotten in touch with Diane Cruz and she told me she had emailed her. I had asked for Diane Cruz's phone number but she said she is not allowed to give it to customers.
Karen gave the phone to Amy who works at 4801 S. Sermeron Blvd Orlando, Florida along with Karen. I had asked Amy about the district manager if she can ask her to call me and Amy said there is no reason for the district manager to contact me.
March 1, 2023 left message for Karen that she told the women at Public Storage in Norwood, NJ what form to give me and it was Declaration pursuant to Florida Probate Code Sections 733-735a Probate form for my niece to sign which my niece is not on the Will she is no relation to my sister. I had called Karen and asked her why I would want this paperwork for a Probate for my niece to enter the Unit. I told Karen this is not the right paperwork.
I had also told Karen that I was told by the staff when I went to Norwood in NJ, Nicol told me there was Gray Strait as an emergency contact. I told Nicol wow, I was told by Karen there was no emergency contact.

March 1, 2023 Karen called and I told her it was the wrong paperwork that she had the girl to give me. All Karen kept saying that I had to pay and she kept repeating herself. I told her I am in NY and my Niece is in Orlando Florida, and I wanted my niece to go for me. What paperwork do I need for her to be able to have access to the storage unit? Karen kept on saying I had to pay and I told her I understand that but I want to make sure that my niece has access first. Karen then said she wanted my niece's phone number and I told her no cause I know you plan on talking to my niece to get her to pay and that was not going to happen when it was not her problem and she is no relation to my sister and Karen hung up on me.
March 2, 2023 left another message for Karen with the same problem in the wrong form.
March 2, 2023 Karen called and told me that I need to go to Public Storage again a third time to give a copy of the Will. I told her the paperwork that she told the girl to give me yesterday was the wrong paperwork for my niece to fill out that she is not on the Will. I got mad at Karen on the phone and I said to her, what is it going to be tomorrow, I had a lot to do since my sister died. I don’t have time to keep going to Public Storage. Karen said she can only do one step at a time. The woman does not know what she is doing. Someone needs to train her how to handle paperwork, not that the person has to keep going to Public storage to do each step. Yes, I lost my temper, going to Public Storage three times because the woman does not know her job and I have to waste my gas and time. I had words with her and she hung up on me.
March 3, 2023 Went to Public Storage to give a copy of the Will so Karen can have it for me to do the next step. Public storage was closed and called Karen from the car to let her know I had tried to give a copy to Public Storage but they were closed. I went home to see if there is another Public Storage close by so I can bring them a copy for them to send to Karen.
March 3, 2023 I had called 201-350-5424 and waited on the phone to talk to a girl to transfer me over to a supervisor Latisha who called Public Storage in Norwood which was not open during their hours 9:30 to 6:00 a.m. Time now is 11:30 am. Latisha had emailed them and told them to call me so I can bring a copy of the Will to them to send to Karen.
March3, 2023 went to Norwood to give the Will, Nicol called and talked to Karen, the District Manager is supposed to get back to me when they approve it. I asked Nicol how long it would take . She said a day to two. I told Nicol when I talked to Karen she told me it could take up to a week or more for them to approve it cause it had to go to their legal department.
March 4, 2023 I had talked to Karen and I asked how come the District Manager never called me after 4 days. Karen told me that I need to write a letter for Carolyn to go into the unit. Karen never likes answering questions. I can guarantee that Karen never sent the email to the District Manager, Diane Cruz. I am sure Karen knows why because she knows she does not know her job and is afraid of getting reprimanded . Strange how I got approved in one day from the District Manager which I assumed was Diane Cruz.
March 5, 2023, Nicol called and told me that I was able to go into the unit and to come in and sign a paper for Carolyn to go into units.
March 5, 2023 I was told by Karen that I need to write a letter with all the information on it. I had asked Karen how come Norwood, NJ does things differently and seems more efficient and never has a problem with them. She was not able to answer me and she was abrupt and nasty like always.
March 5, 2023 I had received a call from Amy at 407-545-2547 asking for payment. She was very nasty. Was trying to tell her nobody last month had called me to let me know that the rent was due. Why all of a sudden I am getting a phone call to let me know. She was not even able to talk right. She was stumbling all over her words then she said she had to go cause a call came in, did not hear the phone ring on her end. Told me she was writing all notes down and I told I was too. I had asked her again when the District Manager was going to call me, she said there was no reason either. I am guessing Karen never sent the email to the District Manager Diane Cruz.
March 6, 2023 went to sign up Carolyn for the bin in Norwood had no problem.
Nicole and the rest of the staff were easy to deal with. they knew what they were doing with no problem, in Norwood, NJ.
I suggest that Karen and Amy should take lessons from Nicol and the staff in Norwood, NJ.
Diane Cruz, I would say her also but I think Karen never sent her the email.

Because of Karen, District Manager, and your staff in Californian’s has the lack of knowledge of procedure what to do I had to incur charges from Feb Jan 4, 2023 till March 3. Not one person was able to guide me the right way that I had made so many phone calls telling me what I needed to do correctly the first time. You can make three calls and get three different answers at the same place. Seems to me the only people who had knowledge were Norwood, New Jersey.
You have two incompetent people, possibly three Diane Cruz that work for you. Karen in Orlando has no clue what she is doing and I wasted 2 months when it could have been taken care of back in Jan. and just waited for the Death Certificate. Amy was very rude when I called, Amy picked up the phone and saw my name. She made a comment saying “OH MY GOD IT IS HER AGAIN.” I had talked to Amy and she would laugh, she thought this was a funny situation. She told me she had to put me on hold. I was watching the clock which was about 5:45. I waited until it was getting close to closing time at 6:00. I knew what she was doing. Amy never had gotten back on the phone. It was after 6 p.m. I was going through bad times knowing my sister was murder and had to deal with the sheriff and detective. It was not a normal death.
I used to work with my ex-husband with Duffy Movers, which is over 50 years in business. Sometimes they would rent storage units. When I talk to my nephew I am going to let him know what I have been through with Public Storage and hope he will never use them. There is always a meeting for moving companies every month and I am sure if that word gets out about Public Storage, how your staff is not able to run the business the right way, I am sure they will not use Public Storage. I have seen many lawsuits when I had researched Public Storage.
My sister was paying from 2009 till 2022. You can give people a break when there is a death in the family. By the way I had also used the same location when I had moved to Fla and had units for several years.

Auction is on March 23, 2023

I have paid my storage units very very late but I made the payment before they had a chance to auction off my belongings. This has happened two or three times and every time the storage facility cuts my lock off early preparing for auction or I'm assuming they do this to asses what I have for there own interest first before auction..well then I make the payment and they make me also purchase a new lock. Does this seem like it's necessary or ethical. I'm just wondering if someone is doing something there not supposed to be doing at my expense. I just paid 500 dollars in monthly rent plus lien fees and late fees and your going to charge me for the lock that was prematurely cut off before the last day I was given to make the payment? If anyone could just tell me the reason that it is necessary I'm all ears.

I've had the same unit for 11yrs and no problem what do ever. Until AAA storage bought it back in July of 2022. They say I was behind on payment but I have every one of my receipts to prove I'm not. they sent me a letter saying I owed 105 dollars I told them I would be in to take care of it even though I had paid it I didn't want to lose it. the next day I went down to take care of it and it had jumped up to over $200 just over night. They sent it to auction and I have lost everything I had! From pictures to childhood ideams, my son's stuff from his birth plus stuff that was my grandma and other things that can't b replaced. It only meant something to me. I need help please...

I was evicted at no fault of mine. A so called friend rented a storage unit that was to small. I went to the unit with him that day. He found a bigger one put some stuff in it. He Said woukd call the next day let them know and pay the difference. He called but did not pay anything. He went to jail the same day rental assistance put me in a home ordered by the judge. When I called a man saying he was the manager said just come get it. When I tried to a woman saying she was the manager Said no you can not get it. I paid 75 dollars after being told they would switch to my name so rental assistance could pay. The lady would not let me look in it. I did not know if this person was trying to steal my things or what. They say is a sticky situation it is going to auction I was told today. I am not on it nor is he. They said I can't bid it is their choice but will put it on his credit. I am very confused by their actions. Have not received buy one letter from them. They have not informed of any auction till today I called today I got a job wanting to pay. They refuse to work with me. I asked could i find out who purchased it? I have the other part of the sectional. Their is a old recliner my husband passed away in my kids are upset it will be gone. I asked could I pay when I get paid? Nope! I need help

My Dad died December 2nd 2016 from Parkinson's disease, my son died May 4th 2019,and Mom died May 21st 2021 from covid19 virus, pneumonia and bleeding ulcer in her stomach. Then I got evicted from our house of 16 years and during this time, I shut down and told my family I couldn't afford to pay full rent. So I lost alot at my house and mice ate and ruined alot of stuff and what I put in the storage units was all I've got to my name and important papers and bibles and stuff. I'm begging you to help me get my stuff back. And no body would help me make payments on the storage units , Sheryl Fisher

I was planning to pay my storage off, empty it and go through my things. The storage closed down with no way to pay or contact them. When they got a hold of me in October 2021 they said that they were now taking payments. I had the storage since 2013 and was hoping they would work with me to get the balance down. They eventually sent a letter in August 0f 2022 with the date of auction. I got a call form them 2 days in a rowan the end of October 2022 saying that my storage was still there and asked I could make a payment. I paid $100 and set up a payment plan to get the balance down. The very next morning she called back to tell me that the storage in fact gone and she would cash app me payment back to me on the 10- 11 of October 2022. I was told they closed down for complications from a birth but checking online said a bit different. As of last July the company was changing ownership. Should they be able to just take payments on a business they no longer own and can they just disappear for 2 years with no info only to hit you with outrageous charges while you are trying to reco er form the pandemic? The lady told me the new people didn't want to give her any info and I was wondering how she was just taking payments and the business is not yours anymore.

My storage unit was auctioned off three bedroom house with her stuff a lot of personal things my kids things August 22nd I got a notice of the auction on August 24th I had some financial issues when I called and try to make a payment you will not accept partial payment. Continue been crying for days. Filing this depression don't know what we're going to do I just don't see how it was legal we also had the wrong address on the paper never received any letters calls mail nothing just an email two days after the auction. When I had been late one month I called but I can finally get through which took multiple times they wouldn't accept partial payment and the gentleman told me don't worry I'll get plenty of letters and calls and it would take a lot of time before that would happen specifically he said over a year's time the unit was three to four months past due I suffered serious financial and she was I also had covid 19. 3 months later when I got on my feet and had the money turns out everything was awesome 2 weeks prior so I went and dug through my emails I found one email for some reason I didn't receive that was sent to me two days after the auction for me my stuff had already been sold that was the only notice I got. Also when I initially put my stuff at that life storage in Clearwater on McMullen Booth road had the wrong address which I didn't realize until I got the email the auction that already taken place the address was wrong I never got a phone call piece of mail or anything at that matter I spiral into a deep depression we have nothing now my kids are devastated when I asked them or contact information of the buyer they can do maybe nothing for me I was only able to claim the overage which is nothing compared to cash value and the priceless sentimental value. Almost feel like I was taking advantage of. when I called after my things were sold they had no information they couldn't tell me anything I had to wait the next day to speak with a different manager also had no notes or information they know who I am when they took my address they never used my ID they must have entered in the computer with a thought I said the address I gave him was across the street it was 1530 10th Street South they put 1530 Penn Street South which I obviously didn't notice until I got the lean auction August 24th and the auction took place on the 22nd their words they well you know what I don't have any information here on you and I don't know much about auctions you'll have to call back tomorrow and talk to his manager. And he was stuttering and really couldn't tell me anything either except for oh you get the overage we still have nothing now very unprofessional. I also thought it was weird that they didn't know what address they needed from me when I tried to give them the address on my ID which was the place I was moving out of. they didn't want that I wasn't sure where I was going so I gave him my business address they had wrong if they would have just sent it to the address on my ID it would have forwarded i to my new address I feel like I was scammed and taking advantage of. He said the person that when the auction thought he seen gun cases so he drove up a little bit and laughed like everything was okay now I didn't have any gun is relevant to me anyways also when my girlfriend paid the last payment cuz I was sick the guy said you're paying for your boyfriend's storage unit like he was confused she yes why tells her because someone that looks like you should have to pay for anything. I thought that was a little unprofessional at least definitely sexual harassment. How can this even be legal. Especially when they told me I had plenty of time . The person that told me that is the same person that told me he didn't know much about auctions and he had no information on me to call back and talk to a manager the next day but when I talked to him he seem to be sure that I was good and my stuff wouldn't be sold for a long time and I would get plenty of notice and letters which I didn't completely devastated my kids kids can't focus in school and they're being teased. How can this I'm having is there anything I can do it here in the state of Florida.

My dughter's father, Paul Thompson, was killed in Phoenix in September 2021. We were very close. He made me next of kin as he is from california estranged from his family. I was his emergency contact if need be, by for instance hospitals (he had diabetes and was treated regularly) or for any other emergency. My information is in his wallet (which disappeared at the scene when he was found dead), and also on pages and pages of documents in his storage (which I told the storage lady who said she wasn't allowed to go in, and I am also as his contact with his disability, which he collected becasue he was permanently disabled. But I wasn't next of kin. I had to wait a few months until I was able to start the paperwork to become his next of kin/executor in order to get his things out of the storage but it took a very long time and the storage auctioned off his unit. I do have a letter now naming me as his next of kin. It took so long becasue I had to wait until someone from his family in California responded to the City morgue and relinquished their rights to him and designate me as next of kin. There was a specified amount of time they had to wait. Then when they sent him to the mortuary to be creamated I was told they had a waiting period to get a response from his family in California also. I was in regular contact with both the City morgue and the mortuary but it was a protocal that took time, there was nothing they could do to speed it up. This was at a very high peak with COVID19, which I sufferred through twice with all this going on. To top it off, I was operating in a state of shock as not only was Paul gone, but my best friend/ex-fiance, Richard Foerstner, who was also Paul's best friend, died just 7 days later I came to find out, from complications to his cancer from COVID19, that he had just completed chemotherapy and was beating the cancer. This was my daughter's two young sons grandfather, who Paul and Richard were our only family in Arizona. We were all very close. I found out about Paul Thompson the day Richard Foerstner died. I was with Richard hours before he died and then took the bus to Pauls house to tell him about Rick. Paul and his roommates had been evicted from his house as there was a red notice on the door. In the effort to contact Paul via Facebook is when I found out Paul had died exactly one week before. On his facebook site a girl that he was apparently with the day before his body was found in an alley asked if anyone knew of any family members because she had quite a bit of money in his wallet and his keys and phone, I did contact her and she said she had his storage keys and gave me the name of the storage but then didn't want to give me his personal belongs because she didn't have documentation that I was his next of kin. Then I came to find out she took these items off his dead body before the police got there. The police found out who he was by his DNA at the morgue. I immediately called the storage that day and told them Paul had been killed and to please secure the storage because this girl had his keys and what should I do to get his things. She said I would need some document that I was next of kin/executor. No other direction than that. So I began the process of making tons of calls and sending emails to his family in California to no avail. I couldn't get the document right away becasue again, the City morgue had to wait for his biological family to contact them first and reliquish their rights to him and assign me. My hands were tied. I told the storage lady I would pay the storage but I was not working, my fiance is on a fixed income, and the storage was already 2 months behind but that I was trying to get the money together. She knew I was in the process of getting the paperwork resolved and then when I called one day to discuss the storage and to just touch base, maybe two weeks later, and to let her know I still hadn't gotten the paperwork for next of kin/executor because Paul's family still hadn't contacted the City morgue yet, she told me his unit was auctioned off just 2 days before I called. She said tried to contact me but my phone was off. Then she said she left a message. That didn't make sense because yes my service was suspended but I dis get voicemails and I do not have a message on my voicemail from her AT ALL. I had other voicemails that were left from that time my service was suspended though. She basically said it was my fault for not getting back to her sooner. I know she had my address becasue she had to give me the address to the storage facililty near me where I said I would go to pay the storage fees becasue I don't drive. I was in contact with her regularly but was also dealing with losing Richard Foerstner at the same time. Paul was in between residences when he was killed and was in the process of getting an apartment so every single belonging he had was in the storage. Hence the large amount of money on him to put down a deposit. Paul was a computer programmer, went to ITT to study Computer Fraud Alert, something on those lines, and wanted to work for the FBI. He had quite a bit of expensive computer equipemnt, monitoring equipment, he had antique collections, basically belongings that could fill a one bedroom apartment if not a two bedroom. He even had two cars that were never located. Paul is survived by my youngest daughter, 13 years old, Annabelle Burchett, and an 8 year old son, Caleb, through another woman, who we had a good relationship for our childrens sake, who I did contact after Paul's death but we never were able to get very far and as far as I know I don't believe she pursued anything with the storage or anything else. I asked the storage lady if she could get a message to the people who bought the unit and have them call me that this is a mistake and she said she would try. I asked her what the storage sold for. She couldn't tell me. Paul was a very sweet father and was always buying things for my oldest and youngest daughters and Caleb, for when he saw them next. His things are very personal and it eats me alive, I am extrememly traumatized that his things are gone. Things he would want his daughter and son to have. I would like to get some kind of reimbursement from the storage facility to set up a trust for Annabelle and Caleb, or if I could get any of his belongings back, to get some closure. My oldest daughter was 5 months pregnant at the time so it was a very difficulet time, especially for her, as she was very close to Paul, he was her stepfather as her father died of a heart attack when he was 40 years old, she found him at aThis isn't just going to go away. The baby was born in February, 5 months after Paul's death. I have the letter from the City of Phoenix Indigent Deparetment (not sure their correct name) dated and Paul died on September . That is days I was given to get the next of kin/executor document in order to be able to get in the storage. I was on the phone regularly with the City morgue, the mortuary, and the City of Phoenix Indigent Department, as well as the storage facility. There was nothing I could do to speed this up. I am shocked the storage facility had no empathy to our situation. Paul actually got creamated 6 months after he died for just the fact everyone was waiting for his "family" in California to contact them, which they never did. It is heartbreaking. The worst of it is not just the storage, or the fact they never contacted Arizona regarding their son/brother/uncle, even through my attempts to contact them for all those months, but I still do not have his ashes because noone is returning my calls or emails, which I also have copies of, from just recently too. I don't even know where he is at this moment and I want to put him to rest in the trees in Flagstaff. I have contacted the Detective regarding any kind of investigation inot his death and it took three months for her to call me back. She said the case was closed because there was no next of kin to follow up. I will be reopening this case. I thank you for taking the time read this and hope that you will be able to help me. Sincerely, Arianne Burchett **I want to add that my youngest daughter is his biological child, and that she is under 18, and adopted by my mother, I couldn't go that next of kin route. And I lost touch with his youngest son's mother as well. Please contact me via email at ari.burchett@yahoo.com and leave your number and I will return your call right away. We would like to put Paul to rest and have his children have something to remember him by and not let him just slip away. If you could also maybe direct how to get his ashes I would appreciate it. Thank you again.

My storage unit is scheduled to be auctioned off next month.....
....I have an urn with the ashes of my deceased best-friend still in there in need of being returned to his widow....
...is there a requirement for an "irreplaceable item" to be returned to its recipient that is mandatory in the state of MARYLAND..... and does cremated remains fall under that category of such items??

Hello,
Is there a statute of limitations in California that dictates the amount of time I have to sue a storage facility after an improper sale of the storage unit?

My unit is to be auctioned tomorrow, 08/24/2022. Prior to the account going into delinquency I attempted to move my stuff out of the storage, however the office was locked due to them being short staffed. After that time I became really ill and was not able to make the payments. I went to the office and ask if it was possible to just take one small box of personal items..but I was told no. I don't understand how this could be legal?

Everything I owned was auctioned off due to non-payment, and I didn't get a email or notice that it was being auctioned. I was even allowed to make a partial payment 4 days after it was sold.
Please help.

So when I was evicted from my that was rent to own. The landlord couldn't believe how much I was going to sale my house for. All I know next is im being evicted and served papers by constable Mitch Baker, this was back in Feb 2022 this is when it snowed so I call constable Baker and he said we can do this Monday. Well when I called the landlord to tell him he was mad!! The landlord also said I missed 10 payments. I told him no way! Then he proceeds to tell me not all at the same time. I really don't see how he can do this! We were trying to get stuff out of the house then Mr Baker started yelling at me telling me to get out. The landlord thought it was funny. My landlord put my stuff medical record, birth cert and my grandfathers ashe and I'm disabled. So we were rushing to get our stuff in a storage. Well being on a fixed income it was hard for me to make the payments. I called tried to work something out with them. Their working out was 391 to vacate immediately or 425 and could keep my things there.i told her let me see what I can do. She told me my unit wouldn't go up for auction til that Monday. When 8 called that Monday she said my unit was already auctioned. That someone bought it. I flipped a lid on this lady.. then she calls back a couple of days later and said they never came back to get the rest of my stuff. When I spoke with the regional manager she claims they did every thing right. (We never received a call or letter.) The regional manager said they would wave all the fee and I could get my things for 300. I was so excited I was like ok. So my question would be how can it be auctioned off ( free up storage got the money) Now they want to sale my things back to me. This is double jeopardy to me! How can they do this!?! What in that storage is all I got!! Please help!!

I just paid for a Storage Unit and my Payment is not due til August 1st, 2022. I was still in the process of putting my belongings in the Unit. The Owner of the Storage 'Drop and Roll', in West Jefferson, Hwy 163? got angry at me and ban me from the premises. He called a Police Officer to tell me I had to leave or be arrested. I wanted to get a few things including my clothes. I realized later (it's a weekend in a small Town) I just put my Rx medicines, Diabetic Machine and supplies (no Rx) and my medicines. My crutches, and a few other important things. I am disabled and there's time's I need them. I am considering of having him Charged with 'Endangerment' if he does allow me to retrieve my belongings, my Rx, ect., and get my money back. I live in North Carolina. I am 66 years elderly and partially disabled some days and really bad off on other days. Doing storage is not easy for me and I feel he could cause me more undue injury on a physical level by all this unnecessary packing, lifting, ect.. I tried to get a Magistrate to get me a Stand-by Order?..called? to get my things but he said there was no such thing that I would have to get a Lawyer to be able to get my things. Seriously? That can't be right. Does anyone one know NC Laws on this type of thing and help a Gal out.
Thanks,
Maya

I guess it went over Howard 5day late fee then (5) more. They can auction my vehicle. Well also i forgot. The catalyct converter got stolen on their property as well. So it’s non drivable. I paid them $100 to chill out so I can figure things out. It’s been 2 days and they are threading to auction it today.

Said this weas in the agreement but it is NOT. They said I have $200 per mon in fees and must pay all month together when that is not true and that was much higher than they are telling me now.

I recently rented a ushual and was so caught up in trying to move I was late on payments. Upon the repo I had all my elderly mothers medical needs in there including, oxygen tank, medicines, paperwork ect. In order to get any of those things out the man's that I needed to pay him $1,000 within 24 hours but then just 30 minutes later lowered me down the street and told him I could give him $400 cash out of the table. How is this legal to do so I have less than 24 hours to get my mother's belongings back we are in the middle of moving you cannot afford in any way shape or form to buy those things again and this will so everleigh affect her health. Please help

My storage unit was cleaned out by the owner of the building that gave it to someone who sells.it on Facebook. I had called his office talked to his secretary said I'd be up there in 3 weeks to make a payment. She marked it down in my fill said it would be fine. When I payed it not even 22ks later went to get some stuff out my unit was completely empty. Went to the office she didn't know anything about it said it wasn't marked in her records as being sold or anything. She didn't know what happened and the owner was out for business meeting but she'd call and see what happened. I never got a response back from them. Plus I found my stuff being sold on Facebook market places. I messaged her she said she burnt pics any papers like birth certificates, social security cards, car titles, marriage license and sold the rest. She also said that it wasn't her problem if I had an issue to take it up with the owner of the building. I'm wondering if there is anything I can do about it.

I just bought a unit 4/13/22 in Granger Indiana. The owner of facility had his own lock on unit and removed it before auctioning the unit....staged just right, but was all Junk. Is this fraud? I have 3 days of emptying junk and want to see if I have legal action against the facility and/or auctioneer.

Am I able to sue the storage company for auctioning my unit. Yes I was late and they had text me saying I was late but to call to make payment. I called them several times and have screen shots of the times I called. They said the bidding was closed on the 5th at 9am but I could pay up til that time. They open at 10am.
I tried to make a payment online and was only able to split the payment on 2 cards. It would allow me to do that and so I attempted to call several times.

I have my whole Inventory valued over 250k. What can I do?

Hi I have a question on whether I can do something about the stores place that is now selling my stuff in at auction and I guess the auction is on the 12th is what I just found out but anyways I had called them about three weeks ago to make a payment because I got a call from Collections and they already sent $140 from them to collections and I had paid that and then I've called them to pay the balance of my locker and they man I spoke to told me that my stuff was auctioned off in February and that there's nothing I could do like he told me that I can't make my haven't like my daughter was here her friend was here and we was on speaker phone this is what he told me and then I get a call like you the following week saying that my stuff up for auction still up for auction and I have till the 12th to pay it and like I had the money when I called them to pay it but I was told it was auctioned off and now they're saying that that person who told me that no longer works with them is there something that I can do

I rented my storage online before moving out of town about a week or so later I received a call saying I had to come in to office to sign paperwork well I can’t I’m 3 hours away and then she said I can’t pay online like I had set up autopay unless I go in . Now my stuff is going to auctioned off . My parents ashes are in there my 10 year old daughters toys clothes everything . We have had to struggle just to keep a roof over our head after me and my husband lost our jobs when covid started spreading? We just now are starting to see daylight and now this .. they have added so many fees there is no way to catch up. I think I want to cut the lock does anyone know how much trouble I will get into? I can’t let my my family take another loss I don’t think we can take another.

I was up-to-date on storage rent and pre-paid for one month ahead as well (specifically so that just in case some unforeseen event might happen in future that prevented me from paying rent on time, I wouldn't have to worry about late fees stacking up & or I would have at least 1 month to get my property out of unit) and owner sold my unit without sending me any of the notices required by state law. He continued to collect my rent payments for 8 more months after he sold my unit (during Covid19 lockdown) knowing he had disposed of my property. Then after 8 months of paying rent for a unit that he had disposed of 8 months prior, he sent my rent payment back to me along with a handwritten letter informing he was returning my rent because he had sold it 8 months prior and that he had already rented the unit out twice since then. I have all the money order stubs from my rent payments proving that I was not behind on rent and was in fact prepaid for one month of rent when he sold my unit. I also have 3 recorded phone calls that he states the date he disposed of my unit on which wasn't even long enough for him to have charged me a late fee for yet. I need to find a case law from a similar court finding to cite in my lawsuit against storage owner. Storage owner just paid someone I know (who was behind on their rent when he disposed of their unit, but because he did not send that person any of the notices required by state law either he was at fault for entering unit illegally) a sum of $8,500.00 to settle out of court for selling their unit without having properly notified them prior to disposing of their unit. He is refusing to even give me back rent for the months I paid for after he had already disposed of my unit.

Even though it has been some time (June 2019), it still doesn't matter what matters is iam literally traumatized (not being dramatic either)! I am literally traumatized by them selling my storage unit for what I had inside that storage unit, ALONG with this manager KNEW I was a flood victim of the 2019 Floods s.d Red Cross & FEMA did not help me & my choldren, so I lost my home of 12 1/2 years. So in tol of lidingy gone to the floods. I now just lost every single memorable item I ever had and along with all my and my daughter's possessions The storage facility unlawfully sold my belongings there was an auction date upcoming, but I went in and made payment arrangements the auction date wasn't until 2 weeks away from when I came into the office there and I went in person and made payment arrangements with the managers brother who also was an employee at that time. I come to discover that At that my belongings were auctioned off six days after the date that I came in but I didn't know of this until a month later a month later they gave me and sent me an email I have never received a bill from them I never received any messages from them I never received anything from them except to the point of them messaging me let me know my stuff got auctioned off a month prior and to get a hold of the district regional manager in which the point or district manager one of the other but in which I did try and contact him but unbeknownst to me I come to find out and this is a year later he didn't even have that position then so and even if he did he'd never got back with me so I don't know if you got fired or what but that's not even the point it took me over a year to finally talk to the the chick who's managing that storage facility in which the point I am traumatized I'm traumatized by it's not the point of materialistic possessions it's the possession of my father and my grandmother are passed away I have not one picture of my dad or my grandma All My children pictures growing up my childhood pictures my father mind you he was born in 1933 his homecoming picture and his shoe shine box my grandfather his old coins my grandmother I don't even they got my daughters both my daughters umbilical cords I would give everything on my possessions to have these things back my God all old memorable things my grandfather's purple heart oh Jesus the thing of the matter is is I had time also when I came in that day to the office and spoke with her brother cuz she was not there he told me that on the auction date if it was being weather-related like it was pouring rain or storming or something like that that I still would be liable for that month but and the day of the auction date it poured for three days straight but that has nothing no bearing of it because they sold it prior to so when I finally did talk to the manager the female and mind you she was a b with attitude she was like well why then didn't you make your payments if you care so much about your storage wait what I'm still the customer I made arrangements with your brother she was like he no longer works here and he wouldn't have done made arrangement first and foremost exactly what I told her I was like you weren't here so how do you know this also I was like so I try to get hold of the district manager couldn't and she's like well he no longer it was in that position then or something of that matter how was I supposed to know that so I was like can you contact she was like well and then she started to say a name like Aaron or Adam or something like air whatever and then stop she's like oh well they don't have they don't keep any you know private possessions or anything I'm like how do you know I was like which goes to say I think she knows who bought the stuff exactly I was like well why don't you try to reach out to them in which then she said that she would and she get back to me on Friday which is like I think it was a Wednesday I called her so to two or three days away I don't know it's Wednesday or Tuesday so with that I was like are you going to call me she's like yes I make sure I give you a call by Friday or on Friday she never called I waited until Tuesday I think Tuesday or Wednesday Tuesday in which I consistently called and left a message and left a message and called to no avail until it was I pretended like I was a customer interested in running a storage unit in which then she then called me back exactly please help me by God's grace I hope you can because this is something in my life it was so hard for me to look up look my mom at the eyes and my children still to this day I can't see other people's pictures because I have nothing along with everything in which I had in that storage facility you can walk not even 5 ft and you already hit at a $5,000 mark please help me thank you. I did this by voice text so if it sounds jumbled please forgive me and I'm not going to grammar and spell check at the moment due to the fact I'm running into another appointment but I do appreciate you and I hope you do get back with me.

I have a storage unit at Public Storage, 4025 E WT Harris, Charlotte, NC. After nine years of my belongings at that facility, I have decided to let the facility auction off my unit, because I am on a fixed income and can't afford to continue paying on the unit. I am not late or behind in my payments and have spoken with the manager at that location regarding this issue, two days ago. He promised to have another manager to call me to let me know the process to auction my unit off. I still have not received a call back. I have tried over and over, left messages with several phone numbers for Public Storage, but no one has called me back. My concern is, letting this go too long and me having to continue paying for the unit. I do not want this to effect my credit and want to do the right thing. Please help.

this is VERY TIME SENSITIVE
STORAGE PLACE VIOLATED CONTRACT 2 HRS AFTER I SIGNED NO ENTRANCE WO ME

THEY LET MY MOVERS I WAS TOLD THIS BC RENTED A VAN FR DIFFERENT LOCATION. I SHHOULD HAVE PREFACED THAT I WANTED 5X5 WASNT available and all I could get was a 10 x 10 but I had to rush over to the store around the corner to get the van before anybody else did so I figured I took the 10 by 10 I also came with a lot from previous storage place and they wouldn't let me use it

WELL the band that I rented, was 2 minutes away. GOT back in time for the movers so when they went back down there I had to move the van so that they could fit in and when I did my mover noticed a puddle and we looked into me and it wasn't tripping out it was pouring the gas and some kind of made shippedplug I called over to the store that I rented it from and the fire department came my movers couldn't what had difficulty working around them so they towed the van away the office manager from the place where I rented the unit who had nothing to do with the ban when she came there just call me I just saw your Movers 30 minutes ago I signed the paper that nobody can go in without me but you let them in without me so the band was towed and my move is not in my unit and we're going to come back later that day as I had to be out by 12 midnight I also have a text for that so I call up and ask when the other van is coming and it's not they have no other one all my stuff my precious stuff that I didn't want the movers to handle in that van and they took it out and left it on the side of the road yes course I have pictures of that as well so I called the movers to ask why they left and they said that they were going to come back later put the key in the key box assistant manager gave thumbs up it's getting later much later this move was slower because of the fire truck from their van so I proceeded to pick up all my stuff out on the street ain't I called the movers one of them had to pick the child up from school and then then going to come back in a couple of hours they got some of my items but not all of them so I called Sandy the assistant manager I've asked you to bring me my key she knew where I lived at the fire department and then she told me she couldn't bring me the key and I said okay hide it somewhere because the movies have to get back in and she did it said she coud not. She was closing early because of her birthday it was about 6 and she was leaving . I. begged her as some big items weren't in storage. I'm on disability for anxiety panic attacks and half my furniture was in my apartment. 11 I called the property manager and explained that the fire truck could I please get it out in the morning no it has to be out by 12:00 midnight somebody's going to come by and do an assessment if somebody's moving in a day so I called the movers and tell them it was a moot point for them to come they couldn't get in and since they didn't bring the van back I had no transportation so a lady with a car from the moving company came down in her car it was storming out I mean we couldn't fit the refrigerator stainless steel or the microwave a lot of my clothes I tried again with the management wrote the email please I just got through a traumatic incident my mother passed away I also called every car dealer to see if I can went to the van they were all closing I had to be out July 31st somebody was coming to make sure so I am critical right now and what did the closest hotel she's going to come back the next day 2 unload a car. I'm losing half my stuff and my mother just passed away and I have no place to go so I called my friend who is also an attorney they couldn't have been any worse Murphy's Law all day Queen the band The Fire Department the key in the lock box violating their own rules of letting somebody in there. No accountability so it was like now about 12 and my attorney did not answer and I left a synopsis of the day by my mother's stuck was taken out of the van and put on the asphalt items that I need it my apartment was only 300 square feet I only needed a five by five they told me they didn't have it so after texting my friend and attorney. A bitmoji on the text and A pill..1 was already devastated about my mom and went to bed so I'm lying there there where on the light storage website that I was at and they did have 5x5. So I'm in the hospital and I called the manager and explains again with the items exam he felt bad but he said somebody came to look it had furniture

1 SO I LOST MOM, LOST A LOT OF appliances ANNNNND NOW AN EVICTION I found a little bit of hotel an extended kind of hotel so I could find a place that was same price range just a little better I stayed there for a year almost until I got assaulted til I found another apt. And then covid hit.,11 there are no open Apartments specially if you have an eviction so what ended up paying over $50,000 in two years but maybe more and I was using my credit cards and my loans and Pisces start to rise a studio apartment 1200 which I couldn't afford.

I COULD NOT FIND.... Tampa Bay has the biggest increase in rent so I knew it would be difficult between my Social Security phone storage I had to eliminate I worked so hard prior so I eliminated my storage that was really hard on the heart but that just things that I figured I could replace them so I told people about the story and they said but they violated your contract I called and I spoke with the district manager who was new and very kind as I bought him a letter and everybody from lifestorage fr executive to ceo. I never did linken nor Twitter and email. I explained I was going through a financial hardship that I was aware that I missed November December and now it's January the district manager was very kind I'm not going to have you pay those months let's just make sure you out of there by I'll give you till January 14 it was already January 1 so I agree I'll be out by February so I'm sorry January 14 I called every Organization for help 2112 disability in aging to all the church is nobody would assist me and now I have to have my things out by the 14th and then I got a reminder maybe he's just throwing that out there there might be a little bit of beer that they violated letting somebody in which catapulted to me having and eviction which state am I record for the rest ofmy. life. Said you needed the space because a lot of people were coming down fr up north. EXACTLY. I mentioned to him about that and he said he knew nothing about it I have all the letters I wrote to corporate and then what's the board of directors I have no family and I'm on disability

Public Storage just auctioned my storage unit without giving me a date of auctioning December after sending me a statement showing what I owed through January 2022. Not only had it been broken into a month earlier and they did not immediately disclose that to me, they had been informed well in advance that my fiance and I were homeless and struggling through the winter, they were also I formed of certain HIGHLY classified military documents inside. My fiance is a veteran and those documents being sold is absolutely unacceptable and we were told by several employees that we would be contacted by someone to work out payments on our past due balance, one of which claimed to be a veteran as well and promised to help us. Prior to the auction, my phone line was shut off and we had to access to email as we were living in a city park out of reasonable walking distance for my disabled fiance to travel. Finally able to check, I received an email stating our unit was sold for $130 on 12/27/2021 that they still want me to pay the remaining balance. I feel I was lied to and that our misfortune of being homeless due to the death of a loved one as well as our struggle to just stay alive have been completely taken advantage of especially considering how rude the staff has been and how intentionally difficult they seemed to make everything during each trip there to include telling us we would be limited to 1 hour each trip no matter what we needed to do because my fiance's REGISTERED service dog violated their pet policy as well as outright being told to leave while reorganizing our belongings because we had been in our unit over 30 minutes. Is there any hope of making this right or at least recovering the most important items they sold?

My mom has a storage bin at Storage King in Phoenix, AZ. It used to be Extra Space. We paid it every month all through the pandemic. We fell behind when we couldn’t find jobs and the PUA stopped abruptly. We asked them to work with us so we could catch up on the passed due payments. The manager, Chance, refused to work with us and instead he wants to sell our stuff. He didn’t even call us til we called him. Then he tried to pass the buck by saying corporate makes the arrangements. He lied. Corporate told my mom that Chance has authorization to make payment arrangements. Infact, We didn’t know the company switched ownership til we went to pay the bill. This is ridiculous. We don’t want our stuff sold. What can we do to keep it from being auctioned off?

Got a hold of the Office and who ever told me my belongings were auction or sold.
I was told the office was trying to reach me.
I believe I should had received a email and a certified letter.
I received nothing. Not even a regular notice in the mail.

You know from reading and seeing the amount of stories that include loss of personal property etc, and the clear disregard of either the state or business comunity and obvious fraud being perpetuated on innocent good folks just trying to keep a sense of dignity & possesions through out this emergency of health and withdrawl of fear ,its a whole industry of deciet theft and greed that knowingly turns a blind eye to this treacherous practice of basic out right theft because its allways some subtrefuge or sneaky act to really just steal anothers private property for gain YOU act like its no big deal oh how unfortunate blah, blah loser well at some point this will be a very real issue for change ,Its happening every day all over the country and its very wrong we should all be secure from this blatant outright wrong practice as its effecting every ones family and freinds

Public Storage auctioned my storage for owing two months when I was attacked and taken to the hospital by ambulance and police. I also paid prior two months but P.S. refused me access and on Easter... I had my book from God that I wrote copyrighted and published. I want it back... The auction was in Allen Park, Michigan at Public Storage around or about 8/25/2015. Please help me get my book back in a suitcase and my hard drive and paintings plus drawings.

My contents were no longer available to me from the Emmet Arkansas storage facility Williams storage on Route 299 and Highway 67 after I contacted the storage unit owner and was told that my things were sold months before with no knowledge to me that my things were up for auction though I understood that I was behind in payment... We were all going through a pandemic and due to job loss and several relocations I finally was able to apply a $200 money order towards my deficit but to no avail. The owner's son answered the phone and stated that my things have been sold months prior when they had never issued out a declaration stating that my things were going to be auctioned. There was nothing in the local newspaper nor the next town over his newspaper stating that an auction was to take hold containing lockers with past due amounts. The things in the locker cannot be replaced like my children's arm ID when they were born... My miscarried baby his items were in that storage locker which are also Irreplaceable... Documents that I can never get back. I just want my things I just need to know where they are so that I can pay the person to give me my things back. This breaks my heart because these things were of value and I did not have the money at the time and to just disregard someone's sacred items without notification is extremely bad business.

Mini Storage of Ridgeland is the company of housed my personal property under a month to month contractual bases starting June 1, 2021, July 31, 2021. In around the 15th July I went to start retrieving my property to move into my new apartment. I rented 2 units which valued at approx. $60,000 of personal property. Come to find out the owner had sold the company and was bought by a corp. business. Im not sure why my 2 units where either sold at auction, which their was no posting of an auction at the time required by law to give notice to the leases. This shouldnt apply to me because I was paid through the end of July 2021.

Bomarc storage took over my storage I had for over a year that I paid faithfully. It was a large unit with all of my life's belongings. It was a struggle to pay them on line and to get in touch with them. I was able to pay 400.00 toward my 600.00 fee. I had 2 units and they were on separate bills. The smallest one I had just got when Bomarc took over. They wouldn't let me go to either unit until I paid the total 600.00. there were false fees on my monthly statements so in reality I had them paid off. After paying the 400.00 and signing that my debit card would be charged automatically every month I thought I was all set. But I called them and was told my units had been auctioned off the day before. This was 28 days after paying 400.00. They said they left me phone messages to let me know. I got no messages and no letters. They sent me a check for 1035.00 about a week later. They said they would contact the buyer and try to get some of my things back. I cannot believe this could happen in America. I had my life's belongings in there. I don't sleep at night. I feel violated. They were rude and couldn't answer why they did what they did. I have proof of all this. I had thousands of dollars worth of items. This was cruel and I'm suffering from this. What do I do? How do I get help with this?

Hi, I ran into financial trouble after losing my employment, I had a storage unit for access goods, I accepted that I was going to default on the unit payments and knew my goods would be sold at auction.
my concern is that a rolex watch was being stored in the unit and the last valuation was around $14,000, I explained to the manager to have the watch independently valued to affirm my beliefs, however they did not do this and the watch went to auction separately and sold for only $900.
legal advice please !!

My friends brother has a storage until, he went missing 3 weeks ago, she called the storage until , they said they will confiscate his until if payment is not made, can they legally take it if he is miissing amd a missing persons report has been filed? They will let her make a payment, but they won’t let her empty it and move it to her house until he is found !?

Is it illegal for them to cutt off your storage unit's lock before it goes up for auction?!

I lost my storage then I went online to the auction and won the auction fair and square but the storage facility said they were not selling it to me for that price. Even though the auction site says you can bid on your own lockers. Is that worth going after them?

I am a manager for a storage facility here in Kansas. We bought the facility from the previous owner in December of 2019. We did a system conversion in January of 2020. We transferred ALL tenant information into our new system. After spending a year weeding out the past due tenants (and there were ALOT) we moved on to vacating abandoned units. One unit in particular, was never entered into the previous system. After doing extensive work trying to locate any information on the unit, as well as leases or looking at the past rent roll, it was determined there was no paper trail so the unit was considered abandoned. After we cleaned out the unit, someone came forward (a current tenant with another unit) asking where her items were. We explained that there was no lease or any type of paperwork for that unit. It was listed as vacant in the system when we did our conversion. This means that the previous manager/owner was responsible for not moving her in or not putting her in the right unit. No letters were sent and no ad was placed because it was considered a "ghost unit" (sometimes people put items into vacant units if they dont want the items). Legally, I was told she can pursue legal action, but would it go towards the previous owner or the new owner? Keep in mind, when we took over the facility, there was no record of a tenant in that unit.

After you have been taken to court by the owners of a Storage Facility, in which we won on every motion, but failed at the trial
as the attorney backed out on a day's notice before the trial, and my husband was forced to defend himself one thousand
miles away by phone, can we now counter sue if we can prove through photos, receipts, phony new "cobwebs" and new
footprints that we have been cherry picked by the owners? If not, can we find out when the auction is, travel that 1000 miles
by car and photograph (tell auctioneer he is also being ripped off, in a way?) what is missing? We had 5100 sq. ft of things
from the home of my dreams after working with my husband and our business partner for decades. Unfortunately, we did
quite well, but a simple one stage lung cancer (never smoked in my life) after only three of 12 years in our home was ruined
for myself and my hubby for these next 15 years due to illness most likely caused by the surgeon who left a plastic pipe
(allergic to many plastics) down my throat far longer than the 17 hours claimed by the Mayo Clinic. Two to three days longer.
Anyway, is there any way of finding which auction house they use so that we may buy back our treasures? Thanks for any
help you can give as we are heartbroken, now living in our old, broken down second home. This happened because our
partner, who lived in the old "maid's room" from time-to-time decided while I tried to recover from pneumonia to bully me into
selling my home and my husband is the type to Oh, well, whatever, and did not bother to even ask me if I wanted to. Even
then as the CEO I could have invested our money (sold for 3,450,000) but they decided to take A YEAR off, which is death
in our business, then the move, I am nearly a broken person with so many different problems I am asking for help from some-
one I do not know. The name of the storage facility is 210 Self Storage in Arcadia, CA 91006. I can be reached at my
husband's email:tommyp1@verizon.net. Please, just some advice. I wish I could give you my number but do not dare. Thanks one more time.

My storage facility in Colorado Springs decided not to renew my month-to-month lease and is denying me access to get my property except through a third-party moving company. I was never behind on payment and I never received an actual contract for my units because I started renting during the lockdown of Covid in the city they live in. At first I was told I could have a third-party come and move my stuff and then my friend showed up to move my belongings they told him that the third-party had to be a legitimate moving company in then they proceeded to bully my friend who also had a unit at that facility that they could they are subject of not having their lease renewed as well due to the fact that they knew me, and personally observed management allowing strangers to go through my stuff while making derogatory comments about me and my family with other customers
What papers can I file with the court to stop this

I fell behind for three months paying my storage and received one letter
From the locked ca mini storage facility in February 18 via email. The statement said I had until the 18th of March at 10am to make a payment or the facility will sell it at a public auction.long story short I wasn't able to get the payment in full until the morning of March 18. I called at 9:38 and wanted to make my payment when the manager said "No it's too late I have people looking at units for the auction and its scheduled for sale today." I called 3 times before ten and a fourth time to let her know I had a letter from her the manager that said I had until 10! At this point in heading down there and in the phone with the police. I arrived there at 10:17 and the auction was finished and my storage was sokd. Cops say get an attorney since this was civik.at that point it wasn't civil it was criminal in my eyes since I comp lied with her letter and tried to pay where I was refused to do so.
There was No specific direction as to how I can pay.
No preliminary notice of Leon sale
No dates and signed Leon sale notice only a blank one
No itemized list
No declaration notice to respond on
No public auction posted that I could find pertaining to my storage
No personal return of any docum ents with my social, address, business forms, client info from my online business. Ect.
This lady has been rude every time I've had encounts with her and she sold my things unlawfully out of spite.me and my 12 year old daughter were forced out of our home of 5 years by a family member that had power of attorney of my grandmother's peoperty. The contents in that storage was all we had after losing our home. My daughter has to move in with her father while I've struggled with an illness from my lupus while living in hotels or my car so my situation was rough and that's no excuse to have when you owed money but I had the money before the deadline and was refused by the manager my payment as she sold all my items. The auctioneer said they don't ever sell anything before 10am because that's when the facility opens their doors so she lied as well when she said they were looking at my unit. Please I need help as soon as possible !!;; It was our life in there.don't have the letter and the time stamped calls as well as the receipts showing I had the money in the bank to pay her.

I have a complaint about a wrongfully auctined off storage unit. It was with Public Storage in Saint Louis, MO. As I understand it, since the company is located in California, I can still be represented.

At the time that my items were auctioned, my unit showed active on their online oatment system. The unit showed and remained active under me for over a month after my items were auctioned.

I had items valued at over $10k in the storage unit, antique furniture, couches, a Mahogany bedroom set from 1940, silverare, Dishes feom Germany from WWII, Corning Wear circa 1960, a piano

They tell me that they sold the unit for $345.00 and that I owe them $20

After how many years of storing my things at EZ Storage, the fees went up did not complained but paid on time. Due to Fraudulent activities the automatic payment has stopped. I went to them gave them a new credit card for payment and to be kept on file, for some reason on the following payments they did not charge my card. As i noticed they were not charging the card I call to figure out what was going on and tom make my payment as this was the 2nd payment that had not gone through only to find our that my entire unit had been auctioned off. My whole event business gone, over $20,000 worth of an investment, GONE. No letter, not email, nothing. They never contacted me. What i would have owed is at best $600 something dollars. This is stilling. EZ Storage needs to pay me back for the content of my storage unit.

Life storage auctioned my two storage units without every notifying me. In Aug 2918 I rented a storage unit from life storage and per the contract I paid the remainder of Aug and Sept was to be free. Well circumstances caused me to need another unit so in sept I rented another unit again unpaid the remaining prorated amount for sept and October was to be free.i fell behind on my payments and attempted to make a partial payment on the two that was denied, attempted to pay the full balance for one and requested I would be able to pay the other unit a little later, that was denied as well. Talking to the rep I found out my units weren't even occupied anymore. One was sold in november and the other in december... so I may not be aware of all the rules pertaining to auctions but I can clearly see that something was terribly wrong. With aug paid up front and sept being free my next balance would be due on october 1.... so my account at kost was 45 days behind and was auctioned without any kind of letter being sent to me or my husband

I've been renting a 9 by 16 from mid way storage in AC, Ca. For over a year & they supposedly auction of my unit Sept 10 2019!? When I initially inquired about renting from them I was informed there was one 9 by 8 storage unit available to rent, first come first serve. Even though I was the first person at the door I was told that they made a mistake & the 8 by 9 unit wasn't done being cleaned out of the previous renter's things & that it would be ready for me to rent in 1 week's time. The owner recommended I rent a larger 9 by 16 unit from them We had a verbally agreed that I would transferrer my things from a 9 by 16 storage unit into the 9 by 8 unit in no more then one week's time. In good faith I rented a 9 by 16 & after the week had past I called mid way & was then informed that the owner had decided to continue renting the promised 9 by 8 unit to the pervious renter!? The owner told me that the next 8 by 9 Storage unit would be made available to me first for renting, so again in good faith I continued renting the 9 by 16 patiently awaiting the next available 8 by 9 only to month after month be disappointed by the news of no availability of any 8 by 9 units for rent supposedly for a entire year time.

PUBLIC STORAGE ARE A BUNCH OF CROOKS! Upon review of payment receipts, found my acct to have been charged a 'bad check,' charge seemingly from the beginning of my contract although I always paid cash. They tried selling my unit twice before actually selling it; after giving me the wrong auction date (I feel was on purpose due to previous employee dismay when I arrived to pay for my unit and overheard her make a phone call saying," no go on that." They refused taking a cash payment from someone authorized to enter and deal with my account. (banks don't even refuse deposits) After all the deceit and auction of my precious belongings, (letters from my recently deceased husband from his military enlistment when he was stationed in Afghanistan 1 of 3 times - just one example) I presented my findings to the women in the office. The lady that initially rented the unit to me ran and hid in the back while the other turned beet red, began to sweat while her voice started cracking. A week later I received a check in the amount of 50 odd cents or so which made me livid. I hadn't the time to pursue anything against them yet due to the sudden loss of my husband but am ready to now. I wonder how many others are scammed in a similar fashion?! I feel severely wronged and insist someone take responsibility for their actions in hopes others be warned and made aware of said situation so that these circumstances be prevented in the future.

In the summer of 2016 I decided to rent a Storage Unit, I've been paying my rent unit ever since, but at the beginning of the year 2018 the receptionist at the storage unit told me that payment by checks having arrived at the building where my unit is located. HRA send payment every month I do have proof of the transaction. Since January 2018 “Extra Storage” denied the arrival of this checks. I don't know who is lying, In April of 2018 they put on Auction all my stuff, I got very angry and I decided to sue them. I went down town to a civil court Lawyers who represented "Extra Storage" stated that I kept $500,000 dollars in my unit which is ridiculous. When I went down town on Civil Court I fill the application and the last question they ask me how much money I wanted for all the pain and suffering they cost me for losing all my stuff I sai

Re: Public Storage, Colton, CA
Manager: Claire Bennett

I had 2 storage lockers at the facility for approximately 6 years. They were side by side interior units. Gaining entry to the 24 or so interior units was a 3-step process:

Gate code to get on the property. (linked to your individual unit)
6-digit push-button code. Code. Only known to employees and Tenants with units inside that particular bldg.
Keys to both of my cylinder locks (one for each unit)

I know beyond a reasonable doubt that Claire and her boyfriend entered and cleaned out both of my units. They had just moved in to the on-site apartment. It was above my units. They had one or more homeless males living on the property. They were quite chummy with the one I met when I arrived to take a look at the damage. Both cylinder locks had been drilled out. Metal shavings covered the cement floor in front of both of my units'. She chuckled saying, "ha, looks like this silver dust is all thats left." She asked the homeless guy who happened to be there when I went to survey the loss if he saw anything. They were smiling at one another. Very troubling. She told me that (_________) *homeless guys name* was "her eyes and ears" I asked if he was there last night and had he seen an cars.and, if so, what kind of vehicle and/or at least what color ... Claire repeated the question to him, "Did you see an cars last night?" His response, "Maybe".
Incidentally, Claire called my Aunt in AZ instead of calling me. She left a msg for my Aunt that both doors to my units are wide open, i need to come secure them. She cant do anything. What little bit remained in the units could be removed by anyone until I get down there and secure my units.

Yes I have filed a police report. Yes she made some very self-incriminating statements. Yes she changed her story multiple times. Yes, she said they have cameras and that "she couldnt wait to start going thru the footage." adding ... "It'll be like solving a crime. I love that stuff. Cant wait!" I had made the HUGE mistake of allowing her inside my units when I saw a couple large roaches and a lizard in there. I repeatedly called her to inquire about the video tape. She would say "no i havent had a chance to go thru it.
And the next time I asked about the video She replied with, "Oh there is no video. It was broken that night."

Consider the amount of noise thats created when you drill out 2 cylinder locks in the middle of the night. The facility is in a very industrial area. Its also a very seedy part of town. Drugs, crime are all rampant. Whos going to hear a drill at midnight inside a closed/locked building that sits directly under the onsite upstairs apt where Claire Bennett and her boyfriend are/were playing house and cops and robbers. I do believe Ms Bennett lost her job over this. However, she still resides within a few miles of the scene of the crime. Beware. I dont think Claire, her boyfriend or her "eyes and ears" (the onsite homeless guy) learned their lessons.

I was listed as the emergency contact for our storage unit in Denver, CO and was never contacted about our payment being 30 days late. My husband received an email today stating that all of our items were sold (yesterday), and that we no longer have a unit there, yet still owe money. My deceased grandparents heirlooms, etc. were sold or thrown away without me being contacted. When I called the location, the women proceeded to berate me, saying she couldn't talk to me and that she had been calling me for months. All of which is incorrect, and then she had the audacity to hang up on me. Both my husband and I have now tried to reach out to the District Manager who has not answered or returned our messages. I am beyond upset, confused, and blindsided that they could even do this WITHOUT REACHING OUT TO ME, and then TREATING ME WITH ZERO RESPECT. Public Storage has definitely crossed a serious line, and someone must be held responsible for their undignified response and unlawful selling of our family items.

I maintained storage unit with Public Storage location at 4300 Boulder Highway for SEVEN YEARS! In Mar/April 2019, my mother passed, and I forget and fell behind by one month, I was in the process of bringing. the account up to date and was discovered that my unit was sold. Because I was relocating, EVERYTHING that I owned was lost. Baby pictures, clothing, furniture, appliances, MY LIFE!! The on site manager Chanti was hostile and dismissive when I inquired as to what happened. She attempted to auction my things a few years back. Again, I maintained that unit for SEVEN years! I have been seeking an attorney to assist with Legal action.

I was out of town in New Orleans, I hada son-in-law that was playing for the pelicans basketball team and my daughter and him were expecting their second child. I was there to help my daughter and I left my husband in charge, who was authorized to handle any businesses transactions. He spoke with the Manager, who was a gentle man by the name Of Donald, who he informed of the situation and at that time my husband and I were expecting a large tax refund andcit was scheduled to come at anytime because we were in contact with the IRS and it was confirmed that we would be getting it. My husband went into the office to pay a partial payment towards the balance that was owed. Although it was $200.00 for two months from non payment because we were waiting for our refund. This was also discussed prior with the manager Donald. When he told us that we were in default and they tried to conact us, they claimed they sent an notification to our address. Which that ended up not being true. They sent it to another adress, which was not our address. I gave my email address, when I first opened up an account with Cube smart. I never received a email and when my husband went in to talk to Donald, the manager, he said he could not accept a payment and refused cash from husband, which was half of the balance owed and the fees included, were $500.00 all together. He told my husband not to worry and we would be able to pay in full as soon as our refund came. He said they would hold any action from our personal items being auctioned off. This was not the case the day of the auction came and he allowed our items to be sold. We only had most paperwork and a few household items, clothes, suitcases and family pictures. The only thing that was the most valuable the person who won the auction would of considered was a printer and a laptop and a small book binding equipment. We lost our possessions and Donald the manger to my husband two days after coming to the office, that the buyer was upset abd threw everything away including our family pictures and important paper work. My husband contacted me by phone to inform me that this had happened and I called to speak with Donald and he said he was going to get a hold of the buyer and try to get our family pictures and paper work. He claimed that there was nothing more he could do and told me I should have handled my own Business even though my husband was authorized to be on my account. I then called the Corporate office and they told me they would have the district manager call me. He did and we spoke of the problem and he would get in touch with the buyer and he would try to get our family pictures and paper work and hold them until my return back to Georgia. I called him several times after that and he didn't contact me back. I want something done about this because I read the policy for the guidelines for returning items after the auction and we were supposed to ge them back. I would like someone to contact me concerning this situation. My number is 4xx-xxx-xxxx
Thanks

We were late on payment on storage due to the recent gov shutdown, and we were told that they if we didn't make the next payment they would sell our unit. We had made a partial payment, and although that didn't prevent our storage from being at risk not be sold we were given a receipt saying we had until Jan/27/2019 to pay our storage in full to prevent our unit from being sold. The unit is under my name but I couldn't make it to the storage myself so I went to call to tell them someone was going in for me to make the payment. We were then told our storage was sold on Jan/24/2019. Their excuse was they sent us email and attempted calling. We never received calls, and the only emails we received were ones telling us we were late on payment, and telling us that our storage would be sold on the 27th. None of that can possibly justify them selling our storage unit days earlier than stated on a physical receipt without properly telling us.

I had rented a storage unit from your location in Indianapolis in 46237 east Thompson Ave one it was up for auction on Nov 21 2018 at 11 am I was unable to catch back up after losing my job and a family member. Dec. 5th I had rented another unit informing the office I had just had one go up for auction the prior month n was making sure I was able to get one I was told yes that's not a problem. On Dec 10th at 1:17pm I receive a phone call informing me that my unit o12 never got auctioned off which made me extreamy happy I asked the woman to give me a week or till after x mas n I would b n to pay it I asked how much she informed me of 255 since it was their mistake they didn't catch that at the time of the purchase of my second one Christmas came n gone and I was struggling on coming up with the cash to pay that informed them of the situation I'm homeless plz work with me give me a lil more time. On jan 6th at 2:25pm I receive a phone call from the lady n the office informing me that my unit is going back up for auction on wed Jan 9th unless I can pay 450 to stop it from going to auction I informed the lady at that moment that's not the quote I received from Sylvia back in dec and asked if they could check to c if we could get it lowered n e . Informed her the situation that had I been aware I still had my original unit at the time I purchased the second unit I would have just paid my first unit off and used it n not got a sec one bc. At that time I had enough money to pay it copletly off and would have been able to keep my things . She told b she would talk with Sylvia and call me right back at 2:32 pm she call me back and informed me Sylvia will have to call corporate and speak with then to c what if n e thing could b done and Sylvia would call me the next day to let me know something which should have been yesterday. I never got a call from n e one I was super bussy trying to make my room money I'm still homeless staying n a hotel that cost 60 a night plus make extra on top of that to save my unit by the time I got a break it was late and the office was closed so I was going to make it a priority to get up there first thing today to pay the storage since I was told sun it was going to auction wed nope as I'm on my way to the storage I receive a call from them at 9:54 am which I missed that call I over slept I called them at 11:20am to inform them I'm on my way I was just down the street from to pay the 255 to save my unit she then informs me it had gone to auction today and was sold . I went off what do u mean it's been sold auction isn't untill tomorrow at or around 9'30am tomorrow no mam it was today first off I was n a car full of people when I got the call sun who will testify I was today auction was wed Jan 9th at 9:30am and that Sylvia would call me on Mon after she spoke with corporate abut what I would have to pay. I informed her I never received the call to inform me of the price and wanted to know y and what was said when and if she spoke with them I was then transford to Sylvia and she informs me the amount to b paid was now 450 and they couldn't do n e thing since it had been she said 6 months past dew . First off y did u quote me a price of ?255 then when u told me I still had the unit I have that amount now will u plz take that we can not is what I was told but if I had the entire amount of 450 she could stop the process of the new owners of my unit taking my property but could not tell me if my items were still in the unit or not . I started crying asking her to plz help me that this was B's u give me the best news I had all year long that my unit was still there give me false hope that I can get my property back to tell me there's nothing u can do unless I pay the entire amount owed after it was y'all fuck up to begin with and I hung up calmed down after I pulled over cause like I said I was on my way to the location to make the payment . I regain my self call them back and ask again so if I come up with 450 total u can stop them from leaving with my property I was told yes and then what happens if my items are gone then what well mam I'm don't believe they've taken n e thing out of the unit I said ok but u can not guarantee me this though so what happens if they have then what well have to call corporate and ask them if that's the case but u do want to keep your unit yes I do she said she was going to stop the payment process I told her I'd b there n a HR and a half with 450 I even asked her if she would take the 255 I had so I know I'm not going to loose my unit she said no we have to have the hole thing at one time we don't accpet partial partial payments and she would b closed from 1-2 for lunch I said ok I'll b back by 2. I was unsuccessful in coming up with the other 245 and when I tried to call them and inform them of this I got no response they didn't answer the phone so I was furiouse by this time when I finally got ahold of someone I was told it was too late and that they couldn't do n e thing about it that's y I'm wrighting u. There was only a very few items out of the entire unit I truly wanted that couldn't b replaced and no amount of cash could compensate for it so I once again had to deal with the heartache of loosing my property once again only this time I'm not ok with it the first time I had noone to blame but myself I couldn't make the payments it was my fault I lost it but then u made my entire year the best out of the entire shitty year by telling me I was able to get my things back that ni never lost them to auction to ruining the year this year when I had the cash ready to pay and everything I felt I was lied to my heart is broke all over again and I'm not ok with what happend what can be done done plz help m

My particular situation involved an Israeli owned moving and storage company in California who failed to deliver all of my valuable things after a month in their storage facility in between my move from point A to point B locally in Los Angeles County. These items disappeared and were never located again, until 12 years later on ebay, when I looked up the name of a collection of handmade teddy bears my mother had bought me from a woman in Ventura County, California that had been part of my missing property. I found the bears by searching the company name of the woman who made them, and I found them for sale on ebay. Being sold by the same woman who we bought them from, BUT SHE ALSO IS SELLING MY MISSING HANDMADE ARTWORK THAT I MADE MYSELF WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER, THAT THE MOVERS "LOST", and this HORRIBLE WOMAN HAS PAINTED OVER MY SIGNATURE ON EVERY PAINTING AND HAS ADDED HER OWN THIEVING SIGNATURE AND SHE IS CLAIMING SHE MADE ALL OF MY TEENAGE ARTWORK!! My families storage unit was set up to be sold. We called that morning with our credit card and this horrible women shut the phones off. We called customer service and they said the auction would not start until 930 but this women shut the phones off at 9:00 to let the unit be auctioned off. We were on hold at 9:01. Customer service finally called and got her back to the phones as we were on hold and she said oh honey there is nothing to worry! It's all over!! I said what are you saying? You have nothing more to worry about!!! We were waiting to pay for our unit. She hung the phone up and that was that. In the meantime we had called the manager and he didn't care either. Now I'm consulting an attorney to file a lawsuit. My children are very upset and this women had no right to make a decision illegally. To ruin my families life.??So what can be done? How can our families history be brought back? She was trying to score a promotion with the boss??? No one in their right mind would do that except a hateful, big headed dumb person. So now it's Christmas and our children have no history on the tree, no pictures of our children or pictures they painted when they were in kindergarten. No family heirlooms or certificatesnor medals of accomplish ments to share with their families. No wedding pictures!! The hurt goes on and on. So who gave this women permission? We will have our legal team find out however it will not heal our hearts!

I never received a letter or call saying they are going to auction, delinquent, etc. But. Took it to the "corporate". This place WONT let u make payments or work with u. Yet, read the reviews and u will find I was not and am not the only one having problems...or run into getting behind and trying to catch up or pay on line, etc. It doesn't matter what situation ur face or facing. Bottom line. I did not get reimbursed....especially because "no one else complained". I guess I get what I ask for...didn't have time to look or research....and I find that this company is cut throat.

So I emailed the CEO of the company:

Im sorry. But your district manager Mr. Todd McDermott was biased. Just like with how the account holders/customers were done, I was done the same way. It did not matter what I said. Or when able tell him what I did. What was told to me, not told to me, etc. All about the company and the store, etc. It didnt matter if there was a problem on the site. I shouldve called the store and paid...which I didn't know could til now. And I tried to tell him I was trying the card well before the late fee hit, which was after midnite on the 9th. . I think in taking this higher then maybe the company will fairly, professionally and ethically listen to the customers/account holders. What Mr McDermott was telling me...was not what I was told. No one at anytime told me to go to the store. One rep. One. Was kind enough to walk me through the site and tell me he would let his tech people know (which if u noticed I paid online) all I kept getting hit with was dont do partial payments. No discounts...not one time focusing on the issue I had. And the fact I was trying to get the payment in. Even before the late fee.

**My apologies for the numerous emails, but due to signal and connection problems...puter crashes. Anyway. Like I said, needed storage in a hurry...so opted for the 1st month free. But. There is a catch. I pay $867.50 the 2nd month on. Yep. Or I could've paid $745.00 and that be the payment from them on. But, again needed storage in a hurry. So that explains how I came up with that figure.

No one should be done this way. Or a company to allow to do this or continue to do this. I am a MC 58 year old lady Vet....I pay almost $1000 a month because I am homeless and needed storage
ASAP. They do not work with u. Care. And u pay or else...so the employees apparently can go
shopping. When asked if pay what could when got hit with late fee (was error on their end) they said no payment. And plus I got a free month and new account ...didn't matter if it was website problem or I asked for help getting payment in....u watch...I have to wait for my check to clear...to
pay I will be hit again with fees....the company is greedy. And the public should be made aware of places like this.

Not to sure as to who to direct this to or where, but I want to speak to the CEO or someone up the executive chain. After taking with account holders and reviews I can see why you can't reach a human or any contact info given. Employees doing us as they do and have....and so on. I am taking it also to the BBB and the State of California's Attorney Generals Consumer Protection Dept so that they will see how we are being done. Myself especially.

Numerous complaints. 1. Can't talk to a person. Did talk with Elka but didn't get her #. Second. Want to go to corporate level (Mr. Kirk) and let him know of my intent at this point. I have read the comments and spoke with several accout holders and appalled by how I am done and they were and are. Myself for example. I went to pay on 11/9$867.39. Had the funds and everything. Fast forward...I couldn't. And it wasn't my fault. Your cust. svc and also tech support admitted it was site error. Regardless. I was hit with a $125.10 late fee. This was/is wrong and not right. Because I tried all day the 9th and well up past midnit….The only thing I was told was I was a new account. I already got one month free and nothing could be done. BS! Your website was acting up and I should not have been penalized for it. And I was. It should not matter if I got a free month......the website was not working properly. Your error, not mine. Now, I have a $992.70 payment due. And I am trying to get that in. Delay is waiting for the funds to clear. But the concern here is that if I don't get it in by a certain time according to the store manager I will be hit with another fee. $85.00 foreclosure fee. Even though I have tried and trying to get payments in I am penalized. Keeping the office and company informed even. Regardless...I am hit with fees. And with not being able to do payments til get THAT AMOUNT next I face loosing my things. Which here I have read and heard of how people are done in regards to loosing their things. NOt an auction...but ur employees helping themselves to the account holders belongings yet calling it a auction. This is barbaric. And greedy. I see why they also say they can't keep up. Like myself go to make a payment and find a fee of some sort is attached...then go and get that amount yet for what ever reason delay in getting that in...another fee and so on. And no payment plan. I am taking my concern to the BBB and the State of California's Attorney General's Consumer Protection Office. I will tell them to use myself especially but focus on the reviews and comments. Investigating the practice/actions of not just the company but employees as well.I can pay and apparently others could have had this practice not been allowed or implemented. Or a payment of some kind allowed. Both times I HAVE HAD THE AMOUNT NEEDED....but due to late fees, etc I had to back off and come up with more money...and when have it hit with another fee. Even when the ERROR WAS NOT MY FAULT. I think it is fair that taking it to the next level account holders and those looking to get a storage cell will be heard and it will be seen how this company treats us. ANd I will make it known the hassle of calling numbers given on the Net as well. Automated back and forth. Ignored calls. Judgmental comments, etc. Connie Wilson 8312584208.

Also. It is evident here, if you click on this link (https://www.extraspace.com/Help/Contact.aspx) it takes you to (https://extra-space-storage.pissedconsumer.com/customer-service.html.) This shows that Extra Space Storage knows of the complaints and does nothing. U click on that link u get

(See you later! You are leaving Pissed Consumer and will be automatically redirected to https://www.extraspace.com/Help/Contact.aspx in a moment). And ur back to square one (https://www.extraspace.com/Help/Contact.aspx) which only gives contact info, which as usual and of course automated is done or repetitive links given. No one gets anywhere with all this. And this needs to stop. The company and again I can validate can care less about the account holder...reviews show it also. Only about getting their money, to include the increase of fees...even when fault is on their end.

I stand firm when I say it is evident this company intentionally avoids listening to the account holders. And working with them. If so...the reviews would not be as they are. **True u do have bad account holders but the majority is not. I am not that is for sure**

I will not be disrespected. Lied to. Judgment calls made against me. Talked down to.......and taken advantage of. It was company website error and not mine. I should be reimbursed for the late fee. And the company should keep in mind...what if they were in the account holder shows...waiting for payments to clear, moving, switching jobs/new pay days, checks clearing, etc. Might want to take a look at the company its practices and how employees are doing the account holders...especially those who lost their belongings. And I also understand people need to meet their committments, pay their bills...but at the same time they should not be done as this company does. I am sure company employees move. They have switched jobs, hence differnet pay days...waited for checks to clear, do not like being disrespected, etc....yet this company doesn't have that integrity. Compassion. Respect. It is all about taking and not working with the connsumer. Elsewise there would be customer service available not automation. Payments allowed depending on situation. Time giving when checks are clearing....appreciate those who are attempting to pay the bill not ignore that fact and hit us with more fees, etc. I am not only a consumer but a Marine Corps Veteran. And Integrity and Respect are right up there.

Examples of complaints/concerns ignored. And also google reviews (Extra Soace Storage reviews, for example) but the company makes sure they get tehri money and keeps tacking on the fees.....

I stored with them for over a year. On 11-19-19 I lose it because I was unable to catch up. Due to medical and relocating issues. I just needed a few more days. Also each month my late charges changed. My rent went up without my knowledge. It was told to me after I asked about the different in charges. They claimed the information was sent to me. But I went into their office, this is when I was told??? Also they didn't auction off my things. They offered my belongings to their associates, after they noticed it was video, Then they processed to act as if it was an auction. Also pulled a van in front of the storage to stop my video. Then laughed at me.

No one should be done this way. Or a company to allow to do this or continue to do this. I am a MC 58 year old lady Vet....I pay almost $1000 a month because I am homeless and needed storage ASAP. My husband opened a storage unit in my sons name and paid two months and 1/2 in advance. He is disabled. During this time they never sent us a form, letter or call saying anything was due. Cut our lock and took our belongings. These weren’t just any belongings. My husbands lifetime coin collection, autographs from stars baseball and football cards. Also I had autographs from stars and Walt Disney signed pictures of like Pinocchio in the beginning. The answering machine my husband left was when the storage unit is empty he will leave the lock hanging. But the the unit was still locked and secured. We called the cops they did nothing. The husband claimed there was nothing in the unit the wife said she made out very well on our unit. That my husband and his brother came in and emptied it. My husband is disabled and his brother is dead. Too many lies. And nothing to leave our children. Please help us.618- 513-xxxx John and Michelle McReynolds

Rented for years now, always pay same time of the month around the 6-9th, with assumption rent due on 15th. Last month I was locked out, after paying two months in advance due to late charges. Tho i was never notified. They have my email address, no emails from them in over a year. So i paid120 in fees and then paid 3 months in advance. One week later im locked out again. I dont know why. I did do something they were not happy about, but neglected tontell me they werent ok with it eith plenty of chances to tell me. There are commercial ubits rented which small companys run out of.lots of trucks coming and going and trailers dropped off and picked up. And there is lots and lots of parking space left over. I parked my trailers over the weekend and slept in my truck for two days due to personal issues at home, and since ive been renting here so long i felt it would be safe.
I was warned only once for parking my 5Th wheel and trailer on their lot (open lot, basically a parking lot in front of the office) over the weekend while they are closed. (I had intent to pay for storing the items, but loss in trust forced me to reconsider the saftey of my property).
Warning was taped to door of unit. This is the only contact or communication in a long time outside of dropping off a check to pay rent.
My lock was cut and they even replaced locking mechanisim on garage door, which indicates that they had to open and go into my unit to do so. Put of 100s of units, mine is the inly that had this upgrade even tho there eas nothing wrong with it to begin with. Very worried as all of my personal items and ss# birth certificate, titles and even cash and jewlery are within the first foot of unit. Not to mention atleast 100,000 in tools and other equipment. The aisle my unit is in is the only aisle without a camera. So my concerns are warranted and reinforced by the recent shady behaviour displayes and exhibited by this company.

Im in fear of losing what ive worked my whole life for. Its all in the hands of young people with no respect or kindness for humanity. A small amount of power over others peoples lives has filled their heads like balloons. Tsking a minimum wage job thst requires no education to perform, to such an extent they are like ruling over people with an iron fist and later gossiping about it on facebook. Ive rented here for almost 10 years. Nearly 3/4 of the units are locked out or empty, and im a paying customer who has paif up in full for months to come and im still treated like a sub human. Please help, or point me in the right direction to bring justice to these people. Thanks.

My wife’s ashes was accidentally placed in my storage unit in Indiana as I went back to flordia where she wanted us. I wasn’t able to pay on storage and I emailed the storage unit asking if I paid for shipping if they could grab her ashes and ship them to me. They never responded and I’ve lost her ashes. Can I sue?

My mother and I share a storage unit for everything we don't have room for, or that's too important to lose. The unit is in Texas, under her name. Even when we were homeless for two years, we made sure to hang on to the stuff that went into this unit. Somewhere between $4000 - $15,000 worth of property, legal documents, and irreplaceable personal documents as well as family photos and heirlooms. My storage unit threw away my things before my bill was due for no apparent reason. Not sold - dumped. A full week eaely. We found out when we called them to remove the overlock because I was going to pick up my stuff. They have ZERO explanation for why our unit was cleared out in the middle of a pay cycle a full week before the next bill, but it's logged in their system that a manager named Kathryn went into the unit and did it. My family is devastated by the loss and is suffering significant setbacks due to the loss of identification documents. I live in Austin, Texas and I need to know what my options are and where to find a lawyer that will take this kind of case. I'm considering a $15,000 dollar claim. Can you help or offer advice?

I went to my storage yesterday and my pin code would not work in the gate. Thinking it had expired or something I called and emailed the storage unit as it was after hours. Today they notified me that it was sold back in May. They claim they sent me letters and tried to call me and I confirmed the address and phone number they have on file were correct. I never received anything.

Furthermore, they accepted monthly payments every month since then without notice.

What action can be taken?

I had public storage saw the lock of my unit and take some personal belongings. I was fifty dollars short of the full amount owed due for that month and was literally only 25 days into the month. I had to pay for a new lock. And the attendant tried to bullshit me and try to tell me they could auction my unit being not even a month behind. I'm just curious what the purpose of a late fee if , they can collect a lien without calling, or mailing or anything not even being a month late. What can I do?

I posted on here a while back regarding my storage unit that I had auctioned in November of 2017. Well after I posted the comment on my situation about 2 weeks later right before Thanksgiving I received an email from the lady who is the only manager at the facility saying that there is a 3rd of my unit left and if I wanted to come get it I would have to pick it up that day. I had no way of doing that and I begged her to give me a couple days but she would only give me till the next day which was a Saturday and she said that if I did not come it would be hauled off to the trash. I had no money at the time and no way to go get the stuff so I practically had to get on my knees and beg her and she told me she would give me one more day. The next day I came in to see and their relief manager was there and she took me back to see what was left, the unit was ravaged everything had been riffled threw and thrown all over the place. Many things was broken and their food wrappers and drinks had been thrown on the floor and inside some of the boxes. They even had been smoking inside the unit and put their cigarettes out on some of the stuff in there, I had to rent a Uhaul from them to collect it all. I called their corporate office and told their area manager about what was going on and he really didn't care he just gave me till the next day to get it so I came back the next day to get what was left and when I got there no one was in office so I called the area manager and he said she would be back so I waited an hour and got tired and left. I called after getting home and she claimed that she came back at 10 after the hour which was a lie then she told me that she was not going to listen to my stories and that I needed to come get it so she can be done with me. When I came back she had an attitude with me the whole time and told me that I will be amazed at how much is still left and I asked her about certain items that and she turned white as a ghost and told me if I wanted those back I would have to write a note to the owners. As I waited she would not make eye contact with me just kept looking down and I noticed she was using a purse that looked like one that had belonged to my Aunt and when she saw me looking at it she hide it quickly. She also told me I had to pay $75 to get the stuff in cash and when I did she stuck it in her purse not the cash drawer and refused to give me a receipt. Upon going to the unit she told me she would have to give me a code to get out later because the owner of the stuff now had a code to the unit not me, but it was not a personal lock on there it was their facility lock. I took pictures of the condition of the unit and began removing the items. After I got it all out I started going threw it and noticed it was all trash and broken items that they had damaged and I also noticed that several of the box's had gotten wet and had water damage as well as a large area rug was moldy. As I went threw the stuff I noticed that they had cut up items and smashed stuff, they threw jewelry all over and had taken knives and personal information like blank checks and death and birth certificates as well as IDs, photos had been torn and squashed as well. All of what I picked up was basically trash and when I emailed her about the missing personal items she forwarded it to the area manager and he emailed me back and told me in a very nasty email that there is no such thing as "missing items " and that they would refund me the $70 I paid as gesture of "Goodwill". When I went to go get the money again she would not look at me and after she had me sign a refund sheet she walked off and said your done. Prior she had always given me attitude and even in a brief phone call the day I came to get the stuff she told me "I want to be done with you". I feel like it was all done wrong and many people have told me it was an inside job, it was a terrible ordeal. I was devastated at how they acted like animals and ravaged everything in there and how the management and corporate treated me like garbage.

I understand the business I and I understand the renters side as well. I just recently lost my unit I was behind 3 months and I had called and spoke to the young man and told him that I was going to come in on a certain day and pay the whole thing off. I think that accounts for something I called the day that I said I was going to call which was on the day that my lease would have expired and they had already emptied out my unit. I I am so disheartened. My mother and my father's wedding pictures My Children's History information regarding my taxes heirlooms you name it gone because of five or six hundred dollars. And I don't have to lie, no one called to say "hey, tomorrow your unit will be auctioned if you don't pay today. I received a cancellation notice regarding the insurance only. If I worked at a place like that, it wouldn't have to be policy for me to give a courtesy phone call to let this family know you're about to lose everything I just want to give you the opportunity to do something about it. I was affected by the hurricane Irma I have so many things going on in my life that sometimes I forget about certain things. We think it's just material things, but it's not, its money, its reflection, its memories. And if you have lost children or your mother or father, you are devastated when somebody takes all of the memories that you have of them and throw them in the trash and don't even call you to say here this is no value to me but I know that it means a lot to you. If I worked in a storage unit I would call the Family. It's not that difficult to do. It's not like you have 30 or 40 units being auctioned off on the same time it's three or four phone calls you make per auction that's it

I just had my storage unit auctioned today, I fell behind on the payments but had been making small payments to it but the lady that is the manager of that place would no longer work with me and actually became very nasty toward me. I believe that a couple payments had been stolen after dropping them in the door slot of the office, they was never credited to my account. I could never get anyone to answer the phone there and as a matter of fact I had a friend who was really wanting to help me pay it off a while back using his debit card but the manager would not allow payment threw card only cash and he was in Virginia and could not pay with cash. I begged her to let me have till tomorrow and she refused she stopped answering my messages and calls. It was all my stuff and my deceased family members stuff and I am so upset. That B@&$? Did nothing to help me and she has been very unhelpful for months now I don't know what to do I had that unit for almost 8 years.

How this industry is allowed to take thousands and thousands of dollars worth of item, irreplaceable personal items, access to personal information that would be considered a form of identity theft in any other circumstance all this because of hundred dollars debt?
Which sort of mafia is this?
People what work in thins industry have to be enormously callous and heartless to do what they do.

First off, to that one comment that said tenants show up to their own auctions having nice phones they're unwilling to give up to pay their bills, yes, mine is decent. It's no iPhone 7, but got it for free under *contract* (a contract means cancelling early incurs hundreds of dollars that if you can't pay ruins your credit) Which, btw, we got before our money troubles even started happening, which was a result of me having a life threatening illness....LIFE happens and not everyone who can't pay their bills on time are lowlifes that can't prioritize or be responsible. That was presumptuous.

Yes, we had very sentimental belongings in storage, but we had to stay with family and then move into a small apartment because my husband's new job was across state and wanted him to start immediately without giving us adequate time to find a decently sized place. So assuming we had someplace else to keep our sentimental valuables is also presumptuous.

Our things were auctioned off without valid notification. Half of the time, the company's website was down, or wasn't taking our debit card. Heck, the website didn't even have a payment history or a way to view your contract. And when we'd call, either they wouldn't answer their phone, would put us on hold and then hang up, or they would claim they didn't take partial payments even though in the past they had done so.

When we moved into our apartment, we attempted to update our address twice, and never once received a bill or receipt, let alone a notice or even a phone call to let us know that action was going to be taken. They told us that it would take several months of not paying and a "ton of paperwork and red tape" before we had to worry about auction when I called asking questions because I was worried about finances becoming an issue.

The woman on the phone after the auction was held was rude, cold, and said "we sent out a (as in one) letter" ...to the wrong address...that we had attempted to update twice. We weren't even fully 3 months late yet (month 2 was a week overdue and I was working on getting a small loan because "no partial payments allowed"), so, since when does "several" mean barely two months, and where was the ton of paperwork and red tape? I sure as heck didn't see any.

This is a F*CKED UP INDUSTRY.
It is morally, karmically, ethically WRONG to take 50 K worth of property from somebody when they owe you 500 dollars. Put a lock on the property, charge a crazy overdue fee as time passes by, sue the person that rents the unit but it should not be permissible to do this legally allowed theft. Life is complicated. If you are in between jobs, moving to another location, under stress because of a divorce or other major life events you could easily fall behind, this doesn't mean all your life possessions should be taken away from you. The only reason this bullshit is allowed is because strong lobbies that pay politicians off to allowed such crazy and unjust laws. It is simply not proportional. Many solutions should be in place like insurances for you belongings, a down payment to cover falling behind and so on. Win-win solutions. But it is evident that this is allowed because it is lucrative to have these auctions.

As an operator of multiple Self Storage Sites, I would like to add to this message board:
1. We don't WANT to auction your belongings, it is costly and time consuming and rarely does an auctioned unit recover what is actually owed.
2. I've yet to see a tenant going to auction that didn't have a nice cell phone. They would risk losing their belongings than go without a phone.
3. You signed a legal document. Yes, it is your fault if your belongings are auctioned for non-payment. If you rent an apartment, and you don't pay your rent, guess what happens? Yes, you will be evicted!
4. As with any industry, there are reputable and not so reputable companies. With social media, there's no excuse to not find out who is who.
5. For the love of Pete...DO NOT store birth certificates, family photos or your mom's ashes in storage. You risk not recovering them, and why would you anyway? Find a drawer in your home and keep them safe.
6. If you have been wrongfully auctioned, then by all means...take action, that is your right and I hope it brings proper resolution for you. This is a necessary AND respectable industry; we don't want to be associated with those that have malicious intentions or sub standard practices

In california I rent storage unit and am harassed by pproperty manager for several years. I am told it's permissible to do something then suddenly get written warning claiming I was repeatedly told it was not permitted. Manager also pays other tenants to report directly to her personal phone everything I do. Manager also makes up ridiculous rules and forgets them. All the made up rules apply only to me and no one else. Manager also does not enforce written rules with other renters and claims I break rules when I do not. The management company employing the manager won't talk to renters and tells their employees to lie to prospective tenants to close a sale. Management company tells me repeatedly that the contract has been changed but contract has complete section saying changes must be written and mutually agreed to--this never happened. Manger constantly threatens to lock me out illegally. They breach their own contract and break law repeatedly. California law is on self-storage side, the state favors them over tenants. Lying businessmen get favors and honest tenants get stomped on. I know owner of property for many years and I know he would be ashamed to be associated with this company reputation but they have lied to him, vilified me and he won't talk to me anymore.

Everything gone: The facts:The lease was in 2 names.
No attempt was made to contact either party before the sale.
No notice in writing, either first or final, was ever received. Public Storage national customer service confirms that no notice of lien or auction were sent. They also said that quick sale like this was not their policy. This was local manager's doing.

The leaseholder's missing of payment for May 2017 was an honest mistake. She works long hours as a struggling cook and forgot. When she received her bill reminder by text, she attempted Tuesday, May 23rd to pay May rent.
She was told by unit attendant the lock had been cut and May rent was not enough. She was refused the right to pay partial payment to secure her belongings and that she would have to pay the total of both May and June.
She asked for 2 days to Friday to get the full amount when she got paid. She was told yes, that would be fine.

When she tried to pay Friday, unable to reach anyone at her unit within office hours, she called the 800 number. At which time she was told her belongings had been sold an hour earlier.

She owed only $185. Everything she and her room mate owned was gone by 4pm Friday May 25th Memorial Day weekend when she could not reach anyone to stop the sale. They live in a 300 square foot apartment out of boxes with only their work clothes.
No attempt by Public Storage was made to either lease holder notifying them of sale.
Corporate Customer service explained the normal process:Paraphrased;

'If only May due, June 1st would have been notified of delinquent account. Late fee assessed. Lean fee assessed and notification of scheduling auction typically 3 weeks out. Payment due by last day of the month before lien assessment notice.'

This process was not followed with the regional manager claiming the law is on his side in WA state. False: Not without notice:RCW 19.150 The lease holders have also learned that it was a mass auction of 20 or more units. Presently investigating, collecting documentation and testimonials, and reaching out to others similarly offended especially in Seattle area. This last weekend had been a total nightmare for these two young adults working so hard to survive and the nightmare continues. It is our belief that this regional manager is profiteering and that there are many others in a similar situation.

I need some advice please. A friend of mine had some major health issues and and needed to cut expenses. She cleared out one of her storage units, but still had one unit at the facility (Kentucky). The problem began when she was still billed for both units. She was told a single item had been left in the other unit so she was still responsible for it. The item did not belong to my friend and there was no lock on the unit so anyone could have placed it there.

Not being able to afford both units, she fell behind on payments. Somehow she never received notice of the auction and only found out when she called a few days later to try and pay her bill. Obviously, I only know this second hand so I don't know exactly what happened.

My friend has a very serious disease and it breaks my heart to think her kids could lose her and not even have pictures to remember her by. All of her photos and children's momentos were stored there. So, I attempted to reach out to the buyer by posting a message on the storage facility's Facebook page to try to buy back those items.

Shockingly, the storage facility pulled down their entire Facebook page within hours of my comment. Months later they put it back up and the only thing missing was my comment (which was respectful). It felt very shady.

I once again commented. I was contacted by the company and told they have her personal items. I offered to try to purchase them. My feeling is that they will try to get me to pay the entire overdue bill for both units although these items were all in one unit. Also, I know they made back some money by the sale of the units. How would I find out how much they sold them for? What would you recommend I do? Can I refuse to pay the empty unit's fees? I would love to get these kids back their momentos, but I don't have an infinite amount of money to do it.

Sorry, that got awful wordy. Thank you for your time and insight.

We hired Graebel Moving & Storage to pack up our house, keep it in their warehouse for a few months, and then deliver it to our new home when it was ready. Despite paying up front in full, we received a notice in the mail on April 20,2017 saying the Graebel had gone out of business and if we didn't clear everything out of their warehouse vaults by May 15th, it would be seized and auctioned. Again, we have paid in full for the services in advance and are in no debt to them in any way. Their website verifies that the company ceased operation immediately and is liquidating assets as posted online March 22, 2017 (even though they didn't mail a letter to their customers for another month after that) Upon attempting to contact Graebel for assistance, were told that the company has dissolved and that it is no more. We will receive no help from them to move our entire house worth of belongings to another company's storage facility until our new home is ready. We were told that not only do we have less than 30 days to do so, we must also foot the bill entirely for this relocation of goods. We were told that nearly all Graebel employees (truck drivers, movers, warehouse workers, etc) had been laid off over a month ago. Now, my family is left to come up with nearly $3,000 (the fee for another company to pickup everything from Graebel, store it for one month, and then deliver it to our home. If they can even decipher what is OURS in the warehouse without employees to assist). Graebel has literally dropped off the map, seemingly overnight, with no attempt to fulfill their contracts with customers or reimburse them for the fees they incur trying to immediately clear our belongings to protect them from seizure and auction. Has anyone been in a situation like this? Are there any other Graebel customers stuck like we are, scrambling to come up with THOUSANDS to save everything we own from a company that just vanished without any concern for it's customers? Any lawyers out there who specialize in this and can help us through it?

We had fallen behind on our 2 storage units since a move from our apartment and hard times. We have been trying to make payments on the units. In January, we made $200.00 payment toward our $500.00 bill and it was accepted. I was at work and the man showed up on 2/2/17 and demanded another payment, which I gave him for $150.00. I told him we would not get paid again until 2-25-17 and that I would give him another payment. He stated, "Okay". Today, one of my clients came in the office and stated, "Did you lose your storage unit?" Apparently, our business items that were in the units ended up in the hands of someone and the storage facility stated who owned the units. They sold them with no communication after accepting $350.00. My husband called them and the storage man stated, "We sent you a letter last week". Which we have not received. This man was told we would be clearing out one of the units this month and we would get the bill paid off. He agreed, but then stole everything! There are 10's of thousands of dollars of tools, business supplies, antique furniture OMG I do not know what to do!

One question is there a cap on charges that a storage facility should exercise on late fees and legal fees .and should the storage facility contact it's renters .or should the storage facility have the right to keep letting the fees add up and never notify it's renters. There is a guy in Henryetta ok who is a private owner doing that thing to it's customers breaking all business ethics. Where or who do i call to blow the whistle to .to report this to be investigated by state law.

i will start by saying i am a very responsible experienced educated business person. DO NOT EVER EVER USE "PUBLIC STORAGE". To the storage managers commenting here "no f'ing joke idiots" that if you break agreement there is penalty. But you dont auction off a persons belongins worth 40k when you owe only 500$...you dont know whats inside...bs blah blah... In my case i never received any late notice etc..plus i was away on vacation.. The manger ( Daniel/Christophers) called me this morning and said you have 5mins to pay or its auctions which in itself is ILLEGAL. I called 8 mins later and EVERYTHING IS GONE...45k worth minimum..valuables etc...say what you want this is CRIMINAL... The NY attorney General takes alot of complaints on this. I suggest everyone call him and write..there are forms on line.. and call EVERY news channel in the area. I was more then willing to pay full amount for being ONE month late..and for that its gone after being given 5 minutes to pay, i call back 8 minutes later and gone... I have alll call logs on my phone..

DO NOT EVER USE PUBLIC STORAGE.... unreal...this is third world type behavior... of course the auction off to make money... every container has a larger worth inside then a monthly feed....this is lay up gangster busines...but this PUBLIC STORAGE is going to pay.....i need help with this... have all the proof in the world.... I NEVER RECEIVED any warning...person even said on phone this morning sent it registered...I NEVER signed or recieved any notice... someone tells me you have five minutes and i say ok give me a few.....what the F.....

No one wants to sell your belongings. People who put items in storage must make sure they keep their contact info updated. Rest assured that we would much rather take your payment then auction your unit. However it is not the facilities responsibility to call and remind you of your payment or to make sure your contact info is up to date. Majority of facilities actually do call you or have some sort of automated call service to send text and call reminders.

With that being said its a business and those Mom and Pop facility owners will not be inbusiness long if they continue give you hand outs cause you simply failed to call, keep you info updated or camp out at a facility until the facility Manager returns. Most Managers these days are not always just administrative employees, who stay in the office all day. They actually have to go and buy parts or tools for onsite maintenance. Most of the time we are at the post office sending letters by Certificate of Mailing(Which the Postal Office actually verifies your mailing address on the letter and in the Certificate of Mailing Book, then stamps book if everything matches)

Bottom line is if your property is that important, just make your payment on time. Storage facilities lose more money on units that are occupied and not bringing in rent. Then auctioned and sold or not sold. Auction company gets paid if unit sales or not. Then the facility has to pay to have your unit taken to the dump if its not sold. If the facility doesn't precede with Auction in a timely manner they lose so much more money.

If it was your business and your lively hood and the well being of your family hinged on its success. You would do the same.

It's simple: don't get a storage unit unless you're ready to be antagonized, demeaned, and eventually robbed blind by the people you're paying to hold it.

Today, everyone has some BS excuse as to why they are late on making their payment on anything. Bottom line, tough crap! Be a adult, plan accordingly, have a cushion or back up, pay your damn bills, fulfill your obligation, you know.....the one you entered into when you agreed to pay the company for the product they have provided you. Don't like the fees? Pay on time! My God, what's wrong w/ society is the entitled whiners that will argue why they should be exempt from the rules. I have storage, never encountered any issues.....why? BECAUSE I PAY & follow the rules. Amazing concept! Now, let's here you BS about why poor ole you fell victim to the evil big business. Bet you didn't pay, or on time for that matter.

I've read some of these comments from managers and employees responding to those who lost their storage units to auction.

I just lost my unit and I won't go into detail of all the value. But I paid over $4500.00 for rent of my storage space over a 21 month period. And it was only a 10 by 15 unit! I fell behind in payment and in the seventh week, it was auctioned off. This particular storage company couldn't wait a few more days until I had the full payment. But, a privately owned storage facility would have given me the extensions.

The privately owned storage facilities most of the time will extend the time to make payment. I now know of some privately owned facilities that actually wait for months. They are generally family owned and they do care about their customers and the ones I have now contacted, only charge 7 to 10 dollars late fee instead of 20 to 25 percent of your monthly rental rate like the Corporate companies do! HOWEVER, the storage facilities that are CORPORATELY OWNED, DO NOT CARE WHATSOEVER. THEY CHARGE AN ARM AND A LEG AFTER LURING YOU IN ON A SPECIAL AND A REASONABLE MONTHLY COST, THEN THEY HIKED IT UP EVERY 4 TO 6 MONTHS! If you are late on the payment due on the first of the month, they tack on high late fees and deny you access to the unit a few days later. They keep on doing this throughout the first month. Finally, if you can come up with the money to keep your unit from going to auction you will pay 3 times the amount of your monthly unit cost. Then after you pay all that money to keep your unit, the next month's payment is due a few days later! Now who has the money to pay 400 dollars to keep unit from going to auction and then have another 135 dollars a few days later to pay your monthly unit rent, let alone rent a u haul and move to a privately owned facility!!??? So while you are trying to come up with 135 dollars for the monthly rent, (OH Whoops) a few days later, (here we go again) late fees and denial of access to unit. You can't catch-up. NEVER EVER RENT FROM A CORPORATELY OWNED STORAGE FACILITY! GO TO THE PRIVATELY OWNED WHICH IS GENERALLY FAMILY OWNED.

I had all my personal and business items...my entire life, in my storage unit, some items which are not replaceable/ The estimated valued of what I can place a price on is at least $10,000. Some items were new and never even used. They did not send proper notice of the auction. I found out the property was sold when I called to let them know I'd be in to make a payment; I was then told the property was sold in auction almost a month ago. The storage company claims they didn't have to send notice by certified mail and said "It isn't their fault if the post office isn't doing their job." I was also told that nothing had been return to them deliverable. I requested a copy of the notice and proof of mailing; I was able to get a copy but they had no certified mail receipt or certificate of mailing to show the proof the notice was mailed. I have also never received information on how much the property was sold for. Needless to say, I have contacted an attorney to sue the storage company for the value of my property and punitive damages.

I rented a storage unit from a local storage play in July 2016. I paid my first month's rent and the other fees. I gave the attendant my CC information to setup autodraft so I did not have to think about paying as we were moving with 2 kids under 2 and a lot of international travel for work. Well, in August the company was bought out by Storage units of america and they did not transfer my autodraft information. I get home from a trip in September to find my code does not work and after calling and finding out that my account was overdue with a late charge. I told them that I had no problem paying the storage fee owed, but I should not have to pay a late charge on something that I had no control over and didn't even know! They gave me a temporary code and I went to retrieve a few items from my unit. The unit has a secondary "Orange" lock on it. So I called back and they told me they could not do anything and I had to see someone at the office. I have gone 3 times to the office on Saturday mornings when I go home from traveling and the manager/employee has not been there due to an "Emergency". I my opinion, they are holding my items illegally and am not sure what I should do. Any suggestions?

It's not the fact that my storage unit was auctioned off. I missed my payment and couldn't pay at required time, so they had to do what was necessary. My complaint is that I asked could I get my tax information, all things that had our socials, date of birth, birth certificates, our diplomas, family pictures....what the hell can you do with our family pictures? Now I'm faced with identity theft. Someone has filed taxes in my name, bought a house, car....I don't even own a house of my own. What can I do?

What about a storage facility giving access to an ex wife to my fully paid and legal unit? Shouldn't the facility be punished for giving her access and cutting my lock and shouldn't she be guilty of something for entering my lawfully registered unit and removing items?

My Mother's unit was auctioned in Boca Raton. Claimed there was a notice sent to a former address, 2 months over due and they auctioned the unit that had a significant amount of valuables. We sued them and won, it wasn't a hard procedure. They had no proof of sending a physical letter nor did they email or call.
Storage managers are Not the brightest people, we dealt with the corporate office, letter from our lawyer, I pressed to go to court and they settled. Property manager was also let go, the whole ordeal was done within 3 weeks.

I manage a storage facility in FL and I do everything by the book. Are there some that don't do it by the book? Maybe. But don't tell me you didn't get your notice even though your address hasn't changed? That's total BS. Take responsibility for your crap and stop blaming others. We don't make money selling units. If we're really, really lucky, we might get what is owed, but most of the time it's less, and a lot of times it's not even close. And if we do get more, it goes to the tenant. That's right. The delinquent tenant who can't handle his/her bills and stops paying gets the "overage." So, explain how we "made money" by selling your unit. YOU rented the storage unit. YOU signed a legal document saying you would pay when due. YOU signed a legal document stating EXACTLY what would happen should you stop paying. YOU were given documents stating we needed address/phone number changes promptly. YOU are the only person to blame for losing your unit.

Some of these comments are laughable to say the least.

I've had customers mad that I wouldn't waive their late fee. The reason I should? Because I didn't call her to remind her to pay her bill. Sorry lady, I'm not your mother.

Most managers and storage companies are legit businesses and do the right thing. I work for the most ethical company I've ever ran into. We do everything by the book, to the absolute letter of the law.

But I can't stress enough, IT IS NOT OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CALL YOU TO PAY YOUR RENT. In the state I live in, we are required by law to send the letters, publish auction info in the paper, etc. We do all of that, AND CALL to let people know their belongings are going to auction. If we can't reach you, not our problem.

My company has procedures in place to work with customers so customers don't lose their things. I have personally helped many people avoid auctions by working repayment agreements on severely delinquent accounts, taking a fraction of what is owed and having them move their stuff out immediately. It is generally not the company's prerogative to sell your stuff. It is never our prerogative.

WE DO NOT MAKE MONEY ON THE SALES. That is the biggest lie that this website is telling you people, and you believe them. And I quote: "When property from a storage locker is auctioned off, it is often at a profit to the storage company." That in itself is complete BS and completely voids any other information they are giving. You can check the revised statutes for your individual state, I GUARANTEE that you will find that we are not allowed to collect more than is owed on the unit. Where I live, anything over what is owed is to be returned to the customer who lost their unit, and if you don't collect it within a year, it is turned over to the county treasurer. PERIOD.

When we sell your unit, WE are attempting to collect on money WE LOST renting to you. So you can sit here and cry all you want to about not receiving a letter or a phone call, but what it boils down to is YOU SHOULD HAVE PAID YOUR BILLS.

There are maybe a few legitimate wrongdoings in this entire comment thread, and that is all. If you paid your rent and the facility still auctioned your stuff, yes, sue the crap out of them. However, all of you claiming you have grounds to stand on because you never received a phone call or a letter, you should take responsibility for not paying your bills. Odds are, the facility has documented proof that they attempted to contact you (I know mine does). If you can rent a unit, you are obviously an adult with adult responsibilities. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS.

"I just lost my second unit..." "I lost my unit back in..." "I just lost my unit when..." see what you did there? YOU LOST YOUR UNIT. YOU DIDN'T PAY YOUR BILL, AND THE FACILITY ATTEMPTED TO RECOUP THEIR LOSSES. You say you lost your unit and you are absolutely right. YOU lost your unit. YOU.

Hi Mary,
Thanks for your comment. We do respond to our readers, however, we ourselves are not attorneys. The way the process works is that when someone has a complaint, for example storage unit contents being sold, that individual fills out and submits a complaint form on our site. Those forms are directly sent to attorneys who specialize in that area of law, who then review the complaints. If there is a potential case, the lawyer or their office will contact the individual who submitted the complaint form. We cannot respond ourselves on legal matters as we're legal news publishers, and as I said, we're not attorneys. Individuals who submit a complaint receive an email with instructions on how to check the status of their complaints. For additional information, see our FAQ page: https://www.lawyersandsettlements.com/faq.html

Common thread in these posts. People storing items in a unit and CLAIM they were not contacted when they were delinquent. Bullsh*t. Every state says to send notices to last known supplied addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and certified letters as the time starts to add up. Pay your rent and you have no problems. Your excuses do not pay the bills at the facilities. You initialed the lease and signed the lease and agreed to the terms. If cannot afford, get current and move your shit. I have heard every excuse and it is always someone claiming they are being picked on. Someone call the waaaaahmbulance.

Noone from this site ever responds. What is the problem? Why not just take the site down? About $35,000 of my property was seized including all of my financials and my relatives' remains. All of my inventory for a new business, about 10,000 family photos including 8 wedding albums from a early as 1880 and no copies anywhere. All of my late mom's jewelry and the antiques from her home. 2 genuine Tiffany lamps and the list goes on and on. There is no evidence of a legitimate sale but the Proseutor doesn't feel he can do anything YET. I believe they were in league with someone who took the property and knew it wasn't a legitimate sale. My understanding is that real dealers do not throw out personal items. They return them to the facility or the owner if contact info is in the unit. Lowly ones sell it back to the renter. I have called the manager at home and she sounds deranged. Really frightening. I think a lot of criminals are in this industry.

Something has got to be done! This relatively new "vulture" industry of scavenging other people's possessions is pathetic. Instead of getting a "real" job these storage unit buyers are picking the bones of people who are doing nothing more than getting behind in their payments, having issues making a payment or other reasons for what is happening. The buyers of these units should:

#1 - be completely responsible for returning any and ALL personal effects such as personal paperwork, personal mementos that have no value to anyone else, personal photographs and photo albums and anything else like diplomas, certificates, passports, birth certificates and other related items. These items should all be returned to the storage management and should be held for a reasonable amount of time and the owners notified vigorously.

#2 - Every state should adopt the same laws and regulations for this industry as to the proper procedure taken when the consumer falls delinquent, as well as their responsibilities for returning any personal effects that should be decided upon by state law makers.

#3 - Special offers, such as Public Storage's "$1 for the first month" special should be disallowed. A majority or people who have to store all of their possessions in a storage unit do so because they are often forced into a situation where they have either lost their living accommodations, their homes have been foreclosed on, they have lost their jobs or for a number of reasons. Because of these situations their finances are extremely limited and are easily "lured" into special deals like PS's $1 special. Other similar businesses like the rental and leasing companies offer deals using a free month incentive, but at the end of the lease, such as with it being used as the 12th month. This is obviously a very successful marketing ploy of which PS is well aware of, with only the purpose being, to bring in low income storage renters who often then find themselves victims to losing their personal effects.

#3 Laws regulating the actual selling of the storage units' contents should strictly mandate that storage unit contents must be displayed to the potential buyers and auctioned off piece by piece (for larger, more expensive items) or by being grouped different "lots" of items. If the rental company is serious about their complaints of losing money when they are "forced' to auction off the units, then this would easily more than make up for the delinquent amount that they are owed as well as having any monies over the costs then given to the original unit's owner. Yes this creates more work for the rental company but the delinquent payments would most almost always be recovered.

Unfortunately this would also put an end to the "storage wars" and "treasure hunting" phenomenon that has swept through the storage industry, but so what? It's time that we all stop thinking of only ourselves and start acting like compassionate, caring human-beings who do the humanitarian and good thing by helping those who need assistance. God forbid you find yourself in a similar situation someday.

Why this industry is regulated completely different than most other industries is beyond me. Any other similar business would have to take the delinquent clients to small claims court in an attempt to make them pay the fees they owe. This industry has been handled so differently because most of the negatively-effected consumers are ones that do not have the resources nor effective legislation to fight back and are often looked upon by our law makers and society as insignificant and not a cause to invest their time or reputations on.

It's time everyone stops believing the repetitious claim that, "If they would have paid their bills like the rest of us have to do, then they wouldn't be in this position. They have no one else to blame but themselves."

This viewpoint is selfish, careless, and disheartening, usually the opinion of someone who is benefiting financially from their neighbor's or complete stranger's misfortune and now trying to justify what they are doing as being the right thing. There are those who now need our help instead of criticism. No matter the situation they have found themselves in, let's try to find a positive outcome instead of watching as their "bones" are being picked clean.

Unfortunately implementing these ideas into laws and regulations would also put an end to the "storage wars" and "treasure hunting" phenomenon that has swept through the storage industry, but so what?

It's time that we all stop thinking of only ourselves and start acting like compassionate, caring human-beings who do the humanitarian and good thing by helping those who need assistance.

God forbid you find yourself in a similar situation someday!

Hi Lauren,

Thanks for your comment. We do respond, however, we ourselves are not attorneys.

Why would anyone in their right mind contact a lawyer from this site to possibly represent them in a potential storage unit claim when they clearly do not respond at all to any of these posts that they themselves have created a platform for. Their very poor website representation would lead me to believe they provide equally poor legal representation. Find a compentent lawyer in your area that will actually respond.

My parents and I had a unit at public storage for many years. In April of this year we mailed a payment that seems to have gotten lost in the mail. In May my parents wrote a new check to cover the cost of the April payment and the cost of May rent (late fee still outstanding. We understood that and planned to pay in the next few days). My father left a voicemail (because no one at the facility EVER answers the phone) informing them that a check was in the mail. The manager called back that afternoon to tell us that a check in the mail 'wouldn't do', but neglected to tell us that it was because the unit was scheduled to be auctioned the next day. We never received a certified letter, or anything else--email and mailing addresses have not changed--saying the unit was going to auction. Several days ago we received notice that it had been sold. We have called many times over the last few days to see of any of the more personal items such as family photos, have been left/returned for us, or to leave contact info for the purchaser, but no one answers the phone nor have they returned any of our calls. What are our options? Even if we were to sue and win we wouldn't get our stuff back. It's gone. So infuriating.

Hi,
I just found out that the storage company auctioned off my unit. It was everything my family owned. My family and I had come to India on long vacation and told the storage company email was the only way to reach us in emergency.
We have lost everything, my baby pictures, my parents wedding album, gold jewellery worth $50000 and so much more. We were not informed of anything. I had already paid for 5 months in advance and was not notified when my credit card was for some reason being declined after the 5th month. The company now says they got my email wrong, but they still had my dad's on file. My dad also sent them several emails, if they had replied to a single one of them we could have provided them with a new card detail or gone and picked everything up. I want to sue them, but I'm not sure what's the procedure, can someone please help us

The day the storage space was up for auction at 9:30am, in person, at 11:00am, I explained I had all the money and I needed to go to the bank and I would be right back. The manager said as long as I paid it in full there would be no problem. When I left the property there was the lock from the owner and a tag on the door of the storage space I was renting.
When I got back two hours later, a new lock was on the door, they auctioned off my stuff.
When I asked who the auctioneer was they yelled at me to get off of their property.
I suspect they did not have an auction. Can the owner give my stuff away to just anyone? This happened in Arizona, where the laws are to suit the corporations and screw individuals.
My girl friend rents another storage shed on the same property. They told her she had to pack her things and not return that day. While she was gathering a few things, the police officer and the district manager stood at the door and harassed her, telling her to hurry up and pick that up pick this up over and over again like children on a playground. My girlfriend was sobbing. She can return only when a manager is there to escort her. She did not do anything except, meekly through tears, ask the police officer to ask the new owner of my personal property to please sell her some of my things back.

I totally understand the people that are coping with the lost of a storage unit. Here in Columbus Ohio it has happened to people that I know. I most recently am a victim of loosing all my belongings, which is hard to accept. The personal items included grand-kids pictures, manila folders of documents that range from Certificates/awards, Social Security Retirement information and many other documents.

I had a unit at Public Storage. They auctioned my locker in which I was never notified. I received a letter after the unit had been sold advicing me that the unit sold for $100. When I spoke to a representative she said the manager was upset that she couldn't reach anyone and auctioned everyones unit who did not answer or return her calls. The representative was very apologetic after I stated that the manager breached the contract. She gave me the number to corporate. I called for an entire month to no avail. I would like to sue for the value of my locker.

I have a question and I would really like some like some help. I have had a storage company lockup I paid the company 17500 in rental for an entire house contents over a time period but in France. The rental started at 300 Euros and was then upped to 375 euros I also had things appearing on my bill saying miscellaneous and things like that I worked out with some late fees they charged over the period 575 euros per month instead on 300 which was easy premium x months so I had a descrpancy of 6000 in my opinion in over charges. I got a lawyer and paid the lawyer to find out about all the charges make sure the billing was correct this happened in March 2015 my bill was up to date. They ignored my lawyers registered letters which were very polite to sort out the situation...I had been out of the country and don't speak French ... They then much later threatening to throw out my things in June 2015 whilst still ignoring the lawyer... My things total 100k euro it was all things for a house purchased my a lawyer on equity release funds.. My lawyer filed the same day a legal block preventing them taking my things as a dispute wasn't settled... They wrote back to him stating I had given them permission to throw away and discard my things...and not confirming anything about my items... Of course I hadn't done given them permission...however they may of had some small print in the French contract...the contract was in the storage company lock up and they wouldn't provide another copy I was away and had been away for 1.5 years in Hong Kong...my lawyer then filed a force court block stopping them throwing or taking my things.... So there were two legal blocks filed on returning at Christmas and not getting any response from them to any correspondence they had sold the entire contents for a 1100 euro bill then put 1300 balif costs on top. They did this in September 2015 after the lawyer had been engaged with them since March 2015 a balif I sent found that out. They stole and sold all my items and ignored legal protocol which prevented them touching my things and also during an unresolved billing dispute. I can hardly believe it... I thought about suing the ceo personally for selling my items for profit and ignoring legal protocol... However the lawyer suggests to sue the storage company itself... They have in given an unsigned copy of the contract which has clauses like items in the lot can't exceed 4999 euros.. They were informed in writing of the value of my things ... Please help with some advice... I need some collective thinking

I just want to say to these people (who are probably storage workers or owners) that not everyone get their letters if they are late on their storage. My father just lost his because he is homeless and staying with a friend and used my sisters address when signing up. A certified letter came for him and my nephew must have signed for it and by the time they decided to give him the letter, it was auctioned. Another experience I've witnessed was that you're less than one fn month late because of limited income and these evil assholes charge you for the next month and unbelievably ridiculous fees that make it almost impossible to pay to get your stuff. A $180 a month locker, after the 6th of the month, goes up to $660 fn dollars!!!!! So the current month and the prorated bullsh*t month adds up to almost $700?? When 2 months should be $360 plus a late fee? Like someone else on here said, you should be very careful because the way you treat customers, youre likely to get hurt. Even an employee said that calling the 800 number will be no help. Public storage company should be ashamed and disgusted with the business they run. Everything about it sucks. The employees. The costs. The managers. The no empathy for the ones that really had no other choice than to put their stuff in there and they can't even let you get the pictures of your entire life that mean nothing to them but it's more than everything to most. So heartbreaking. I hope my dad gets his photos back. I have none of myself growing up or of my gram. I'm so sick to my stomach. Karma will get you people.

I was renting a unit at public storage in Maryland and had become late on my payment by less than a month and was charged outrageous late fees and lien fees that tripled my normal monthly amount. I found a way to come up with what they were claiming I owed and paid it and was still denied access to my unit due to the fact they had changed/cut my lock. Well then the next month I lost my job, house and just about everything else. I called the storage unit and told them what was going on and told them that I wanted to and needed to get into my unit to get my father's ashes and his service flag as well as my pictures and was told that was not going to happen...but at that point my unit was paid in full. I then called due to never hearing back about asking to speak to a manager and was told that my unit had been auctioned. Seriously how is that legal, nothing mailed to me at all and now my father's ashes and service flag are gone, along with my wedding pictures and all my children's pictures. They have no heart at all and then refused to tell me anything else about the outcome of the auction. I am heart broken, What can I do?

I just lost my second unit to Public Storage in the state of NY. This unit contained the very last of my children's, and my belongings. The unit was packed, fortunately I did get back papers and some pictures. I did have cameras but I did not get them back. All of our stuff is gone, my kids are heartbroken (devastated). One box of xbox games should have been enough to pay for the balance due on the unit, or a chest full of action figures my boy's had for over fifteen years also would have been enough, but their savages. There's no working with these people, I would never put stuff in storage again-ever. Once you put your stuff in there its gone, if you owe they tack on more than one late fee per month, lien fees. They did not follow Lien law either for this state. How is it fair that they get your belongings than they auction it off and now they put you in collections? The guy told me they auctioned it off, I did try asking him for a few more days to pay it but be wouldn't budge. Next thing I know I'm getting calls from a debt collector. There is no Itemized list of the unit, or how much the unit was auctioned off for. It states if your unit is not auctioned than your unit will be thrown away. How is it fair if you may have items in there worth much more than the amount due that are sold way under value or even thrown away? Items of sentimental value. What's the difference if the tenant just removed their belongings and is put into collections, they say this is similar to housing laws, evictions. Even in evictions landlords get their property back and so does the tenant. How do we know our units are thrown away, and that the storage place owner isn't selling our stuff on the side? This is not fair.

Well this is great I just received a voicemail that my pictures can be picked up at the storage office. That's great why are they not in the unit. Oh ot was auctioned yesterday and why was that. Because they say I didn't pay as everyone else says. Well I did I have my current month due and the email shows my statement of that and what next month will be. No information on there about an auction nothing. Only thing I have now is a voicemail auction complete. I don't understand if I am paid up other than what is due for the month of December how did my property go to auction on 12/28. And yes I did have at least 30k worth of property in there. 3 items alone were worth 15k. This is very unreasonable and if I owed Months of rent I understand this is not a charity. But to have the current moth due and be sold OUTRAGOUS to say the least. I'm in New Jersey do I have any recourse. Thank you

Dear storage facility managers, f*cking with people's property is not very smart. People are emotionally attached to that crap or they would throw it away instead of dragging it into your sh*tbox lockers. One day you will piss off the wrong person.

My sisters has had a storage unit since 2009, and over the past two years she was always late making her payment I thought. I made her last payment $780.00 in July 2015, but when she said they are going to auction off her storage again in August 2015, and only had one day left to pay or it was going to go up for auction, I knew something was wrong. I told my sister to go ask management for a print out of her transaction history. Management yelled at her, telling her they are tired of going through this with her, and was declined a print out. Looking at the records as she has kept everything, I noticed her rental agreement changed, and asked her when she changed the dates, and she replied she didn't. My sister has M.S and some things have become difficult for her. We were going to get her stuff out of storage on Sept 1 2015, but paid up till December 8th 2015. On December 10th 2015, my sister and I went in and I asked for the print out history, and also told management that I was an accountant. I already knew from the documents I did have, that management changed her rental agreement due date. I asked for a copy of the new rental agreement due date changed on 8/1/12. Management replied it is on the end of the late payment notice. When looking at the closing history statement, there were 4 payments never deducted, and every time she made a payment she was still left with a balance owing them money, due to the new rental agreement date set by management. I told management this was illegal, and showed them that none of my sisters receipts given shows she owes and outstanding balance. This management took advantage of my sister who had M.S, and had been doing so since 2012. All the dates on her receipts given don't match the dates in the statement history report. None.!!

I was technically 23 day's late on my payment to Public Storage when they auctioned my unit. The unit contained literally everything I owned and some family heirlooms I was holding on to. I had the unit for over a year and a half but in the last four months had to make double payments every other month. The persons working in the office knew my situation had changed as I had informed them, I'm on disability, had to replace my vehicle and had moved with my young teenage son into a hotel. Without any late fees the amount I owed was $236,which was 2 months. There was no certified letter sent as per North Carolina statutes state, they were informed I could be reached by email yet only received payment confirmation emails. I had no phone, which they were aware of yet complained they complained they were trying to call me. From what the office worker told me, as soon as the 32nd day of nonpayment came they began auction proceedings. I was able to contact the location on the 27th of October only to find out my property was auctioned off on the 23rd of October, which boils down to I was 53 days late! I again contacted the location to see if any of my belongings had been left behind(response: Oh haha nothing's left in there). So I asked if they could contact whomever purchased the unit and give them my contact info and ask for them to contact me in regards of the possibility to get pictures, medical records, legal papers and anything else that has no resale value for them. Each time since I continue to get the run around. Any possible help or information would be greatly appreciated.

This article is complete bogus. I've worked in the Self Storage Industry for over 7 years and my father owns a Storage Management Company. Yes, there are different laws in different states for the requirements on when you can sell someones unit. The storage facility DOES NOT, I repeat, DOES NOT, want to have to sell your goods. They would rather you pay for it, they recover the debt, and you recover your goods. When you don't update your EMAIL / PHONE NUMBER / ADDRESS THEY CANT CONTACT YOU!!! They have no way to get in touch with you, and believe me, they call/email/send mail consistently.. You can't say they didn't try because you forgot to update your info to them. We do not want to sell your goods nor do they enjoy going through the process to sell them because it is a >LEGAL< matter. We're not just going to sell your goods out of the blue, we lose money selling your stuff and we definitely don't need you to make a lawsuit against us. Facilities have to pay certified letters, newspaper ads, AND pay an auctioneer to sell your stuff, and more than 90% of the time we don't even recover 50% of the debt. WE ARE LOSING MONEY BY SELLING YOUR GOODS!! Just remember that.

People please keep the storage facility up to date of your address and phone number, when a customer is late we try to call after 15 days we send out a pre-lien letter by certified mail and a lien letter after 30 days, we never stop trying to get a hold of you. We do not make money on auctions, we lose, we do not want to see people lose their belongings at all, right now I have a room going to auction that all mail has been returned as undeliverable/no forwarding address, PEOPLE KEEP US INFORMED OF YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION, PLEASE!!!

STORAGE companies do not get to keep anything over the money that is owed to them. They have to give the rest back to the customer by California law. Its always a loser deal for them to go to auction.....so please dont think they are selling your stuff to make money. 99% of the time, they never even recover 50% of the rent that is owed to them. Just FYI

Customers kill me! There is no way these people don't know they owe the storage company money. They chose to ignore the fact that their goods are the lien in the instance they don't pay. We hear it all -- the excuses, the promises. Don't whine when the company needs to recoup their space to rent to someone who WILL pay. Most of the time customers are dodging phone calls or moving and not advising storage company of their new address. No wonder they pretend they don't get contacted. By the way, if your entire life is in storage, I don't think you would forget to pay. Storage is not a necessity. Store your valuables at home if they are so precious!

Im so confused about most of the posts here. They all say "my stuff was auctioned off without sending me a letter warning me my stuff was going to be auctioned"....if you paid on time every month how is this even a posibility?? Did you expect to store your belongings with a business that is in this to make money for free on their dime?? Im not saying all companies are good because they arent but i havent ever seen one storage place sell someones stuff sooner than 2-3 months of not paying them so to say "i didnt get a letter so this isnt legit" seems like more of a bs excuse than one that has some kind of backing. Yes some states require them to give you a heads up via a phone call or a letter but u yourself should know not paying the rent owed will cause u to lose your stuff. I mean look at the one comment about "$120k works of clothing was stored in this unit"....how believable is that?? U had 120k of merchandise for your store ontop of whatever you had on the store shelves (im left to assume the 120k was stuff that was waiting to go into the store once some stuff moved off the shelves) and ur unable to make a few hundred dollar payment on time to pay for ur rent? If u had 120k layin around y not invest it into a bigger store or better yet dont buy 120k worth of clothing that u cant store yourself?? I dont mean to be a downer guys but alot of these stories leave out soo much that caused your stuff to be sold off. I saw a handful pf people on here post things that sound like they have a valid claim like the guy that said a payment was made the month before so it seemed like the storage company up and sold his stuff as if he made no payment at all but if he has proof of his payment then hes good but the people saying they werent told so they deserve huge amounts of money dont really have ne reason to be complaining because again u know if u dont pay ur bills ur service gets cutoff or ur storage unit gets sold. Plain and simple. This isnt ne thing new. Learn from ur mistake and move on

My wife and I have had to store all of our belongings for several years at the same storage facility. Recently, that storage facility has been sold to another company. Since then, it has been a nightmare, leading to the loss of all of our belongings, including, of course, priceless, irreplaceable items. My wife has been unable to work the past few years but somehow I have managed to make the storage payments. When I went to make a payment on 1/12/15 of over $1,200, they refused the payment and proceeded to auction all of our things in two 10 x 20 units.

Our entire unit was auctioned off on July 16th without any written notice or publication in newspaper. Our rental agreement was payment in advance. We paid for month of (June) on due date 5/1/14. We were 15 days late paying for July but made entire payment ($425). Manager at storage facility said she tried to contact us by phone. When we went to facility on July 28th, our entire household of items from unit had been auctioned.

I was not notified that my belongings were to be auctioned off. I did not even know they held an auction. I received a call on Thursday, February 27, 2014 in the afternoon to come pick up some personal items. This is when I found out that my things had been auctioned off.

Storage unit was auctioned without any warning. Was only one month late with payment, and had this same unit for five years. Lost everything I owned.

We rented a unit to store our inventory for our clothing business Jan. 11 of last year. On the 22nd of last month, our unit was sold and we did not receive a letter stating that this sell would take place. We contacted their facility on Jan. 20th and were told that we have until the 27th to pay the storage fee. When we called to pay for the unit, we were informed that it was sold. The only letter we received was a notice that our unit was sold a week after we were told over the phone. I would like to sue them for the value of the content in the storage. The total value is $120,000.

Unknowningly, my personal belongings have been auctioned off. Last payment 11/5/13. However, when I spoke with the store clerk to discuss payment arrangments three (3) weeks ago, he made NO mention of the word "auction," and being through this ordeal before, I was aware of the 70-day deadline. When I called 1/23/14, I was informed my unit has been auctioned. Asking why, I was told “the laws have changed.” I am now looking into the certified letter they claimed to have sent.

Auctioned off my storage unit without notifying me. My entire life was in that unit. I have repeatedly requested a copy of the letter they claim they sent me but they have not cooperated.
