Whether you live near agricultural land or an industrial area, you may be equally exposed to water contaminants. It has been reported that illnesses, diseases, and injuries may be a direct result of such contaminant exposure. These can include cancer, learning disabilities, breathing problems, allergies, gastrointestinal problems, heart, liver and kidney problems, and headaches.
How do I know if my water is contaminated?
According to the NRDC, 16% of the US population, approximately 31 million Americans, obtain water from private wells. These wells are not protected by the federal Safe Drinking Water Act so it's up to state and local governments to monitor water safety and quality.Whether or not you suspect contaminated water, it is advised to test your well water frequently. You can visit the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Web site, www.epa.gov for local drinking water information or purchase a home water testing kit. If the contamination can be linked to the negligence of another party, you may qualify for compensation.
